Hmmm... no, I never used that, I use the mouse scroll. Maybe ask the developer to add it back in :)

It's a great improvement over the release candidates. But I have to admit, I prefer the 0.4 layout. I don't actually prefer 0.4, 0.5 is still better in other areas.

A few suggestions:
1. Could you please, please bring back minimal mode. I loved that about kaffeine 0.4

2. Could you add an option to let the playlist stay undocked, and not bring up a tab when closed. Basically, like the old Kaffeine. Then maybe add a playlist toolbar button and/or menu item. (this, along with the ability to remove the go tab that you already added, would satisfy anyone that said they didn't like the new Kaffeine)

3. Could you also bring back the pause/play dcop call. I have a pause play button on my keyboard so it works better.

Thanks, great work!

kaffine-0.4.3 is the best media player I had ever seen.

but not kaffeine-0.5. up to now, I still use kaffine-0.4.3 and will never update to kaffeine-0.5.

I can not understand: what is the benefit of "Tab Widget"? why the toolbar must be dragable.why it must be KDEed.

kaffeine had lost its direction.
0.4.3: stable, clean, simple, easy to use.
0.5 : stable?, not clean, complex, hard to use.

Why Tabs are NOT good
say your watching a video and you want to move things around in your play list.
Oops.. you have miss something just so you can adjust something, like delete/add/move..
what's the purpose of that page that displays everything that kaffeine can do? you wanna know what it does.. look at the menu's.

an approach that I'd think would Improve kaffeine would be to loose the tabs get back the seperate window playlist. and if you want to add something to display what kaffeine can do put buttons or something along the side.
Or if you want to keep it all 1 window do a konq. side bar thing with the playlist and "what kaffeine can do" stuff. Just please.. no more tabs...

Tabs are only useful if you do NOT want or need to see something. IMO a video should never have to be hidden to do something as common as a playlist modification.

It is of course up to the author how you wish to implement things. But I as well will never upgrade past 0.4.3 and have been trying to find another player.

why it must be KDEed.

Cause it's a kde application.
Why not try?
I hope it will become the default KDE media player in the future.

I don't plan on ever upgrading from 0.4.3. The new layout simply does not look good.

I regret saying this, as the new version adds some useful features, but the new layout is disagreeable enough to me that the new features aren't worth it.

what is the benefit of "Tab Widget" in konqueror and firefox?
==>not having to handle two or three windows(playlist,visualisation...) for the same application. It's faster and easier.

Don-t get offended but you have a really personal idea of what UI elements are meant for.
Tabs are meant for separate pages (i.e. different web pages that are obviously not related) or not too deep configuration (if the config page has lots of options, tabs become a pure hell).

But ABSOLUTELY they are not meant for related pages in a program like Kaffeine! And as you can see in the comment, I'm not alone thinking this...anyway if you don't trust me, try to ask opinion on kde-usability ML.

Moreover, also toolbars are used very badly. There are tons of toolbar by default, placed in a quite strange way and with button that are everythig but explicative.

In the end...I don't know if you are a developer or simply someone who love Kaffeine 0.5. In the first case, don't take this critics as personale offenses, we (me, at least) are only trying to give our help, opinions and ideas to improve Kaffeine, that tecnically is already a very good player. But, as I said, in 0.5 version it's UI has got serious usability prolems.

I don't get offended I just thought that calling it shit was a bit over the top.

you're saying that tabs are not meant for related pages but are visualization and the playlist very related? if you think so you can still undock the playlist so you can finally see both at the same time if you can't live without it :)

I agree with the toolbar issue but you can move them around as you wish to make it look like 0.43.

I'm not a developper I'm just a kaffeine lover and I think critics are a very good thing as long as they're not rude unfunded insults as this other guy did, yours is a civilized critic.

by the way in xine-ui configuration pages are separed in different tabs because they are so numerous that putting them all on the same page would give the user a headache.

Can you quote me where I call it "shit"?

So..don't you really think that the playlist (what you are going to play) and the visualization (what you ARE playing) are not related?? Are you so sure?

And about toolbars: wrong default are exactly what I mean for "usability nightmares". Possibility to personilize easily is good (that's why I love KDE and not Gnome), but the defaults have to be sane for the vast majority of people, this majority that would never touch any setup cause they simply wants to play videos, not to play with the video program. The others (like me, and you, I suppose) could easily add toolbars and change the behaviour at their taste.

I didn't say u call it shit, I was talking about Superstoned post. Note that my first post was a reply to Superstoned's post where he did call it shit. I had no problem with your post sorry for not being clear enough :).

