HELP Needed:

Currently I'm working on a completly rewrite of kbootsplash. This will take quite some time.

But I hope kbootsplash will be much better than.

Every Distribution has now it's own class! So I need developers who are willing to help me support their Distribution.

openSuSE is developed by myself but there are so many other distributions out there.

If someone wants to support me, then please contact me!

I am trying to compile kbootsplash in a derived system Debian and am finding difficulties. Exists some restriction? The project foresees some update in this direction? Thank

Really love you app ....
A must if just like me you can't figure out how to install themes.
I'd be very grateful if you add support for higher resolutions such as 1600x1200 ... my 21" monitor's begging for it !

anyway, keep up the good work.

Your kbootsplash looks cool and I'm sure lots of Debian users would be grateful to you if you'd make a version compatible with Debian. Will you please do that? I know I'd be eternally grateful. :)

I agree with cblue - debian is a REALLY popular distro, especially as many popular distros are based on debian.

Please, Please, PLEASE consider adding debian as the next supported distro!

Thanks,
Danny

I will support Debian of curse but it will take some time.

Perhaps I will release kbootsplash 0.3.5 befor kbootsplash 0.4 which will include debian support.

But I need some people for testing!

Also I need someone who can explain how to change the bootsplash under debian because I don't know debian and did not have tested it anyway.

My system resolution is 1600x1200 but that's not mentioned in the list of resolutions. Does that matter? Can I use kbootsplash without that it changes my resolution or garbles the screen?

I'm working on it.

Version 0.3 should have Fedora support, but as I was programming this feature I couldn't figure out how to change the bootsplash under Fedora.

By now I don't know how to change the bootsplash under Fedora. So I have to learn the functionality of changing the bootsplash under this system.

But I can promise that the fedora support is in work.

Please be patient.

Hello,

This program is very good !

But it's quite a paint to create and edit bootsplash.
It's would be good to have a quck editor to place items on the splashscreen : basically text, messages and the bar.
We could have the image displayed and just click and drag to place a box, eventually with QLineEdits to have per pixels/characters settings.
And then compress it to a file.

Mandrake, in 9.1, was having this sort of tool.
But it isn't provided and it was just by adjusting per pixels/characters, so not very user-friendly.

What about this idea ?

This is planed for kbootsplash 0.4.

I'am working on such an editor when the final 0.3 is released.

I hope you get debian workin' asap ;-) there isnt such a nice tool for debian, while for example mandrake just has an startup theme changer in their config tools.

I'am working on it, but it will take a while.

Yes, Mandrake and SuSE, both have the ability to change the starttheme. But only change and not install new one's.

The next fact is, that kbootsplash has lot's of more features than SuSE and Mandrake in their tools for changing the starttheme.

Of curse SuSE has the ability to change the resolution of the console and other tools according to this, but you have to find them in yast (e.g. Sysconfig Editor) and then look for the right settings in the used tools.

Kbootsplash has all the funcionality in one tool.

Debian support will be included, when I have found a solution to make this in a way, in which it works correctly. But by now, only SuSE and Mandrake are supported.

I'am sorry, that I can't help you at the moment. kbootsplash does not work with debian ath this time Currently only SuSE and Mandrake are supported.

The next supported Distributions will be:

- gentoo
- fedora core
- slackware
- debian

There are still some issues with the debian support, but I'am working on it. Perhaps in some further releases I will realise the debian support completly but now, even if you get it to compile and run under your debian system, it will tell you that debian is not supported at this time and exit.

just checked it - me has said stupid thing before (as user "jos") = ow, its not a kde bootsplash changer ;-)

but now - Mandrake has the change of bootsplash build-in in the mandrake control center... guess suse has something like that???

but I use debian now, and debian has no such tool (at least not that I am aware of)

so please? debian support???

thanks for the work!!!

ok... small summary...

THIS IS NOT FOR KDE! BUT FOR THE BOOTSPLASH IN LINUX! see bootsplash.org for more info.... newbies... duah...

Ok, I tested your app in my Mandrake, and it definetly does not work. I am sure mine does not work in SUSE. Apparently the distros take different approach for setting the bootsplash theme.

In Mandrake:
"/usr/share/bootsplash/scripts/switch-themes -l"
gives you the list of themes available. See my code for more info (ignore tabs and stuff). I used
"/usr/share/bootsplash/themes/$name/images/bootsplash-800x600.jpg "
for displaying something on the screen.

To change the theme, I did:
"/usr/share/bootsplash/scripts/switch-themes $name"

Hopefully you can fix your app to work in Mandrake as well. If you explain to me how does this thing work in SUSE, I will hack my own program to work on SUSE.

For detecting Mandrake, look for /etc/mandrake-release (or grep in redhat release for mandrake).

Version 0.2 will support Mandrake too.

Changing the bootsplash under SuSE will be found in my sourcecode.

If the "Linux" boot screen and the "KDE" boot screen could be combined in an automatic login? I know this is far fetched, but it might be possible with a frame buffer.
