Metabar

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements

Description:

This version is a complete rewrite of Metabar and it is now based on khtml. This makes theming quite simple. You just have to edit the default.css file in $KDEDIR/share/apps/metabar/html. But do NOT touch the layout.html file in any case. This might break Metabar. An option for choosing themes (like in amarok) will come in the next version.

When previewing an audio file, how do you stop playback?

Also, when audio preview is in progress, selecting another file crashes konqueror.

If it matters I am using the Rounded Theme, 0.4 - I know it DOES modify layout.html which I recall reading should not be modified..perhaps related?

kde 3.4.1
metabar 0.8

The same behavior. It crashes konqueror by selecting another files during a show of a files is running.

I like the veriosn 0.7

I havent tested so much yet, but still working with no problem in my Gentoo with kde 3.4.1, anyway, I dont use it intensively...

Anyway, I think this is a great piece of software that should be included in kde as soon as it becomes stable.

Thanks ;)

The first step is already done. Metabar bar is in the KDE SVN repository. BUt it is no part of kdeaddons (that's where it will be when added to kde) yet.
You can get the sourcecode for SVN if you want to:

Hi, since the actual version doesn't work for me (as I wrote before enabling it crashes the respective Konqueror window...) and the only older version available for me is 0.6, I'd like to have version 0.7 again, which I actually liked very much...

So is there someone around still having the 0.7 version source code handy??

regards

go to the sourceforge page and you can download any version you like. Btw I was about to upgrade, what exactly is wrong with 0.8?

Report

Thanks for the hint... looked already at sourceforge.net but, oversaw the possibility to get other versions

My complain with version 0.8 is that it freezes the konqueror window I'm using it in. After enabling metabar, the respective window takes all CPU time it gets and keeps an doing nothing...

So I stay with version 0.7 :)

Do you have many bookmarks? With many subfolders and entries?

Report

15 years ago

What exactly do you mean by "many"?? I think I got at least some bookmarks in the bookmarks-bar of Konqueror (Maybe round about 50-100). But you are right I use to manage them with subfolders...

Any ideas?

cheers

P.S.: I managed to get version 0.7 running again ;) So right now I'm pretty happy about this

Metabar loads all bookmarks at startup (even subfolders). This seems to take all the CPU and makes konqueror hang. I will fix this as soon as I find a good solution...

Report

goldenboy

Why exactly does it do that?? I haven't seen any bookmark in the metabar plugin...

Personally I would think bookmarks are not important for this sidebarplugin, since there is already the default one...

I have installed metabar but I cannot find a way to make it appear...
I'm running suse9.2 kde3.4.1 but same problem occurred when running kde3.3.
In the sidebar i find a "add metabar" button, but in effect nothing happens.
Is it a Suse bug or it's just me?
Thanks

Me too! I'm running Gentoo but I compiled and installed metabar 0.8 without emerge.

Konqueror says:
konqueror: WARNING: libname:0x8418560 doesn't specify a library!

metabar in Gentoo is under kde-misc, if you want to use emerge to install it just use this ebuild:

=== Cut from here ===
# Copyright 1999-2005 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/kde-misc/metabar/metabar-0.7.ebuild,v 1.5 2005/05/12 22:20:50 greg_g Exp $

inherit kde

DESCRIPTION="A sidebar plugin for konqueror."

SRC_URI="mirror://sourceforge/metabar/${P}.tar.gz"

SLOT="0"
KEYWORDS="~x86 ~amd64 ~sparc"
IUSE=""

DEPEND="|| ( kde-base/konqueror >=kde-base/kdebase-3.4 )"

need-kde 3.4

S="${WORKDIR}/${PN}"

#pkg_setup() {
# if ! use arts; then
# eerror "${PN} needs USE=\"arts\" (and kdelibs compiled with USE=\"arts\")"
# die

pkg_postinst()
{
echo
einfo "To use Metabar, run Konqueror, right-click the sidebar,"
einfo "and choose 'Add New -> Metabar'."
echo
}
=== End of ebuild ===

The ebuild must be named metabar-0.8.ebuild and placed under kde-misc/metabar. Preferably under your overlay dir, so it will not be deleted next time you resync portage.

Then you need to change into the metabar dir and do "ebuild metabar-0.8.ebuild digest", and then you can emerge it.

The ebuild is modified from the original for 0.7, just commented out the arts section to work around an error, since arts is not needed anymore (good for that ;) ). So thanks goes to the original author, I dont know anything about ebuild ;)

Thank You! Emerging worked great. Unfortunately it crashes very often. I will keep testing it.

Try a ./configure --prefix=/usr/kde/3.4 (or what your kde version is). My dev system is gentoo too and it's working here

Could be a SuSE bug
It's running fine on my SuSE 9.3 with kde 3.4 (SuSE default)

I have now made my own package and installed but how do I enable the metabar?

You can find my package (debian testing/unstable) at http://peppesbodega.nu/turban/index.php?section=images&path=Debian%20Packages/KDE/Apps

Ah, found it=)

But when I add it and try to use it Konqueror sucks up all my CPU and freezes.

Report

Same for me... :(

Compiling wokrs fine, but when enabling it, or starting a konqueror profile with enabled metabar, this window freezes and takes 99% CPU-Time.

I'm running Kubuntu hoary with KDE 3.4.1...

cheers

Can you supply a style sheet that provides the same look as metabar version 0.7?

I like that look and it fit well.

Would be nice to be able to specify what program to use for previews.

Although I use KDE, I don't use arts.

I for myself think not I can do such a style sheet as I'm not so good in CSS. The current style was done by a friend of mine who is much better in doing this. But maybe someone elso on kde-look.org can make some?

Metabar uses for the preview your preferred player part. So if you chose let's say kmplayer as your favourite part for mpgs Metabar will use it. You can change it in Konqueror's file options I think.
