nature of this site. KDE-Look.org is not a girlie picture site or a soft porn site. If you want to make a theme involving this model, then by all means do so but don't post some wallpaper that is nothing but a girlie picture which is nothing compared to the stuff that people who want to waster their time on the net can find easily. - Dec 05 2002

I've installed Qinx on other distros before successfully, it's just that this time under Mandrake 9 the Style isn't listed within Control Centre although the Qinx Colours and Window Decoration are listed. I've checked /usr/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/ and i have qinx.so and qinx.la. Any ideas why it's not listed? When configuring I used '--prefix=/usr' for Mandrake as this is where the KDE stuff goes. - Dec 04 2002

Screensavers by dfn5 7 comments

Feel free to email me directly with build problems. dnewman@maraudingpirates.org

This screensaver was developed on a redhat 7.3 system with KDE 3.0 installed in /usr as well as Solaris with KDE 3.1 installed in /usr/local.

So here is what I emailed the first person with this problem:

Have you tried setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /opt/kde3/lib
before running configure? Does it find Qt? Where is that
installed? What kind of system is this that you are trying
to build it on? And can you send me the config.log? That
might shed some light on why it isn't finding kdelibs.

Noia for KDE 1.00

Icon Sub-Sets by Carlitus 258 comments

Hi Carlitus,

Just a suggestion: could you make the player action icons (player_play, player_stop, etc.) a little more colorful? Maybe something that would look more like mail_get, I like that one!

In general, the icons that are mostly shades of gray are the ones I don't like as much as the rest of Noia icons.

I am writing a KDE wrapper for mplayer, which as you probably know is one of the best media players on Linux. So an app icon for a video/media player would be great, too.

Thanks again! - Nov 30 2002

Icon Sub-Sets by Carlitus 258 comments

Thanks much for the improvements in v0.90.

V0.90 makes already excellent icon set even better!! The best thing is that the "pale" feeling about this icon set is gone. Now, this is by the best icons for KDE3.x!!! Creative, original, pleasant to look at and funcitonal :).

A couple of comments:

1) Is it possible to have a SVG icons for noia?

2) Why the konsole icons have become "black" ? I liked the original bluish tint for konsole icons :).

Noia for KDE 1.00

Icon Sub-Sets by Carlitus 258 comments

You said: "Now it's time to say wich are the bad designed icons."

Well, most of them are good or excellent! The only ones I struggle a bit to figure out are KMail's reply, reply all and forward icons. What are the grey shapes in the background? Envelopes? The arrows on them are a little hard to see as well, the arrow design looks _very_ good in Konqueror, but at this size maybe a more simple design would be better?

Thanks for bringing Noia to KDE.

The SuSE bootsplash does not support a progress bar yet. On a SuSE Linux 8.1 you can untar the following tgz:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/stepan/bootsplash/Theme-Flower.tar.gz in /usr/share/splash/themes/, change the current splash theme in /etc/sysconfig/hootsplash to "Flower" and run the following as root:
SuSEconfig --module bootsplash

thanks for bringing back the 0.71 3floppy icon :)

by the way, gvim icon is still not shown under the kde menu (i'm still using good old kde 2.99 (3.rc3) originally packed with conectiva 8)

now there's something that i've been thinking since i downloaded v 0.8: even though i really like the new konsole icon, i was wondering why did you make it to be the default kensole icon?

please don't get me wrong, i really DO like it, and i think it should definilty be a part of the final package. But the thing is that it looks kinda rustic or not as clean as the rest of the set or i don't know: it simply looks different from the rest of the icons.

i've been donwloading your icon set since i don't even remember what version, and i thought that i knew were you where heading with your desing (clean, crisp, delicate, armonic, simetric, light...) and that's why i don't quite understand why you decided to make it the default konsole icon.

please do keep that icon beacuse it actually is a really good one, it is a marvelous option it's just that i didn't understand: why default?

anyway, maybe that was me thinking outloud...

on other icons:

xfig: really beautifull :)

koffice: i like them all even tough i don't use koffice (i use openoffice :)).

gimp: cool... !

wine: mmm :( that i don't like that much but that's fine by me beacuse i don't even have a win partition (conectiva is the one and only OS on my pc).

conetiva icon: ups there's no one yet ! (jaaaaaajajajajajajajajajaja just kidding!)

thanks and usuall and i hope didn't bore you with my comments :)

keep up the good work! - Oct 30 2002
[Keramik] Transparent Kicker (TARBALL)

KDE 3.0-3.4 Themes by dcpark 86 comments

Haha, i got it to install. So beautifull. Thank you very much!!!!

