(I hope this crap counts as KDE-related...)
A while ago i was playing around with gears in pov. I made a primitive one (quite skinny compared with qwertz's one and also with 12 teeth instead of 8) and looked at it from different perspectives. But since a gear has basically the shape of a circle, and a circle is 2d, i wondered what the related 3d-shape would look like. So i just rotated the gear 90° in the other two dimensions and found it interesting. Now i had an open space in the center of the thing which seemed to me to express the idea of opensource quite nicely. I wanted to emphasize on transparency and added a glass-ball. And i wanted to include some visual analogy for networking, so i added 4 companions to the first thing, which are reflected in the transparency of the others.
It is of course a totally unusable object, (or at least i can't imagine a machine where it would be useful) but as i said: I was just playing around with the gear-concept.
