Yeah. I used to enjoy thought-out and beautiful work that took time to create too, until I found trash. Seeking out the garbage and otherwise adoring 5-minute works with tacked-on photos really makes me feel like a rebel. I also enjoy making word salads in my spare time. They're particularly effective when you throw in something attached to potential controversy or elitism. Try it sometime. - Mar 24 2009

Thanks for the icons, I love 'em :D

As posted in the other arch icon thread you posted, just in case someone sees this instead of the other:

For those using kdemod4 (will probably be the same for normal kde4 users, not sure), let me hopefully save you some frustration/confusion. I figured out how to make this work.

Writing over the icons in the oxygen folder as instructed didn't seem to do any good. Rebooting didn't seem to either. What did though was a combination of the original instructions and the below:

1) Switch to another icon theme (any theme will do, just switch and apply) and back.
2) Copy the start-here svg from the scalable folder in the tar file provided, rename it and move it to replace /usr/share/icons/oxygen/scalable/places/start-here-branding.svg ).

I think I did it this order: overwrite oxygen icons, replace start-here-branding.svg, switch icon theme to some gnome one I had installed, reboot, switch back to oxygen icon theme. Good to go :) - Mar 15 2009

Extract And Compress KDE4

Dolphin Service Menus by painkiller101 174 comments

Hello,

Thanks for the great servicemenus.

On kde 4.2.1 (specifically, kdemod 4.2.1 on arch linux), the servicemenu seemed to refuse to show "extract" menu entries (oddly, it showed some/all of the "compress" entries) from right clicking an icon directly on the desktop/folderview. I think it did work properly within konqueror, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Reboot, login/logout, kbuildsycoca didn't help. Upon switching %F with %U in extract menus, it worked fine. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two and if this -should- be changed to be quite honest, but this problem and fix were repeatable for me (I had done it on an earlier non-kdemod setup in comparing a working menu vs a non-working one, kde 4.1), so perhaps worth looking into. - Mar 14 2009

GTK2 Themes by JuanCR 6 comments

It would be more useful to post the answer where others with the same question can see it.

USUALLY all you need to do is open Appearance Properties in the system/settings menu on the main panel and drag-n-drop the downloaded .tar.gz file onto the appearance properties window.

SOMETIMES this isn't the case, such as these scenarios:

1) The tar.gz isn't split properly. 90% of themes here ARE split properly. However, some posters bundle multiple theme pieces together. You would need to fix this yourself, using other working themes as a sample or ask the author to fix it. Drag-n-drop in this case will say the file is invalid.

2) You need another GTK Engine installed. If drag-n-drop goes okay but you select your theme and see a nag in the window about a missing engine, just open your local package manager (often Synaptic Package Manager) and search for / install the one it's nagging about, it may be easily available.

Extra info:

1) You need to be using Gnome (default on Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian usually). Suse, Pclinuxos, kubuntu, etc use KDE 3/4 instead.

2) There are 'themes' and 'gtk themes'. Themes show up in the appearance window itself, and include lots of stuff: gtk theme, icons, etc etc. Others are just gtk themes, which will show up in the list if you click 'custom'.

3) Sometimes a log-out & log-in is necessary for the theme to show up properly. Rarely.

4) Sometimes the author mentions in the description what engine(s) is(are) needed, and if a special version is needed.

5) If you see a missing engine nag that doesn't actually give a name, it just says it's missing "", it's *probably* not an issue. Just log out and in again, see your luck. - Mar 13 2009

I looked into this, because I thought it was GPLed work, but apparently not.

http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaper/?midnightforest

Here is the original wallpaper, and rights are clearly reserved to the original author, no GPL. I looked around the *-look sites, same thing. I found a couple remakes of the wallpaper for beryl skydomes, but they gave credit and such to vlad as the license as opposed to giving an actual license.

JOKAR, please remove this or provide the permission from the author you were given. Or at the very least, change the license. This wallpaper is not GPL. - Jan 03 2009

Since this set from the screenshots appears to have copyrighted content (game logos like cod or wow), the license can't be GPL for the set.

It would be appreciated if you would either:

1) Remove those kinds of icons or
2) Change the license to proprietary or
3) Change the license to "Custom (Readme)" and include a README specifying what is actually GPL and what is not. I'm sure most people know well what isn't GPL, but it's a matter of legality, which the Linux community should uphold, in respect for both the copyright holders and the GPL itself.

Thanks :) - Dec 19 2008

Audioplayers by trialuser 73 comments

Thank you so much for your program. I have been fooling around with trying to get all manner of similar players to work without some kind of annoying quirk to no avail until now. Even better, it's QT and Pulseaudio works properly. Woot!

Thank you again!

I was about to ask a question, but I already solved it for myself, it seems.

