Any idea why? - Apr 05 2005

2. How to rearrange the position of the application on the dock?

Open ~/.kde/share/apps/kooldock/menu, and manually change the names of the .desktop files there. They appear on the dock in alphabetical order. Restart the dock, and it'll be in order. - Jan 03 2005

All 8 of these could have been uploaded as a single entry with, for example, the download at 1600 orange and one screenshot at 1600 purple. People can then resize. There is no need to cover the front page with multiple uploads of the same image. - Dec 01 2004

I like this version, it fits better than the previous ones.

And I don't understand the previous comment...

But wouldn't it be a better idea simply to use the "update" feature, rather than re-submitting slight changes as new wallpapers? - Nov 23 2004

Also like the other desktops on your home site.

Just a suggestion, I've been searching the net for instructions on how to upgrade Mandrake 10.0 or 10.1 to KDE3.3, but can't find them. Since you obviously know how, a tutorial on your site would both go down well and be a good resource. What do you think> - Nov 22 2004

I like the icons a lot. Some, like man.png or the rpm/tar/tgz ones, could be a little more realistically 3D, as they currently look a bit flat. But there is potential for a good set here, which I would certainly add to my computer. - Sep 26 2004

Lovely photo, thanks - none of this blue sky rubbish that ruins pictures of Scotland!

But Edweirdo, really - Are you English? It's Loch Ness, Loch pronounced like the German ch on ich. Loch means Lake in Scotland - there are actually only two lakes in the whole of Scotland, all the others are called Lochs. I like the idea of Konqui in Loch Ness though - I'd vote it up if you put it here! - Aug 19 2004
Linux the F1 of OS

Wallpaper Other by biagio 14 comments

Why does it have to be linux related? It's a very nice picture, resounding of quality and power. Adding a tux or kde tag would be tacky and nasty, and destroy the style of the picture entirely.

I think it's a great picture the way it is. I also know that I'm using Linux, and don't need my wallpaper to remind me of the fact. - Aug 05 2004

Hi, like the theme, and have used it since it came out. But there seems to be a problem with the drop down menus, on the forward and back buttons - the clickable area for the drop-down menus does not correspond well to the small black arrows, with unexpected results...

Education Apps by joachim 97 comments

Whatever field this belongs in, I'm glad it's here - thanks! Bible study programs are an increasingly selling application for Windows and Mac OSX, and since starting to use Linux seriously I've had to use an online one whenever I wanted access to the powerful computer functions that flicking through the pages doesn't always allow.

It does appear that this has been written for Christian study, so perhaps it would have been better in Education or other software. But since it doesn't clearly fit into any category, give the author a break - it's an important app, which will have a huge uptake with the increasing use of Linux (remember the Bible is by far the best selling book in the world, and always has been. Even if you don't believe in it). - May 18 2004
SuperKaramba for MDK 10

Karamba & Superkaramba by bartosak 9 comments

I could never get it to work in 9.2 either, but it seems to work much better in 10.0, so long as you use Superkaramba version 0.32b, NOT 0.33, as 0.33 is incompatible with KDE 3.2. But urpmi installs 0.32b, so it worked ok in my case. - May 17 2004

So far, all I am able to do with this is draw three small crosses. Even if there is more funtionality, it should be documented as the project evolves.

That said, it's about time someone made a good GPL CAD program for Linux. I hope you manage! If I can help in any way please let me know - probably not so good at the coding side of things, but I do have some basic experience. And would be willing to throw myself at it. - May 12 2004

Graphic Apps by clarence 40 comments

I dual boot Windows XP and Mandrake 10.0. I'm studying Engineering at Uni, and there are 2 basic applications for which I still use Windows - Paint (for producing simple diagrams) and Matlab. Well, Matlab can be bought and run on Linux, and now I won't need to use Paint any more...

This has many simple, intuative features. I particularly like the ability to "draw" transparent. Very much filling a space in KDE.

One request is that it would be useful to be able to chose the compression level when saving in .jpg format.

Oh, and nice to see it called "KolourPaint," instead of "KolorPaint!" ;) - May 12 2004

...But the method of rotation is not intuative. Currently dragging right rotates clockwise. This "feels" right if the first click is at the middle back, but anywhere else and it feels wrong. Similarly, it rotates the top forwards if dragged down, which only feels right if first clicked in the bottom half of the screen.

A great improvement would be to make it rotate anti-clockwise when dragged to the right if clicked at the front, and clockwise (like currently) if clicked at the back. Similarly, rotate top-forward if dragged down from the front, and top-back if dragged down from the back.

This quantity of rotation should be scaled dynamically according to the distance of the click from the centre of the screen, so clicking near the centre of the screen would produce a larger rotation for the same drag-length - more accurate rotations would be possible by clicking nearer the edge of the screen. This would create a "grab and drag" type of environment, where you would intuatively know which way the tile you first grabbed would move.

As I said at the start though, the graphics are good, and the rendering is well done. Keep it up! - May 11 2004

Set as background service

Dolphin Service Menus by ben 11 comments

This is really good, and works well. However the install has a small problem - I don't know about other distributions, but in Mandrake, the "--global-instal" option should copy the .desktop file to /usr/share/apps/konqueror/servicemenus/, not $KDEDIR/share/..., as in the install file.

Good work though! Gets my vote. - May 07 2004

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by ipv4 223 comments

You need to do it manually - in folder ~/.kde/share/apps/kooldock/menu are all the .desktop files which appear on the bar. They are sorted alphabetically by name, so simply put 01, 02, 03... infront of each name to make it sort them in the desired way, eg I have "11-kwrite.desktop" as one of my entries. This doesn't effect the name that appears above the icon on the bar, that's changed from within properties. - May 06 2004

Desktop Icon Grouping

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by Justace 17 comments

Um, not being cynical, but isn't this just what early versions of Windows had? Desktop groups, which could minimise to icons...

Personally, I hardly have any icons on the desktop - I use about 20 programs regularly, of which 17 are in kooldock along the bottom of my screen, on autohide so that they don't clutter the screen, but I can get them whenever I want. I don't have a single program icon on the desktop, as it's too difficult to get to them.

Nice screenshot though! - Apr 24 2004
