Description:

After two years of hard work, it is now finally time to release the 1.0 version of Crystal SVG

This is probably the biggest update of Crystal, allot of icons have been redesigned, others have been added, special care was given to Koffice and Kopete.

Thanks to:

Connectiva - For financing me in the beginning of this project

Suse - For supporting me and the project in 2003

Lindows - Who has hired me as their staff, and will support Crystal from now on.

LinuxCult - Who thru NullMind hosts my sites and online projects.

And to my Wife .. who has been patient and very forgiving for all the time I spend on the project instead of with her, and to God almihty who makes it all possible.

And last, a special thanks to all the KDE developers who make it the best desktop manager out there !!

Than you for everything

* - Altorught this version is known as "SVG", the icons are still in PNG format, the SVG files will be relased once the support for the format improves in KDE.

I noticed that the there is a cool new addressbook icon but Kmail still uses theold one... (need to add an action icon?)

I like the look of the new sent-mail. When will you change the ugly loking inbox and outbox (they just don't fit with the rest...)

Otherwise great job.

..But what did you do to have that "Gnome-style" selection in the sidebar? It's a possibility for themes under 3.2?

OK., lest anybody should think me a blithering idiot to post twice: response from my ISP took so long that I rewrote it... Well, at least this shows how much I do appreciate!

Have encountered your icons when updating to SuSE 9.0 and found them really stunning. Now I am about to install KDE on my "other" computer running MacOS-X (hope it works) simply for the sake of having the Crystal icon set... it's so much better than Apple's pale blue stuff! Can't anybody talk them into using Crystal too?

Well this Icon set is a big improvenent in looks.

The "X" logo that is there if there's no application icon actually looks good. The CDROM, Floppy, and Zip icons don't look terrible, like in most icon sets. Now I actually prefer KDE icons to Gnome ones. Keep up the good work!

I see just a dot as license, and in the file isn't a readme or something similar.
Isn't it anymore under the (l)gpl?

As these icons are part of the upcoming KDE 3.2, in the cvs module "kdelibs", they are LGPL'd. Everything in kdelibs is LGPL'd, and has to for inclusion (long standing KDE policy)

The iconset is nice on the eye, but is not distributed under any license as far as I can see.

Foood seems to be a major contributer to the iconset - and he/she will not let any modifications of the iconset be distributed. It is explained at his site that he will not let anyone use his icon for free.

I hope we can get a clarification of the license as most of us do not want to have material which break any copyright.

Dude its Everaldo trust him he didnt mess up Foood made them for him to distibute to the kde/linux people for free.

Report

But it seems that Foood did not grant him the right to let others modify the iconset - maybe only distribute it unmodified. So there must be some kind of licensing agreement agreed to by Foood or else all copyright to the icons made by Foood belong to him.

Free as in beer? or free as in speech?

That was my question.

i also am newly registered just to comment on the fantastic work on this site, especially these Crystal icons! Exquisite work! keep it up! i wanted to respond to one posters comment above who mentioned that he didn't care for the two separate colors for the Forward/Back buttons being blue and green.....both alternatives are included in the file, you just have to find and rename them. i did and they work fine, for example i renamed my blue "foward" arrow to "forward" and now the "mismatched" green one is no longer present. you can also replace the former crystal "home" icon as well. anyway, i just wanted to resound the hails of Everaldo's stellar work!

Can someone PLEASE tell me what STYLE AND WINDOW DECORATION this is!?

Fantastic! This icon set is sensational, it's really becoming polished and mature.
I wanted to know 2 things: 1. What window decoration is that, and is it available?
and 2. How is the Konqueror sidebar displayed without those annoying tabs? Can that be done with 3.1 or do I have to wait for 3.2?

I've always been a big fan of the Crystal icon set, and the latest release has exceeded my expectations. Everaldo's work belongs in a museum, and I feel incredibly privelaged to be able to have such elegant and artfully designed icons on my desktop.

With any icon set, there are never quite enough icons to fulfill every need. I have hacked together some of Everaldo's icons to meet some of my needs. I grayscaled, and resized the 'mail' mimetype icon from the previous version of crystal and pasted it on top of a folder icon from the new version to make a mail folder icon. I did similar things to make myself a few other icons I wanted. I dont know if I can distribute them without Everaldo's permission, and even if I could I certainly wouldnt feel right doing so... but I really wish Everaldo would interact a bit more with the community. I realize he is very busy, etc, but I think that his icon set could be more comprehensive if he allowed us to contribute.

If I could get individual components used in some of the icons, I could easily make a wider variety of folder type icons, and things like that. It would be especially nifty if Everaldo would assemble a set of concise visual guidelines so that individuals could make Crystal icons for programs they write. LinuxCult is currently hosting the downloads for Crystal icons, and I think it would be neat if they could set up a little php based system that would enable people to submit contributions automatically, and look through a digital archive (not unlike kde-look). Perhaps kde-look will consider expanding supported functionality for certain media types. Additionally, i'm disappointed that the icons are not really SVG, and i'm wondering why Everaldo has not yet addressed this.

Sorry i'm rambling! ;-) Once again, great work Everaldo!

* I think the "Home" icon is a big step backwards. It doesn't seem to fit in with the look of the other icons. I prefer the one from 0.9.
* The Unmounted CD-RW icon is quite different than the Mounted CD-RW icon, and the CD and DVD icons as well.
* There's no icon for a mobile phone.
* There are no icons for flash media, like USB fobs or flash card readers
* There's no "Mail Folder" icon.

Nice, other than that. I'm not yet sure if I prefer it over Crystal 0.9, but only time will tell.

Hi Everaldo,

Fantastic icon set! However, the index.desktop file states the name as "Crystal SVG beta1". I already had an icon set with this name installed from KDE CVS, and it is *NOT* this icon set, it is 0.9 I believe. Anyway, when I installed the new one, my kconfig showed both names listed, but selecting either one just showed the old icons. I fixed it by modifying your index.desktop file so the name is "Crystal SVG 1.0".

I notice that the selection you made on the folder is highlighted by a rectangle with round corners.

Does thsi mean that part of this bug report: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58944 has been fixed and KDE finally makes selections as GNOME does, with rounded corners?

Is this in 3.2?

i am a former contributer of the crystal icon set and am looking foward to submitting icons to the new svg set. however i do not have any idea, what program(s) are required to make an svg icon. As well, a how-to would be very helpful. Anyone can give me some intel to get started?
