the size option is not so important. it is used to estimate the length of the audio file in order to display a nicer progress bar. it's the file size per second.

Thank you very much. I find it amusing how my Mac OS X friends think that AIFF is THE standard uncompressed format for ripped CDs.

Doesn't EVERYBODY just run iTunes anyway? :)

Hi there,

I got the latest version 0.3.6 but it wouldn't let me add *.mpc files even tho i installed the musepack decoder and it's properly been recognized by sound converter. I can see it in the plugins list. Is this a known bug? Will you provide a fix or should i check myself?
Thanks,
Ron

hi, this could be a mime type problem. could you please tell me what's the mime type of the mpc files your kde recognizes. try right click on the file -> properties -> click the type button -> mime type is shown in the window title.

Report

James, by clicking on the 'Type' button a dialog box with the title '"Edit File Type audio/x-musepack - KEditFileType". I'm not sure if this is the box you're looking for. It gives info like "Filename Patterns", "Description" or "Application Prefernce order". If you're looking for the application preference order soundKonverter is not in there, i only have EasyTAG, Amarok and Kaffeine. I added soundKonverter to this list but there's no change, it still wouldn't recognize *mpc files.

Thanks for your help!

Quality doesn't correspond to quality value of the command-line encoder :
quality 70 is 6.7
quality 72 is 6.92
quality 73 is 7.03

it should be 7, 7.2 and 7.3...

Report

C

HessiJames

hi, that's intentional. the quality value is meant to be independent from the codec/backend. to see the real quality look at the tooltip.

Report

rom1v

The quality value can be independant of the codec, but can be "correctly" mapped to the codec parameters.

What is your conversion fonction from quality value to codec value? Why not use f(x)=x/10?

Report

C

HessiJames

the conversion is linear. oggenc has a quality range from -1 to 10, lame from 9 to 0, and so on. have a look at the plugins for more details.

I have a couple of feature request which I think would improve this already fantastic app:

1. Option to skip existing files

I operate two libraries; 1 in FLAC for high-quality listening and as a reference source, and an MP3 copy for fast transfer to portable devices. I use soundkonverter to create this copy. Every now and then I get some new music and it would be nice to be able to point soundkonverter at the source folder and only create copies of the files which don't exist. This is kinda like a library "sync".

2. Option to transfer external "folder.jpg" album art

As my main library is in flac, most of my album art is held as a "folder.jpg" file within each album's directory (flac only recently supports embedded art, and tagging software has yet to catch up). It would be great it this could be used during the process either to copy the file directly, or to use this to tag the resulting file.

hi, i implemented an option to skip existing files and the ability to execute a script after every converted file. at the moment i have not much time, if you are skilled at writing bash scripts, feel free to write a copy cover script. the script is launched with the source and destination file as parameters.
i'll need some time to implement this since i'm not very skilled at writing bash scripts.

The fedora f8 srpms at
/repositories/home:/HessiJames/Fedora_8/src
don't build.

After fixing this:

configure: error: expected an absolute directory name for --prefix: %{prefix}

BTW, that's just wrong. Use %{configure}.

I'm stumped by this:

hi, what happens if you run "WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5="1" WANT_AUTOMAKE_1_6="1" gmake -f Makefile.cvs" first?

And yeah, sorry mp4v2 support is currently not available.

Hello,
first thanks for the excellent tool. what i'm still missing is a cddb-plugin, so i don't have to type in all data by myself. freedb or another dadtabase would be ok.
or does this exist anywhere (google doesn't give results)
thanks!

hi,
currently soundkonverter queries freedb.org for a cddb match. querying a cddb manually isn't supported (yet) - i have only little time at the moment. but i can recommend easytag.

I installed the most recent version, tried to convert an ogg file into an mp3 but don't get the mp3 playing on any of the players... not sure what's wrong there... the file i tried to convert had a decent size of 2.9MB as well but not sure how to trouble shoot this. Help is appreciated!

hi,

could you please go to the directory: ~/.kde/share/apps/soundkonverter/logs, remove all files, start soundkonverter, try to convert your files and send me all files in the log directory (before closing soundkonverter) to hessijames at gmail dot com.

you could also send me the defect file, maybe it is useful.

so the conversion gives no error. if you want try to decode the ogg file with soundkonverter to wav. and hear the result. then encode it via the command line with lame. at first without parameters then with the parameters in the log file.
at the moment i have to assume that the problem lies in lame or the audio players. (maybe a combination of that and the chosen parameters.)
so try to convert the file with other output options.
