Description:

I was fooling around in Blender and Yafray and suddenly came up with this idea for another Gentoo Linux wallpaper. It was also meant as a test to see if I could replicate the photorealism from Yafray with using only Blender Internal.
As it turns out, for this particular scene, the biggest difference between yafray and blender apart from memory usage and rendertimes is color bleeding. The self illuminated parts glow onto the floor, thanks to radiosity and bounced lighting.
Still, I prefer the blender render, since you can get the shadows smoother in a shorter render time.

This was originally rendered as a dual desktop image at a resolution of 3200x1200, the render time was about 4 hours, using only one Area light set to 16x. No AO was used and OSA was set to 16.
Last changelog:

Added a plain Widescreen version without the Gentoo "G". Resolution is 1920x1200.

Blend file available now.

Link is working again.

This looks great, but unfortunately your website is dead/down, and the wallpapers can no longer be found, including on archive.org's historical archive. I even googled for the wallpaper filenames, and they don't appear anywhere.

Someone should delete this entry, because its not accessible any longer.

Thats odd. When I click on the links it works.

My site is currently offline as in, the actual webpage is not up but instead a joomla framework, but the images are still hosted there and should be available.

Maybe you were unlucky and tried to access them while my Provider had a power outtage.

Please post here if the images are still unavailable.

Hi guys, some of the links to the wallpapers point to my website.
My bank account was kinda low when the provider tried to deduct their fees for hosting, so the site was offline for a while and therefore some of the links didnt work.

Anyways, everything is back to normal again. :-)

Excellent work! I bet that took a few minutes to produce. I'm a gentoo user and it looks fine. I think it would be hard to improve upon what you have, but I think a nice alternative would be to make the three balls a little smaller and give the wallpaper a little more surrounding space. Since I'm a "blue" guy, even a little bluish tint to the background might look really nice.

But all in all, this is superb work. Nice job man.

Whats the highest widescreen resolution?
I figure, if Im gonna re-render it, I might as well make it big enough so that all widescreen folks can scale it down to fit.

Hi, I'd really like to see a widescreen (1280x800) version of your wonderful wallpaper (w/o gentoo logo). Thank you very much!

Ok, I've added a link to the plain Widescreen version.
Its 3200x1200, I think that should be big enough.

I added a link to the plain vanilla version of the wallpaper, without the Gentoo branding.

I was just wondering, since this is a nice wallpaper...
You said it took 4h, on what hardware?
Could be fun to know, kind of ;)
And why am I thinking of a fameous mouse when I see this wallpaper? :D
