I applied the fix, but the problem still occurs. It's gotta be the nvidia binary... I had updated that driver right around the time I updated QtCurve, so it really could be that. Damn closed source!
- Mar 01 2009
Ok, I did some more debugging, and I don't think it's a QtCurve issue. I have been using the binary nvidia drivers, but when I switch to the open source nv driver, I no longer have the issue. No surprise that nvidia drivers are behaving strangely. ;) Sorry for wasting your time on that! - Mar 01 2009
I can confirm that the tab issue has been fixed. The menu item issue is still present. I have a screenshot, but not sure how to get it to you! - Feb 28 2009
A couple issues I have noticed with the latest .61 versions (I am using .61.3) in KDE 4.2:

Tabs in Konquerer file manager have the right part of their text cut off, sometimes mid-letter.

In dropdown menus, as you run your mouse down it, the options is highlighted as expected, but when you move to the next option, the highlight only partially clears. The menu ends up with a bunch of "ghost" highlights. I've also noticed this behavior in the Konqueror configuration dialog with the tree view.

Thanks for QtCurve... it's a really nice style!

Hey CraigD,

Thanks for QtCurve. It is seriously the best style out there. It has so many more options than other styles, and has such a slick look. I install it on all the developer laptops at work. It helps to make *nix systems look classy and gets past that issue I hate where GTK apps look different than Qt. You are doing the community a service here. Get Fedora to include this by default! I still have to create RPMs manually.

Thanks,
Moony

Plasma Themes by dimitrispan88 27 comments

Manual install was the only way for it to work for me as well. Using the appearance settings page in KDE4 doesn't work for some reason, even though it appears to install it.

Very nice theme though... I voted "good" for it. Now if only there was a way to get the vista start button with Plasma! - Jan 28 2009
I was getting those errors for awhile too... I unchecked "map KDE icons" in "Advanced" and I think that stopped it. Also, might want to make sure you aren't using gtk-qt-engine. - Jun 23 2008

Yep... so far so good. I removed gtk-qt-engine and installed a recompiled GTK2 version of QtCurve without the event filter. No memory spikes or crashes yet! Thanks!

Would you consider adding a feature that lets you modify the window background? I'm not talking about the desktop background, but the background inside a window (i.e. it's usually one-tone grey). KDE only seems to let you have a single color... it would be nice to have it fade between two colors from the top to bottom, or left to right in a window... or even use a gradient to accomplish that. Would you consider adding this?

Thanks! - Jun 18 2008
1. Well, it's gvpndialer, but it happens also with pidgin and fusion-icon, both GTK2 apps.

2. These were the cmake options (part of a rpm .spec file):

-DQTC_ADD_EVENT_FILTER=true \
-DQTC_MODIFY_MOZILLA=true \
-DQTC_MODIFY_MOZILLA_USER_JS=true \
-DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=%{_prefix} \

I'm sorry I wasn't able to capture more info about it... I have just the KDE3 version installed, and am using gtk-qt-engine now to theme the GTK2 apps.

I was running KDE3 with both the KDE3 and GTK2 packages installed and QTCurve enabled in KDE and Gnome. I noticed that GTK apps would slowly creep up in memory usage, even when I wasn't using them. One program started at 11 MB and ended up at 200+ MB before kswapd started going and I killed the processes. I ran "strace -p PID" on one of the programs, and every so often, it was searching around looking for qtcurvestylerc in various directories, finally finding it in ~/.config. I'm not sure if that is normal or not, but removing the GTK2 version of QTCurve seems to have fixed this memory leak. Any idea what is happening here? Thanks. - Jun 17 2008

Cursors by Chrispy 5 comments

For anyone interested, compiz fusion has a hopped up version of this called "showmouse". Also, I've developed a mouse trails plugin for CF.

Cursors by Chrispy 5 comments

Truly an interesting app, not necessarily for what it does, but what it *could do*, like mouse trails, etc. Anybody know how to capture events like clicks and such?

One problem I have is that my screen goes black after a coupld seconds, until I move the mouse again. I'm running compiz-fusion, so I'm sure it has something to do with that. - Apr 29 2008

Cursors by PurposeOfReason 53 comments

To install it, you need to unzip it into your mouse theme folder. This is in your home directory in the .icons folder. In other words, /home/yourname/.icons/ is where you should unzip it to. You can use a GUI program like ark to do that, or issue a command at the command line like:

# Create the directory if doesn't exist:
mkdir -p /home/yourname/.icons/

# Go to it
cd /home/yourname/.icons/

# Unzip your new theme
tar zxvf /path/to/downloaded/theme.tar.gz

Then you change your cursor in your appearance settings for the window manager you use (KDE, Gnome, etc.)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by CraigD 453 comments

I really like th concept of this program, but 2 major issues:

1. When I run /usr/bin/kgtk-wrapper /usr/bin/firefox, it tries to preload /usr/lib/kgtk/libgtk2.so. I'm running 64 bit though, so I get the "cannot preload, ignoring" message. If I manually change the path to lib64 in kgtk2-wrapper, then it works. Can't this be auto-detected somehow?

