Description:

After a few solid months of work, Tango Generator 3 is out. While it still lacks support for additional applications, it's a vast upgrade in terms of usability, reliability, expandability and icon coverage. And, as planned, it's out in time for Christmas (just)!

This release includes the following major changes:
Nearly 10 more icon themes - pushing the total up to 24.
Hundreds more icons drawn specifically for the generator.
Updated and expanded icon themes.
Improved usability - for example, themes can now be ordered via drag and drop, and ordering won't be broken due to accidential sorting.
Support for Gnome 2.20.
Support for distribution branding.
Detection of required binaries.
An entirely rewritten core: faster, more stable, more reliable and more efficient.
A far more extensible structure - expect to see more rapid updates and more complete application coverage.
Support for the saving, loading and distributing of theme configurations.

Note: To make use of updated packages, run 'rm -rf ~/.tango-generator/archives/*.tar*' before first run.

Please enjoy the app and, if you have time, have a look around the site. If you'd like to give something back, check out the 'Easy Contributions' link below.

I'm looking into it. I'm wary about porting it to KDE 3, since the icon format is entirely different from KDE 4 and will probably take more effort. There's also the fact that either approach will require an alternate GUI to be reasonably effective. If you can find any indication of interest in it (I'm not sure where the best place to put a pole would be) I could certainly work on it.

Mmm...it's too soon to think at KDE4 porting, I guess.

Major KDE distro (Kubuntu, PCLinuxOS...) will release the next version with KDE 3.5.x too. And KDE4 is still an unstable release...you have to think well about, if you wanna do it. Maybe we can try to contact a 'Tango Project Icon' member, and ask him an advice about it. If you are agree, I'll see to it soon.

What do you think about?
P.S. Thanks to agree to my proposal, and excuse me for my really bad english.

Hi, I want my desktop to be exactly like the 'Darkness' you have on your website.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 32-bit

After downloaded and installed the deb package for tango generator, I also got the configuration files. The problem is..what do I do next? I mean, after downloaded the config files I extracted darkness.tgc to my desktop, execute it, wait Tango Generator to generate the files and then nothing happens.

After the step mentioned above is finished, TG says 'you have successfully generated and installed your custom theme'. Where is the generated script/XML file located? I took a look at 'theme' tab on desktop properties, but there is nothing available there.

Is there anything missing? What should I do?

You need to select a theme, click the customise button and then select the icon theme.

I have successfully created the Icons using the Darkness configuration file. But to what theme should I apply the icons? What color theme is that?

Very promision project. But if i may suggest, don't modify every icon to Tango, for exmaple Deluge has beutiful Tango icon, but after patching is ugly. So would thankfull for selective patching or so...

I've had numerous people say they prefer that patched icon, and ultimately I believe it's a matter of taste. It shouldn't be difficult to remove that icon from any sets if it bothers you, or you can modify the themes.xml file.

What distribution are you using? Sounds very like it uses a python version other than 2.5 or 2.4, or you've installed the wrong package.

Deactivating collected application icons and discovery... it works... neither it doesn't work...
Discovery --- probably because link to tar.gz to download doesn't ping
Collected Application icons... i don't know

Report

Collected Application icons also contains a link to an icon that was on the same server as discovery (gnucash.png) and that's why that wont work.

I tried this evening and collected application icons worked... Infact now i have my icons set (without discovery)... but discovery continues to be offline...

The tango generator seems to not be working anymore on my Ubuntu 7.10 desktop. It never seems to reach the downloading of the icons.

'Edit': I've just checked out a copy and it seems there are significant modifications - I'll add them in the next release.

You should get pretty much the same icons with "Old Tango", which includes a few more icons that were originally part of mainstream Tango. I may include that as an additional option, but don't want to extend the list much more.

Good job, I like this. Are you planning to include gTango in your Generator??. I think it has some icons your generator could use and as I know author is following Tango Guidelines now.

Unfortunately, despite stating his intentions the author isn't, in fact, following the guidelines which specify the provision of sizes, which results in a very messy look and lower resolutions IMO and makes the theme incompatible with the generator. It also violates the licenses of many icons (including a fair few I drew myself) by packaging CC Attribution Share Alike and GPL icons together despite the fact that the two licenses conflict. Not to mention a lack of attribution for any of the CC Attribution icons used.

I posted quite a lengthy comment about this in the comments to the icon theme which the author promptly ignored, and have no intention to go to great lengths to incorporate the theme.
