Description:

Plastikfox is a theme for Mozilla Firefox to make it have the same look as the KDE programs with the Plastik style and the Crystal SVG 1.0 icon set.

ABOUT THE OK AND CANCEL BUTTONS: Firefox 1.5 doesn't have OK and Cancel buttons anymore in the Options dialog but it's possible to enable them again. Just write "about:config" in the address bar, search for the key "browser.preferences.instantApply" and set it to false. The OK and Cancel buttons should be there back again.

BUTTON ORDER: You can reverse the button order in the dialog boxes so they are like in the other KDE applications. Simply click "Reverse button order" to install a patch to activate this feature.

COLOR SCHEME: Plastikfox doesn't follow the KDE color scheme. Remember it's just a theme for Firefox, so it's impossible to do it. It's made with the 'Plastik' color scheme. If you want to change the color scheme you'll have to modify the theme manually.

Thanks to Everaldo for his Crystal SVG icon sets. You can get them at:

-------------------------------------
HOW TO INSTALL
-------------------------------------

If you have an older version of the theme, uninstall it before installing a new one.

· Extract the files anywhere you want
· Open the install.html file in Firefox (you don't need to be 'root')
· Click the "Install" button
· Accept when it prompts for the theme installation
· 'Tools' menu - Themes
· Select 'Plastikfox Crystal SVG' and click 'Use this theme'
· Restart Firefox (VERY IMPORTANT!)
· Enjoy!

If you want, you may delete the downloaded files once the theme is installed.

Don't worry, I'll do it as soon as I can. The problem is now I don't have many spare time; I'm all the day at the university and late when I get back home I have no energy to work on anything. :(

To all of you who have asked me to create a port for Thunderbird:

You'll be happy to know I'm actually working on the port and I think I'll release the first beta version the next week or maybe even sooner, depending on what I do this weekend. ;)

It's already usable, but contains a lot of bugs and I want to polish it enough before making it publicly available so people won't have significant problems when installing it for the first time.

I want to thank Yoshimi Tanako, who posted a message in the Mozillux mailing list telling me where to find an XPI to be able to use DOM Inspector on Thunderbird. It's an absolutely needed tool when you create themes, and thanks to it I can now work.

I love it. Does this work for thunderbird too?

As you said, the best release until now! I love it! Now all you need to do is get it on update.mozilla.org so more ppl will use it and you can take advantage of the automatic update ability. :D

Don't worry. The problem is the update is not automatic in update.mozilla.org, so the administrator has to upload it manually and it takes time. But it will be there sooner or later.

Anyway, the theme update in Firefox should work.

Awesome theme! I've used ever since it was first released and can't use Firefox without it.

Since 1.0 PR was just released, I was wondering if your working on a version for 1.0?

Thanks for your hard work, its much appreciated.

Plastikfox 1.5 is ready, but the server seems to be down. As soon as the server is online again, I'll upload it. This new version adds support for Firefox 1.0PR. I've worked hard to remove many bugs and annoyances of previous versions and I've tested every Firefox dialog I'm aware of, so this is probably going to be the best Plastikfox release until now.

If you can't wait for the server to be online again, send me an e-mail and I'll reply to you with the attached .tar.bz2 file.

By the way, as the server is offline, I can't receive e-mails in that address. You may use this alternative address: "anillodance at anillodance dot com"

For some reason on my install (FireFox 0.93 on Linux) the buttons (Back, Forward, Refresh, Stop, Home) are bigger than they are in the screenshots. Is there any way I can make them smaller? Other than that this is a sweet theme that integrates very cleanly with my KDE desktop :)

Well, I figured it out, I can't beleive I was being that stupid. I just had to set Firefox to use small buttons. Everything works and looks perfect now! Awesome theme!

As I mentioned in older comments, it's Tabbrowser extensions who is causing the problems that make the theme incompatible with it. But anyway I had a new idea and yesterday night I started researching how could I use it. The results are Plastikzilla is now close to be compatible with TBE, because in the theme I try to detect TBE to fix the problems TBE causes. This will be applied to Plastikfox too. I still have a problem I don't know how to solve but I've had another idea and I will continue trying to make it work. Anyway these are not the only good news. I also made a modified version of TBE fixing the problem in TBE instead of in Plastikfox and then it all worked perfectly! :) If I can't find a way to fix it in the theme, anyway I will be able to provide modified versions of TBE to allow compatibility with Plastikfox and perhaps improved results in other themes. Just keep an eye on www.polinux.upv.es/mozilla for the news.

Looks great except for one thing.

The tabs seem to be implemented as full 'tabbed folders'. Results in an extra frame drawn around the body of the web page. Since the tab frame covers essentially the entire window, I don't think this adds anything visually (except clutter).

It isn't all that noticeable, so I'm not complaining too loudly. Just looks like a thicker window border. That's not what's really happening, but it's what it looks like.

Do you have the tab bar hidden by default? If the answer is NO, then my answer is it looks exactly the same as in Konqueror with the Plastik style. It might look better or worst but it's the same and that's my purpose. If you have the tab bar hidden by default and you see the upper corners aren't rounded, then it's a bug I'm aware of but I don't know how to solve.

There is a Plastik visual style available for windows. You can download it from www.myjavaserver.com/~mike001/plastik/ .

If you are not familiar with running unsigned visual styles, then you will need to patch your uxtheme.dll to run Plastik on windows. You can find out more about it on the page with the Plastik theme.

when i googled, i found this, but there arent any screen shots. is this just the titlebars, or the full theme. i also found another site, but it looked like just title bars, and not buttons, scrollbars, etc... thx

look at one at deviantart. that has the whole thing. startbar, start menu icon titlebars, buttons scrollbars whatever. however, this only works on windows xp. it is possible to put an msstyle on nonxp boxes, but its buggy and you probably wont like it. if you want, ill tell you how, but it REALLY isnt worth the effort.

I find that the back history menu thing (you know, when you click the down arrow on the back button) is difficult to use.

To emulate konqueror behavior, I should be able to click and hold on any part of the back button, and after a second or two, then the back history menu appears.

The other way to do it is so separate the history menu arrow better away from the back button image (like it is in so many firefox themes).

Right now its difficult to know exactly where to click and how long to hold.

Otherwise, this is a great theme. It makes me feel soo good.

I know the behaviour is not the best it could be, but I don't like a sepparate button for the dropdown menu and I don't know how to implement the behaviour of Konqueror. As soon as I know how, I'll do it, but meanwhile I think this is the most optimal behaviour.

Awesome theme! But how do you install it globally (i.e. for all users) as a root?

I just downloaded one of the new Firefox nightlies (Aviary branch, 20040713), and when I try to use Plastikfox 1.2.1 I get an error when launching Firefox: "Error launching browser window:no XBL binding for browser". Since this is a problem in the nightlies, it probably will be a problem in Firefox 1.0 (or the next milestone). A fix before then would be much appreciated.

Oh, and this is with a fresh profile, and Firefox was installed into an empty directory.

Thanks,
Ben