If you are having trouble with the build script, try my method here.

1. download the pre-compiled keramik tarball. It is still available at kde-look.org by the time of this writing.

2. download the appropriate version of kdelibs tarball

tar -xvjf kdelibs-blahblah
cd kdelibs-blahblah

it will take several hours to compile :p

now, copy the keramik precompiled binary to the directory kdelibs-blahblah/kstyles/

go to kdelibs-blahblah/kstyles directory

tar -xvjf keramik.tar.bz2
or whatever the file is

go to kdelibs-blahblah and run

go to keramik directory

make install

now you should be able to get the original keramik. To get the translucent taskbar version:

untar the keramik_translucent tarball

copy transkicker-keramik.patch to kdelibs-blahblah/kstyles

open the file with your favorite text editor.

change everything that say /keramik/kstyles/keramik to keramik/

patch -Np1 -i transkicker-keramik.patch
cd keramik
make install

that's it. enjoy :) - Oct 28 2002

KDE ist was bessers ? HA!! Das ich nicht lache. Es wird immer schlimmer....

a RPM is a bit difficult because the changed bits are parts of kdebase. anyway, ther way it is now, if you don't have the appropriate images, it draws the old dull black arrows.

I'm not maintainer/developer on kicker (not yet anyway), but if people agree, i'd like to see it making 3.1 :)

As for the clock plug-in, i'm sure the developers thought on allowing the kicker background before. Think along "background tiles" and strange (ie complicated) background image... :) - Oct 25 2002

In English we use an upper case i in "I'm", (as well as at the start of a new sentence, and for proper nouns.)

You also wrote:

Which should be:
"...if it doesn't, put an a."
Better yet:

then you should at the very least post the copyright holder and the site of origin in the description, and preferably the photographer's and model's names as well.

not to mention the fact that distributing the work without the copyright holders concent is illegal, and www.kde-look.org could be held responsible. if you want to break the law, perhaps you should do it directly to the other person, so that other people arent liable, or simply reply to the person's post with a url to the place you originally got the images (assuming they are free for download). this isnt about artistic purity, its about legality, and comon courtesy.

ps, i am not stating my issue on the copyright laws, im just saying what they are. - Sep 08 2002

ill SuSE 8.1 be shipped with KDE 3.1 and these great Crystal icons? There are still sooo many icons that need to be done for Crystal, and a rush job is a terrible thing, will it really be complete by the end of October?
It would also be great if SuSE 8.1 would ship it's distribution early November. Here's why:

KDE 3.1
GNOME 2.0.3
KOffice 1.2
Liquid 0.9.6
Gkrellm 2.0 is already released, but don't forget to include it.

Take in account that RED HAT's Null is now friendlier than SUSE, especially for new users. They also have a even more attractive desktop with the stunning icons they made and now GNOME and KDE have a consistent look.
Also I suggest that you follow Red Hat's lead and replace titles of programs whicha ren't self explanatory with self-explanatory names. Another good thing is if there weren't 10 options in each section and only the best few. For example in the e-mail section Ximian Evolution 1.0.8 is clearly the best. But, who would guess Evolution is an e-mail program. I think it would be best if Redhat replaced all the program names with names like "Email" where only the best program would be there so not to confuse new users.
However that might upset other users who are familiar, so at SUSE's welcome screen there should be an option to select the type of menu they want. First and default choice should be something like "Easy Menu" and the second "normal menu" which would include the real names and all the good applications in each section, not just the best one. For example in E-mail there could also be K-mail and Mozilla's e-mail client.

Check out Red Hat's stunning Menu: http://www20.brinkster.com/winterwolf64/redhat%20menu.JPG

Another cool thing is that you can install and uninstall things. In SUSE 8 when I click Uninstall it's a mess there are so many little parts of the programs I have to uninstall, and it doesn't even tell em what they are etc. I have yet to understand that confusing mess.
Now check out Redhat's package management: ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/screenshots/redhat08.jpg it's not only attractive it's also easy and intuitive. I really wish there was something in SUSE especially since the complete install has so many programs. A thing like that for installation would be great too. OR to be able to play solitaire while installing instead of seeing adds or which package is being installed.

Switching to something like APT would also beg reat, it's so easy to update or get new software with Connectiva's Synaptic apt frontend it would be great if suse used something like taht. You could ahve something like CLick-N-RUn or IRIS. I also wish that you took example from lycoris, SAMBA was intalled and I could actually get my printer to work and view my other WIndows computers hard drives. SuSE needs to do this too. As well as Folders in XP style for My Music, My pictures etc.

