[I do not know why so many people are complaining about the new tabbed layout. The playlist can be seperated from the main window, the only thing that possibly lacks is a more feature rich right click menu within the playlist ... and if it would be possible to make the tabs a little smaller (more flat), so that they consume less space it'll get really slick!]

For me it's not so much the tabbed layout that is the problem.
It's that 0.4.x had a much better interface then 0.5+, since it had a smaller GUI, spacebar throttled play and pause, middle mouse buttom throttled fullscreen. All controls I need when I'm playing video, were right-where for easy access in the main windows (select subtitle, langauge, volume control etc.).

Kaffeine is IMO still a good videoplayer for linux, but it was a great videoplayer before.

i dont know either...
kaffeine is great and in my humble opinion, kaffeine is the only fully working media player... I use it all the time, even for MP3, and I never have any problem....

can't say the same thing about juk/amarok/noatun which cause me so much pain for near zero result.

for the tab interface, I like it, but its true that it use slightly too much space... If I could place the tabs on the same bar as the toolbar, that would be perfect. or even all three (Tabs, Toolbar, Menubar) on the same line.

thanks.

I really like kaffeine (use it every day) and I think it's a stellar app.

I've never really liked the cofeebean logo all that much... now I see a newer logo that is a realistic coffee bean. The texture of hte bean makes it look like like... a waste product of sorts (no offense).

I made this logo, and I am going to apply it as my kaffeine default movie (that shows up after playing the movies)

enjoy if if you like, ignore it if you don't

Altough this is way better then 0.5 (less broken anyway); 0.4.3b is much faster and has a better interface with awesome functionality.

0.4.3b is in fact the only decent media player for KDE.

You know, I love Kaffeine, it is my default player, and I missed it soooo much. Please support KDE 3.4.

And I'm ANGRY with you because you have delayed Kaffeine release for too many days!!!

Thank you Very Much for this Release :)

play/pause - done
seeking
making the playlist either a dockable sidebar or allowing users to have it _never_ become a tab

1/3 done your getting there! kaffeine is almost usable again.

I have been using kaffeine for quite a while and though overall I like the new version, here are some of things I find lacking:

* I agree that a tab widget for a playlist is a bad idea. Yes, you can undock it, but I think a method like sidebars in konq/amorok or how juk does the tag editor would be a much better idea. It's a bad idea to not be able to see the video playing if you want to modify the playlist. All functionality of the player should compliment the viewing of media, instead of obstruct it.

* I like that I can play videos in fast or slow motion in the new version. However, why is this limited to only 1x and 2x? It would be nice to have even faster modes, perhaps increasing by a power of 2 each time: 2, 4, 8. Also, I feel that calling them 1x and 2x fast forward is very confusing. 1x to me means its playing at normal speed.

* Has the ability to skip by n seconds been removed? This was really useful. Could you please add the ability to skip ahead or backwards by a configurable amount of time?

* Seems that reverse/rewind has been totally removed. You can now fast forward, and go in slow motion, but you cannot skip backwards? As I'm writing this it seems I discovered that you can skip using the mouse wheel. But it would still be nice to have it as a possible keyboard shortcut, and have the amount of skip time be configurable.

BTW, If I am incorrect in some of the above, I would love to be corrected.

thanks for the great program.

Also forgot to mention one more thing. In previous version it was possible to pause/play using the space bar. Now that functionality has been separated into two keyboard shortcuts, so I cannot use the same key to pause and then resume playing. I realize this is probably highly subjective, but I preferred the old way better (and it seems to be more common among other players too).

Hi, I love Kaffeine, but the TABS are not good looking. A SideBar button (as in 'File Open Dialog') would look better with kaffeine.

I wish to report bug with kaffeine 0.5 when opening real media files at www.dishant.com. Previous kaffeine 0.4b would work just fine with kde 3.2. but kaffeine 0.5 with kde 3.3.2 simply crashes when playing streaming real media files. please have a look in this issue, as there is no good embeddedable media player for real media. thank you.

for my harsh comment, above - I don't like to have to pin the version for kaffeine in apt-get. in some time, kaffeine 0.4.3 has to be removed I'm afraid, so I have to stop using that player, unless the player has been made usefull (for me) again. that sucks, imho, sorry.

I loved kaffeine 0.4.3 - clean, just does what it has to - I double-click a video, it starts playing it. thats it. it has full-screen, subtitle support, back/forward/pause etc, its fast, easy to use, looks nice - but now it has become a 'media player'. whatever that is. Mediaplayers suck. all of them. never saw one that doesn't, actually. of course, windows media player sucks the most, but others do so, too.

damn, why does every player want to do so much? do what you can do best - kaffeine can play video, juk and amarok can play music.

sorry, still frustrated...

I don't know if ure a troll or just totally ignorant but kaffeine has been a media player way before 0.43. If u think mediaplayer suck then 0.43 sucks and u love it as u said :). Just because there've never been any good mediaplayer doesn't mean its impossible to make a good one, only that the previous ones were badly designed and this is why I'm happy with kaffeine, because it's the only player out there that can do both and successfully at least for some people like me.

by the way if u're looking for a good video player only try this http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=17161

the Codeine developper promessed to keep it simple and not add new features after 1.0. he's also an amarok dev.

The ability to play music files is in 0.4 too. Kaffeine can play any media file that Xine can. If by bloat you mean all the menu items, they're easily editable (~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/kaffeineui.rc).

Kaffein 0.5 isn't a huge step over 0.43. There are lots of improvements, with one moderate usability issue. Having the extra bar for the playlist is annoying, but not a major problem.

I think you should try Kaffeine 0.5. Run the program, and move all the toolbars into one line. Hide the statusbar (if it's shown), remove the go tab and undock the playlist window. It looks much the same as Kaffeine 0.43.
