Right now the icons are aligned to the left, as Windows 7 does. Can we have the option to make them centered (as Mac OS does), or aligned to the right (as no one else does)? (Aligned right would become aligned to the bottom on vertical panels.) - Nov 09 2011

Not sure why, but on my system (Fedora 16, 64-bit, also seen on Kubuntu 64-bit) when it is embedded in the taskbar, the icon is a question mark. I looked at the metadata file and the icon is supposed to be "utilities-terminal" which looks correct. Can you please add the option to choose an icon? That way if it doesn't get the icon right initially, I can always choose another. - Nov 07 2011
Icon Tasks

Plasma 4 Extensions by CraigD 642 comments

A relevant request if any KDE "royalty" is reading this (or maybe CraigD can forward to whoever's appropriate). I'm hoping that future versions of KDE might allow the end-user to configure how big the list of Recently Used Documents is. Once Icon Tasks is in use, we can suddenly accommodate a lot more items than the tiny list in Kickoff does. - Oct 12 2011

Integration with "Recently Used" is exactly what I was hoping for. An ability to pin documents to launchers would also be nice, but the "Recently Used" links were more important. Thanks for providing sane interfaces for those of us taking refuge from Gnome3! - Oct 03 2011

I've been waiting for "Smooth Tasks" to finally become what you've done with Icon tasks for a very long time. Between this and QtCurve, you're quickly becoming one of my favorite people in the KDE community. I don't know if anyone's asked yet, but I wanted to throw forth a suggestion:

Anything in Kickoff's "Recently Used" tab should appear in a context menu for any launcher (similar to Jump Lists). The ability to pin documents to the launchers would also be nice.

Having something like "jump lists" available in KDE may soon become very important if Windows 8 turns out to be "another Vista" as it's looking like. (WHY did MS take a cue from Gnome 3?) - Sep 26 2011
When I had to work with it in 2000, it really began to show that Linux was easier to use than "real" Unix. We started to call it "H-Pukes". :) Good theme for nostalgia! - Sep 20 2011

This theme certainly has my attention. For practical purposes, I'd want a version that kept the "metal" bits, but was plain, usable white instead of dark purple, --at least for the field backgrounds. Is such a version possible?

Looks great either way. - Jul 06 2011

The 4.6 version of the regular taskbar supports launchers, albeit they're kind of hidden in the context menu. If you can get the option to add a launcher a little more prominent, and add some kind of JumpList (maybe Zeitgeist powered?) that might be good enough to make me switch back off of Windows 7. (Sorry, I haven't tried this yet, but it's certainly caught my interest.) - Mar 31 2011

Plasma 4 Extensions by panzi 842 comments

There's an earlier thread and he is planning to add it. I'm trying out the launcher support now in the task bar of 4.6 beta. It's pretty minimal and rather hidden in the popup menus: If you look hard you find a menu item "Show launcher when not running" or something like that. What I'm hoping will happen with smooth tasks is integration with Zeitgeist or Nepomuk (or whatever's best) to get something like the Win7 Jumplists. (Consider that a feature request. :D DockbarX and Docky both use Zeitgeist.) - Dec 20 2010

The Kubuntu logo will be changed for Lucid onward (and I never cared for the old "huddle-of-gearheads" logo anyways). The new one looks like the "Circle-of-Friends" rendered AS a gear, instead of the gears where the friends' heads were in the old logo.

An article showing the new branding, with the new logo to the right of the word "Kubuntu," may be found here:

Various Gnome Stuff by daysofruin 21 comments

Speaking of the gnome panel, there's also the problem that with some themes, any buttons, menus, or other objects on the panel will not recognize the change when the panel background is set to use a solid color or a pixmap. The result is usually blank parts of the panel with the user settings, and items on the panel using the theme's background regardless of user settings. Any way this could allow people to preview that? Inconsistencies on the panel is the most common reason I choose to not use some themes. - Mar 24 2010
The Widget Laboratory

Various Gnome Stuff by daysofruin 21 comments

One thing I never liked with TWF is that the scrollbars (or sliders, or whatever-you-wish-to-call-them) take up the entire slot, and there's no way to preview the groove below them, or how the buttons behave when the slider is all the way top or bottom.

Also, I usually have to install a theme in order to see how it works with the gnome panel. Will the theme look stupid with vertical panels? ...with panels taller than 24 px?

Can you address these in Widget Laboratory? - Mar 24 2010

I like the Earl GTK theme, but for some reason it seems to cause crashes.

Nonetheless, I have been using the Metacity theme almost exclusively for something close to a year on my Gnome installations. It is clean, simple, it blends into almost any theme, it has similarities to MacOS without being a Mac Rip-off.

I hope you'll continue to maintain the Earl theme, and I certainly wouldn't mind separate GTK and Metacity packages.

I just figured that after using the Metacity theme for so long, I should take the time to say "excellent job." - Feb 25 2010

Can the icon to mark as junk be something different?

Request #2: Using Synaptic with this icon set on Ubuntu is very confusing. Can the icons that appear in Synaptic be a little closer to the originals? (Maybe a nicer looking empty checkbox, nicer looking checked box, etc. instead of the star, plus sign, chevron, etc.) - Feb 09 2010

Considering how long it might take for the KDE side to address bug 207902, would it be possible to temporarily add launcher support without it? It should be possible, if planned carefully, to code in a way that would allow one to easily rip out one implementation and retrofit another, so that it could easily be re-done the "right" way when available.

Without launcher support in the mean time, the closest thing to MacOS Dock and Win7 taskbar (which between the two of them are now the new "normal" way program launchers work) the only thing even available on Linux that comes close is Docky, which is designed for Gnome, requires mono, and otherwise has its own set of issues. - Jan 18 2010

One suggestion I'll make is needed for Plasma even though it doesn't apply to the original screenlet. Currently the only way to have this in a panel is to create an auto-hiding (or even non-hiding) panel off to one side. Some people might prefer it this way, but others might want an option to normally display as an icon (perhaps also indicating status) and pop up the main window when hovered for a few seconds or clicked. This should be optional as some users would still want the whole window, whether on the desktop or in a panel. - Oct 29 2009

A feature suggestion, or a challenge, depending on how you look at it:
A couple years ago the popular GTK engine "Murrine" began to support transparency. That support appears to be in the wild now, but very rarely used.

http://www.cimitan.com/blog/2007/12/12/gtk-rgba-transparent-widgets-with-the-murrine-engine/

How difficult would it be to add the option of transparency to the background, and possibly certain controls, for QtCurve? Bet it would look great now that transparent Window Decos for KWin4 are showing up.

Could it be done? - Oct 22 2009

It would be nice if I could "lock" the display. For example, when locked it would only display text of the last conversion (IE: "1 US Dollar = 46.8 Philippine Pesos"), but when unlocked the controls show and I can edit the amounts and change the currency types. - Oct 17 2009