2. In Opera, If I cancel out of the KDE Dialog, my system goes into a tailspin, the hard drive goes nuts, the mouse gets choppy, and I have to manually reset my system!!!

I'm scared to go on. What can be done to fix these problems? Thanks.

One of the features of my CursorXP to X11 theme converter is to create left handed themes. You could try that on the original CursorXP theme:

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/CursorXP+to+X11+Mouse+Theme+Converter?content=72405 - Feb 24 2008
Without looking at the theme yet, my guess is that there is something non-standard in the theme. CursorXP authors don't seem to follow specs in many regards. :) I'll see if I can figure it out when I crack open this script again, hopefully within a week or two. - Feb 03 2008
Can you send me the theme you are trying to convert, and the command you are using that produces the problem? - Jan 12 2008
Your wish has been granted! - Jan 12 2008
You got it. ;) - Jan 11 2008
Yeah, that makes sense. I tested it with using another path and a relative path, but it worked for a reason I won't get into. Now, with 2.2.1, it should work with a relative path or absolute path to the .curxptheme file. Definitely let me know if you still have problems. - Jan 11 2008
Well, whatever is happening with you is not *supposed* to happen. ;) What is the command you issued that caused this output? - Jan 11 2008
Hmmm... not sure why it's not there. Maybe someone else has experienced the same thing and can shed some light on this? - Jan 10 2008
You might try the package named: perl-Image-Magick

I don't know for sure... I just found that by googling. - Dec 27 2007
Yes, that was my oops. Redownload and try again. Sorry! - Dec 26 2007
Thanks for the info. I've updated the instructions above. - Dec 26 2007
Yes, it does. It also supports variable frames of that animation. E.g. first show frames 1-10, then show frames 11-20 over and over. - Dec 26 2007
Creating a mouse theme... Well, you can try this:

man xcursorgen

...although that will give you very limited information (that's the way Linux man pages work it seems ;). You manually create png images (there is no free lunch) and give xcursorgen a config file that describes what to do with that/those png images. If you give it one line, it makes a static cursor, if you give it many lines, it makes an animated cursor. You then do this for each cursor you want (pointer, crosshair, ibeam, etc.). It's basically *begging* for a script to do all that dirty work because doing it manually is a PITA.

There are programs/scripts like gursormaker which help in this, and other programs like sd2xc.pl which convert CursorXP themes into X11 themes. I am currently modifying sd2xc.pl to do much better conversion of CursorXP themes than it previously did, with extra options as well. I'm also working on a script to convert Windows mouse cursors into CursorXP themes (which you can then convert to X11 themes).

I dunno about Gnome, but in KDE, you can use Konqueror file manager to view the individual mouse cursor files as thumbnails. I'm not sure, but they may or may not be in png format in actuality, after they've been processed by xcursorgen. Also, I've found very few clear instructions about X11 mouse cursors in general- using them, creating them, etc. Maybe I'll have to write something up from all my trials. - Dec 25 2007
The lack of a proper theme file is due to the script (not mine) that I use to convert Cursor XP themes to X themes. It's under a BSD license, so I am modifying it to work properly(er) and will release my modified version under a GNU license, which I believe is possible.

Sorry about the quirkiness with Gnome... I only use KDE, and posted the files to kde-look.org, which I've since gathered is part of some conglomerate of other sites. I would like to make sure these work in Gnome, so I'll keep up on that, but not for at least a few days here.
- Dec 14 2007
With my limited experience in Gnome, and after poking around, I can't say for sure what would cause that problem. I was able to successfully change to use any of these cursors in gnome by using gcursor. I believe the theme needs to be unpacked into a subdirectory of ~/.icons/ first and then run gcursor. Perhaps someone else in the know can fill us in? - Oct 20 2007
Hrmmm... honestly, I only tested them in KDE. I'll have to look into it. - Oct 19 2007
Hours and hours of screwing around. Really. More specifically:

1) David Turner patched libraries similar to these: http://www.bevenhall.se/jim/fedora-cleartype/ (but mine were manually patched from these sources: http://jaganath.wordpress.com/2006/11/16/cleartype-lcd-patch-on-mandriva-linux-2007/ )

2) Subpixel hinting / antialiasing on.

3) Modification to ~/.fonts.conf to render Segoe UI using "slight" hinting, and to reduce the width to 95% of normal (needed for 9pt, IMHO):

<match target="font" >
<test qual="any" name="family" compare="eq" >
<string>Segoe UI</string>
</test>
<edit name="hintstyle" mode="assign" >
<const>hintslight</const>
</edit>
<edit name="aspect" mode="assign" >
<double>0.95</double>
</edit>
</match>
