Description:

This is a kind of program which i think
is missing in kde. You can easyli see which programs you have already installed and which you would like to install.

You can search for programs also in different categorys and so on.
I think that this would make kde and linux much more easyer to handle.

I know there is a similiar program called kpackage but it's really bad. (my opinion) :-)

Thanx guys & girls!

Many people have already asked me if they can download anywhere this app.

This is just an idea of a program which I think is needed.
Maybe i will soon put a description on how the program should work.

Thanks to all who voted for this application because this proofs that something like this is missing.

THANX!!!

First of all, this programm doesn't fit anyway into KDE look'n'feel.
And then I think it's not KDE's task to replace the distribution specific tools like YaST (this looks VERY similiar to YaST), Portage, APT and so on.
If you something like this, use SuSE or if want it in a cleaner way take Debian or Gentoo (There are GUIs for APT or Portage.)

I think of it this way:
Distributions compile packages, and you pick a distribution mostly based on what they offer what they support etc.

a common interface to a package management system is something that Linux lacks. As it is currently it is really difficult to go from 1 distribution to the other.
No one wants to do Tech support like that! "How do you install stuff? well what distribution do you run?.. oh I've never used that one sorry," that doesn't go very far....

I personally would like to see a project in which they provided a library which we could all use to write front-ends in all the different toolkits with a common interface

I agree!!

A common UI is what the GNU/Linux-community lacks. It doesn't say though that the UI have to replace the package-handlers out there. Just having a common UI might lead to widened support for newcomes.

It's all 'bout a Linux-system but with different accents - but it's still a Linux-system.

Why doesn't it fit in to kde look'n feel??

This seems to be very easy to use. If You manage to implement this to be a frontend for all package-handlers like apt, portage/emerge, you-name-it... then this little program might be a killer, IMHO... =)

Keep it up!!

I can't agree more with you. I hope someone implements it, it would be very useful. And it would be very interesting to be able to search for programs by category, and using its name in a human-friendly way instead of something like "program-x11frj-asdf-ghj-3.0.19-4.3.10-30.2mdk.i586.rpm". If you want to install Kopete why can't you just search for "Kopete", click install and have it working?