About the visualization, you only need one click to see it or just roll over the tab to see it. With amarok you need to right click then select visualization then select which one you want. And if you want to see both at the same time with kaffeine you can still undock the playlist which is overall 2 clicks away, less than amarok :)

yet I agree that the default toolbar are not very good but hey it's not the end of the world.

Ok, I've tryed 0.5 and it's really lot better than rc2 due to bug squeezing..BUT the defaults are still insane IMO

1) the toolbars
2) that "shortcut page" again in a tab, it's something that I really don't understand. If you remove it, remove some toolbars and redesign others and don't fix your mind on the playlist :P it becomes quite usable and handy (I really do love the central mouse button behaviour when fullscreen! and thanks that the fullscreen shortcut key bug has been fixed! Now I can use again my usual F key)

they are different apps and different usage.

tabs in konqueror and firefox is needed, without this, we had to start more than one browsers at the same time to browse different websites. and that is also a performance problem.

but this is not happend to kaffeine.

Apart from nasty bugs that probably were corrected from rc2 (like the horrid "always place on top of playlist" for movies opened with Konqui), I think that if there weren't changes to the UI from the rc2, Kaffeine 0.5 serie is going to be a true usability nightmare :( And I'm very sad with this, cause I always found Kaffeine to be the best and most integrated player for KDE.

But, for god sake, why did you choose this tab approach? If you want to use a multi page approach, why don't choose a lateral toolbar a la Konqi config page, or a sidebar a la Konqi/amaroK?
Really, I don't want to offend your work nor you, but tabs suck for such a kind of program

I fully agree. Kaffeine was a nice Video player, up to 0.4.3 - and now its over. it sux. its good for nothing - not video's (I have to keep this version or start using Kmplayer) and certainly not music (amarok and juk both beat this hands-down, and, of course - its silly to add mp3playing capabillities to a videoplayer, like it sucks adding video-playing to a music player - keep your own bussiness. why cd-burners that can play video's; texteditors that can burn documents; email-programs that can play music; etc etc etc etc).

you know, there is a word for this: BLOAT. I'd say pure shit.

sorry, but I'm frustrated to see this cool player burned to the ground. I quit using kmplayer, it was too buggy. discovered this great Kaffeine. and now - the horror...

come on get a life, I'm sorry but calling kaffeine shit really sucks man. Kaffeine is my favorite multimedia player and I love the tab system, it's much faster to roll over tabs then clicking on kicker to see the playlist.

And the ability to play both music and video is the reason why I use Kaffeine. I hate starting a new program just to see a 30 seconds video specially on a slow computer kaffeine is really time saving. And Kaffeine handles ogg and mp3 perfectly.

Plus kaffeine has neat features such as streaming and its playlist is pretty cool to me and very fast. It handles my 9000 mp3,oggs,dvs shared on samba partition as fast as amarok.

PS: we don't care you're not using it anymore, this is free software and ts author is not going to lose money on your tragic move :)

PPS:kaffeine is to mediaplayers what konqueror is to browsers, it can do it all and it does it well. if you think kaffeine is bloated because it can handle more than two different tasks then don't use konqueror!

Its a disappointing release it was my favourite media player up until 4.3b
but now the whole player has changed and i can't seem to find the aspect ration settings when playing a dvd

also i use Gentoo and i compiled glibc with nptl and this seems to disrupt kaffeine as it won't start at all
my solution was to download the suse binary

either way i don't like this release very much :(

Argh. What have you done to Kaffeine? It's unuseanble at the moment. Every time I click on a movie inside a website it open kaffeine and plays correctly. Then I close Kaffeine. Next time I click on another video in an website, kaffeine opens but plays the old video first. I have to click on the playlist, choose the new video and the get back to the videotab and start the video. This also happens if I delete the old video from the playlist or even delete the whole playlist before closing it.

And then, how do I jump a few second forward or backward with keyboard? I used to be left- and rightarrow, but this doen't work anymore. I haven't found a place to configure this.

What the hell was wrong with the old kaffeine interface. At least it was usable....

I'm very disappointed. I think I have to use mplayer again...

While playlist is nice addition (for e.g. multipart avi's), I think video clips should not be added to playlist by default when viewing them. For example I download clip, watch it and remove it from disk it's currently automatically added to playlist. Next time when I watch different video and it ends the already removed clip is still on the list and I get error message telling me it could not be found when Kaffeine tried to play next clip in playlist.

Would be better in my opinion if user could add clips to playlist if he wishes to do so but they would not be added automatically.

Other than that, rc2 is great :)

im trying a second change to the new version ;).
Two things, how can i disable playlist?
and how i can configure left and right cursors like in 0.4.3 by default?

regards.