In case anyone else is considering asking the same question, you can import winamp presets to qmmp via instructions similar to the routine for xmms/audacious, with slight tweaks (the eq.preset didn't seem to work, but eq.auto_preset does):

close qmmp

wget http://xmms.org/misc/winamp_presets.gz

(This will overwrite of course, so back up..)
gunzip -c winamp_presets.gz > ~/.qmmp/eq.auto_preset

They'll now correctly show up in the equalizer list under Auto Presets. - Dec 16 2008

Addendum of sorts:

Basically, the copyright for the logo itself is much more restrictive than CC. For instance, the CC is lenient about sharing the image, whereas the logo's license is not. The CC if I am not mistaken would allow for use on a distribution, for instance, but the proprietary logo does not have such leniency. Unless you can prove me wrong (which I may well be), it would be appreciated by those of us who care about legality on this site if you would fix it. - Nov 30 2008

Sigh. Can you please fix the license to proprietary or fix the image to remove proprietary content? Since the work includes a copyrighted logo/image/name, the work itself cannot be creative commons. I don't recognize the rest of the picture and I assume you made it yourself, which would make the picture fine to CC if you remove the logo if such is the case, but the picture as-is cannot be given CC.. - Nov 30 2008

I seem to have found some bugs or a setting I can't figure out. I'm not sure where to go to post it, so hopefully you can answer me here or point me in the right direction.

The first one is in konsole. If the 'tab bar' is set to 'top', it looks correct. However, if it is set to 'bottom', the tabs color like dull glass instead of shiny glass (every setting I have is shiny). It has the correct colors, sort of, but it looks obviously wrong.. see below for pictures.

Next, one class of buttons (default, non-default, active, or inactive? I dont know) do not color correctly if it is set as shiny glass. For instance, in the qtcurve settings menu, under general, if i set it to shiny glass the "cancel" button on the same window is colored "dull glass" whereas the ok button is "shiny glass". In some windows, like the firefox "restore previously opened sites?" dialogue, the buttons can be fixed momentarily as you grab and move the window around. Others magically fix themselves, like the ksnapshot cancel button fixed itself after taking a snapshot. This is more annoying than being unable to have the active tab in shiny glass. >_<

Below are some screenshots to demonstrate.

The 1st problem, correct tabs vs incorrect tabs respectively:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v412/FrozenFoxZ/snapshot11.png

The 2nd problem:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v412/FrozenFoxZ/snapshot9.png

If it matters, here's my qtcurve settings file exported. I'm not sure if this link will work as my host is a little silly about linking but here it is anyway.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you !!! I've been waiting for the active tabs to be chosen and working as shiny glass like they were maybe 5 versions ago for a very long time! Looks beautiful 100% instead of just 95% now. I'm honestly not a fan of the scheme, but I didn't down-vote it. It amuses me though, because your scheme colors are almost a direct placement opposite of the scheme I made for myself a long time ago. Ie, everywhere you have black I have blue, and everywhere you have blue I have black. Lookie:

Great job, adding it to my collection of awesome stuff. :) Oh, and may I inquire as to what font that is, if any (if not, it should be one!)? - Jan 22 2008
Wonderful. It did indeed work either way without error. Without cd, it puts the resulting cursor tar file in /home/fox. Thanks a bunch :) - Jan 12 2008
Ha, it seems I found the problem.

I neglected to cd to the directory containing the .CurXPTheme. I didn't know you had to be in the same folder for the one that is generated to work. What's strange is, I -don't- have to be in the same directory for the script to work if i choose --install. At least, if I only want to install it. The local copy still fails.

sd2xc-2.2.pl '/home/fox/Desktop/Zero/Blue_Persona.CurXPTheme' results in the aforementioned errors.

cd /home/fox/Desktop/Zero
then
sd2xc-2.2.pl ./Blue_Persona.CurXPTheme works perfectly.

Adding --install to either makes the installed version work fine, but the local folder copy it attempts to create fails if I'm not in the CurXPTheme directory. - Jan 11 2008
Hi,

This script is great, and the new modification for .curxptheme stuff rocks. However, I have a problem. I am on Linux Mint Daryna KDE CE at the moment. Note that this error occurs with every .curxptheme (with a different path/name of course) I've tried, and I consequently get an empty tar file on my desktop.

tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar: /home/fox/Desktop/Blue_Persona: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
mv: cannot stat `/tmp/sd2xc//home/fox/Desktop/Blue_Persona//home/fox/Desktop/Blue_Persona.tar.gz': No such file or directory

However, if i use the --install option, it installs and works perfectly, just the file on the desktop is empty and of course wouldn't work if i sent it to someone as it doesn't seem to be able to copy from the temporary directory; perhaps the '//' is the culprit?

Also, when it's installed, the name of the cursor is the full path to the original cursor, which is kind of annoying. However, another version of this same script I have does not have that problem, np-sd2xc.pl. I can send it to you if that would be helpful.

It would be great if these small problems could be addressed.

Thanks for your time and work :) - Jan 11 2008
