As mentioned about the old icons before, the only thing that was really wrong with them, was that they were difficult to see against a white background. If it was me, I'd probably run them through the Gimp and make the inside a slight blue or gray off-white; either that or just increase the contrast of any edges of the white portions of the icon. The new icons, which are essentially KDE4 Oxygen, also work quite well for my purposes.

For the next version, can you improve the contrast on the top and left of the folder icons, or maybe make the inside of the folders a little less bright? The icons look great on a desktop, but in a Nautilus window (unless using a dark theme) the white-against-white can make the folders a little hard to see.

That's my only gripe. A fantastic icon theme otherwise. - Mar 18 2009

It appears to want to use the package name "murrine". In Ubuntu, the package is "gtk2-engines-murrine". If I try to install the .deb, it will not treat it as an upgrade. I can't uninstall gtk2-engines-murrine in favor of this because there are some packages that depend on it.

Can you make a version that works with Ubuntu Intrepid and upgrades the existing package? - Mar 16 2009

There are a lot of icon themes that "work" with KDE 4 (mostly), but this is the first one I've tried other than the default Oxygen that really does work well, seems to be complete, doesn't have any missing icons that revert to Oxygen, etc. Regardless of the rating, I will also say that some of us who converted from Gnome really do appreciate the sense of Nostalgia. I've been running this, along with QtCurve (set to mimic Clearlooks), Plastic window decoration and color scheme, and the Aya plasma theme. It feels like I've come home to Gnome... --except it doesn't suck anymore. :D - Feb 02 2009

Excellent Plasmoid!

Here's a couple of suggested improvements: 1. Create a README that lists the explicit requirements (I just discovered I needed libcurl4-gnutls-dev on Kubuntu Intrepid). 2. Can you add a state/province field? I want to be sure I get Everett, WA and not Everett, MA. - Nov 29 2008

Hate to say this, but Kubuntu Interepid hasn't exactly been the rock-solid-robust-bug-free KDE 4 experience I was hoping for. :-S

The problem I experienced with the crash may well have been Plasma itself, or may have been a Kubuntu issue. *sigh* - Nov 10 2008

At long last, I have a digital clock in KDE that does not show military time. (Only took about 10 years).

My first attempt to put it in place made Plasma crash. I set to "h:mm ap", set the font to Liberation Sans, then clicked the button to set a custom color. Next attempt after that I left the font and color as they were, and it worked fine. (I do not know if the bug was your applet, or Plasma itself.)

Thanks for offering an alternative to the defaul. I never understood why the KDE team thinks we all want military time. - Nov 09 2008

Part of the whole point of using Plasma instead of something like Screenlets or Superkaramba is that the same applets can be used either on the desktop/dashboard or on the panel (as if there's no difference between karambas and kicker applets). Can you make this work better in small spaces such as the panel (including if the user has scaled it down to the height of a menu)? Maybe at smaller sizes it could omit the text weather description and simply list the place name and temperature to the left of the icon? - Jul 19 2008

I'm certainly aware that it can't be added as a native plasma widget as it is source code. Is there any technical reason someone couldn't compile it and create whatever kind of package Plasma wants to call it a "Native plasmoid?"

FYI: I did not have success compiling this a couple of days ago (which is why I asked for a native plasmoid) but I'll give it another try tonight. If I can figure out how to get it into a native plasmoid on my own I'll let you know. - Jul 17 2008

OK, so hoping that she won't get mad at me, I quietly snuck over to my wife's machine, booted it into Gnome, installed the theme, and I've posted a screen shot of the result. I see a couple of small artifacts at the corners of the range sliders, but otherwise I'm not sure what problem you're getting. I've also used this as my GTK theme at work (albeit in KDE4) for a couple of days without any problems.

Contact me through my profile on Gnome look, and try to get a screenshot my way. Once again this is not my work, and I'm a lot more familiar with Clearlooks than Pixmap, but I'll do the best I can to resolve any issues you (or anyone else) calls my attention to. - Mar 08 2008

For the time being I'm stuck in KDE while a large file is being converted to another format. When I can get back into gnome I'll investigate. It looked fine in Gnome on my end when I tried it just before the upload. To the best of my knowledge it doesn't mess with the fonts and just uses what the gnome font dialog tells it too.

As I said, I'll investigate further when I have the chance. - Mar 08 2008

Personally, the only part I think looks saturated is the highlight on menus. It would look nicer as a flat, even tone like the scroll bars are. I'd also like the option of a metacity theme in which the exit button is another color. Red would be nice, but would look too much like a certain other OS. Maybe black?

Terminal Screenlet

Conky by spdf 58 comments

I have it working in Ubuntu. It installs like any other screenlet. Pull up the Screenlets Manager, then click "Install Screenlet." Browse and select the package as downloaded from Gnome Look. You'll need screenlets version 0.0.12. Also, this method installs the Screenlet only to the one user. (You might be able to install it for all users by putting the package contents in /usr/local/share/screenlets, but I've found it far more reliable to use the "normal" installation method through the Screenlets Manager for each user that needs it.) - Feb 13 2008

The best "happy-medium" I've found between the default, functional icons Gnome has, and the glassy, photo-realistic look in Vista/Mac. The Murrine engine will soon support transparency and this should complement it well!

I'll have to see if this is still the case after I reboot, but whatever TheRob's fix did to adress the first issue seems to have also fixed the third one.

What I mean about issue #2: The background for the menus appears to be more of a plain black, while the rest of the panels has a "shiny plastic" look. I, personally, would like it better if everything had the 'shiny plastic" background consistently, but I have seen some themes that have a different background for the menu deliberately.

Great job on the theme! (Whether you think yourself a coder or not.) :) - Feb 11 2008

I love this theme. There's a few issues that need attention:

1. Right-click the desktop and select "Create Launcher." (About 90% of the themes on Gnome-Look have this problem. On my themes I either leave the panel as the normal window background, or I use a panel picture that is 2000 pixels tall.)
2. Can the menu backgrounds somehow match the panel background? (Not declaring a picture for the panel background *might* fix this, as well as issue #1.)
3. Install this: http://code.google.com/p/gnome-menu-file-browser-applet/ and notice that the text is black against black. Don't know who's side of the code that problem is on, but it would be nice if it worked. (Problem might well be in the applet's code.) - Feb 10 2008

Did you make sure the permissions are right? For ~/.themes:
sudo chown -R <your user>:<your group> ~/.themes
sudo chmod -R 755 ~/.themes

For /usr/share/themes:
sudo chown -R root:root /usr/share/themes
sudo chmod -R 755 /usr/share/themes
(For most themes on Gnome-Look.org, you want the decompressed contents of the package to go in /usr/share/themes.)

If you try to run the app on a clean account in which gnome has never been run, it will seg-fault every time. The work-around is to launch gnome-appearance-properties, close it, then try launching GTK-KDE4 again. (I'm using Ubuntu with KDE4).

Aside from that, this is fantastic. Now KDE4 is starting to become usable. - Feb 06 2008
