Description:

Katapult is an application for KDE, written in C++, designed to allow faster access to applications, bookmarks, and other items. It is plugin-based, so it can launch anything that is has a plugin for. Its display is driven by plugins as well, so its appearance is completely customizable. It was inspired by Quicksilver for OS X.

Use alt+space and start typing - you'll be presented with an option to launch something depending on what you've typed.

For example, hit alt+space then type "a" "m" (hit the two keys - no spaces or quotes) and this should offer to launch amarok - hit enter to launch

If you have no notification-area icon - then hit alt+space then ctrl+c to bring up the case-sensitive menu to allow you to configure katapult

I don't see anything, when I use alt+space.
only a lt-katapult thread is in "top" fort a few seconds.
"Configure Katapult" crashes the program.
Could you please post a screenshot what it should look like?
btw: compiled --without-arts - is this a problem (concerning KNotify or similiar)?

thx

If someone were willing to package this up to get it on portage - or point me in the direction to get this going - I'd be grateful

Great Work!

some improofments for the amarok plugin would be nice e.g to search for albuns instead of songs

Thanks for this great application, I really love it. What would be great is to support kaddressbook contacts and kopete contacts. When you type the name of a contact his picture appears and you can send him an email or a IM message.

An improvement I can think of is taskbar usage - so if the application is already launched, perhaps you can change the action to "Switch To" by pressing the arrow key or maybe a control key.

Please, don't strike me, I already compiled and installed, it looks great but really I don't understand how should I use it, could you explain me?

It should work on any release 3.4.x and above I believe - I've not tested it on anything else - please do let me know if you find other versions it works with

i've been wayting for something like this for a long time.
i think that what urges the most in this app is an extensor, meaning... when u have more than one match for a certain expression, the rest of the results should appear on a dropdown list... like in quicksilver. other than this its beautiful... and super useful. i think i finnaly found a replacement for alt+f2...
this one alongside with yakuake have been the two greatest additions to kde usability i've seen in the past months

Thats the first thing we're coding into the next release - It's a choice between making the display more cluttered - or making the "how to select other stuff" confusing (as in we'll have lots of people asking s how to do it)

What feels most natural to you people to select the next thing in the list.

and Thank you - you have no idea how much putting us in the same category as yakuake means to me ;)

oh, i forgot! i think the most natural way to select the next thing would be the tradicional tab (shift-tab for backward's operation). hum... another thing, how do u expect to handle multiple operations for the same match? (meaning: when a match has more than one option to execute).

when are u planning the next release? from version 2.0 to 3.1 was more than a year :D

thanks in advance

well, the most natural to me would be:
1- first the most called apps would be listed first,
2- the most called folders/locations would be listed next.

-don't know te best way to keep a register/counter for the apps, but a simple database/hashmap would do the trick.

-another usefull thing would be extend the options for stuff like amarok plugin. i would like (example) to call the name of an album and append it all to the playlist. currently it's only possible to add tracks

- another interesting plugin would be a kat plugin. having access to indexed files by kat would improve tremendously the usability of katapult (an indexation deamon by kat developers would help).

i think this is the most important things (at least that i can forsee).

oh, and don't thank me. let us all thank u instead! cheers!

This is truly one of the best apps outside KDE i've seen.
I have just one question: Is there any documentation. At least apidoc?
First suggestion I have is that katapult does not recognize all programs in my PATH. I would make plugin for this myself, but I need some info on writing it.

Anyway, thanks for the great app and good luck with the future development! :-)

at the moment - no - but if you want to contribute and try and help - we'd love it.

It actually works from programs in your menu - not in your path ;) so - well - it shouldnt be that hard.

Feel free to email me on mez@ubuntu.com or come into the #katapult channel on freenode, and we'll try and help you help us ;

Why not make it so that if it doesnt find the proram in the kmenu, it will just launch whatever you typed in, like the way alt+f2 does.

More importantly, im running dapper and it took me a LONG time to figure out how to use it. It is a great app, but it is not very obvious. Im not sure how to fix this though without an annoying popup window.

yes - if you dont know it's there - it well - doesnt show itself.

This is because it's set to run as defauly in dapper - it runs as part of the session restoring - but we didnt want people to be bugged by the notification each time - so we had to like - make it so it didnt pop up on a session restore.

But - with hope documentation will ensue in the near future :D