Sorry if this is sloppy, but SUSE needs to stand out and now Redhat, Xandros, lycoris, lindows and ll of the distributions are improving so fast. I think you should wait at lesat til early november before releasing your distro. You could eb teh first with KDE 3.1 and GNOME 2.0.3 etc. - Aug 30 2002
KSplashManager (was Splashman)

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by bretzeltux 82 comments

I have deleted splashman0.5 and
downloaded and compiled "ksplashman-0.6b.tar.gz".
..Thanks for adding a "test-part"...

A little bug...:
When i runed splashman0.6b the first time after i installed it, he asked me again where the location of the "base directory" was,. The splashman base directory was set automatically to "/home/toon/.kde3/share/apps/splashman_db".
Normally this would be good, but the first time i installed splashman(0.5) i had set that directoty to "/home/toon/.splashman/", SO , i changed the "base directory" to "/home/toon/.splashman/". But after i restarted splahsman (as recommended), the program uses "
/home/toon/.kde3/share/apps/splashman_db" as base directory. - A little bug i guess...-

A second even more little bug:
On my machine (mandrake 8.2) ther e are no icons on the buttons: "launch...", "remove..", and "quit".

(i don't know where -in which file, wich line- the buggs are because i can 't programma c++ very good.-i am learnig it :-) - Aug 17 2002
Keramik RPM (for RH + KDE 3.0.3)

KDE 3.0-3.4 Themes by alspnost 61 comments

Hi people,
what about these ideas..
is it also a speed hit, if the color of the tapped-pane is diffrent of the window-background color ? look at the default style of WinXP, that is really a complete Look!
and, what about, if the awful border of the Kicker will dissapear?! if you put a nice background-pic, but anyway, there is the "waaaaa" grey (or what ever) border that is really misplaced.. the size should be set to "0". Example: WinXP.
i can't imagine that this is so much work..;) and, another thing, to give KDE a great Look is, to separate the Style-pixmaps of the Taskbar-items from the same Style-Pixmaps of Konquerors 'Detailed View-Mode'(look at items "Name, Size, Typ,...")

Till now, it seems, that there is anything equal of the Taskbar and the Konqueror's 'Detailed View-Mode'

My opinion is, that KDE will be perfect, if it could look just like any Desktop.

Some other nice things would be..
"giving every virtual desktop of KDE an own handling of Text-Color, and/or Hiding the Icons. Imagine.., that could be useful for a "Presentation-Mode" or whatever, for example, if people are getting mad of too much icons on their Desktop ;)

An example: it doesn't make any sense, if you can change the text-color or the Icons of only 1 desktop to be able to read the Names/text. because, if you switch to another virtual desktop, with a beautiful background-picture, you may notice. that you can't read the text at all, because it has got the same color like the picture..
People with bad Eyes may have got problems to read it!

Anyway, i switched completly from Windowz to Linux, with the great KDE, i love it!
thx - Aug 16 2002
[Keramik] Transparent Kicker (TARBALL)

KDE 3.0-3.4 Themes by dcpark 86 comments

I'm NOT a newbie. I am fortunate that I encountered many friendly people who helped me understand how Unix works and how to solve problems.

In this case, the failure to install properly on SuSE 8 is an oversight on the programmer's part (Gee, you mean he doesn't run every single Linux distro?). There's an easy work-around:

cp build_trans-keramik.sh foo && sed 's/\$KDEDIR/\/opt\/kde3/g' foo > trans-keramik.sh

This is what educators call a "teachable moment." If we show the newbie that script files and Makefiles are plain text that can be read and modified, the newbie takes an important step on the path to enlightenment.

Just my .02

Ok - here's a little more info:

I have qt2 in /usr/lib/qt-2.3.2 with symlinks /usr/lib/qt and /usr/lib/qt2 pointing to it.

Then, I have /opt/qt-gcc3-2.3.2 for using gcc3. So when I set

export QTDIR=/opt/qt-gcc3-2.3.2

It should be possible to automate a great deal of the framing, but there are two drawbacks.
First, only 90% of the other's themes icons could be processed automagically. The rest has to be manually fitted into the frame. I can show you some examples of possible failures if you want to. :-)
Second, many icons from some themes are definitly not suitable for marbelization and must be replaced by icon from other sets.
But there may be a way to do it semi automatically. I'll think about it. - May 01 2002
