Beryl/Emerald Themes by BCMM 16 comments
This is a theme for Emerald, which is a window manager for hardware accelerated desktops with the Beryl compositing manager.
You aren't supposed to try and extract the archive either. You should run emerald-theme-manager, press the "Import" button, and select the .emerald file from the location you downloaded it to.
This will only work if you're already running Emerald and Beryl. Last time I checked, this generally involved unsupported drivers on Ubuntu, but that may well have changed since then. - Apr 15 2007

I'm using the GTK theme "Milke", which matches quite nicely. http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=23687
BTW, I stopped using GTK-Qt precisely because it tends to crash with Baghira.
I think the corners are configured in Baghira's config program, under Special widgets > kicker > remove bevel.
However, they are not always rendered correctly when using Beryl, as you can see in the top right of this screenshot. - Jan 14 2007

There is also a ? symbol, on the far right, for windows which use it.
I've just realised that for some reason, the buttons are missing on some windows in the screenshot. I don't know why that is, they are usually always there. It is possible that I had just restarted Beryl. I don't remember, but I'd better take a better screenshot. - Jan 14 2007

I also find this nicer to use than a normal-looking theme, e.g. Plastik, but that might just be a matter of taste. Plastik is a bit ugly.
Maybe this would be no fun on an LCD. Dunno. I hate LCD screens. - Jan 12 2007
I use a different xorg.conf for everyday use than for watching videos with my card's tv-out, because I don't want to have to have cloned mode on all the time and be forced to use the low resolution that TVs support on my CRT.
However, I use xgame-gtk2 and a script I wrote for that ATM. - Nov 12 2006

Please don't use this ebuild; it is just a renamed 0.7 ebuild. Today or tomorrow, hopefully, I will put my working ebuild on KDE-Look (I'm just seeing if it compiles now). - Oct 10 2006

It seems that version 0.8 includes the patch already. You probably want to edit the ebuild to remove the patch if you don't want it to break on GCC 4.1 systems.
I could post a fixed ebuild if you want. - Oct 06 2006

I haven't tested this, but I think if you change it from
C(7)N(7)X:I(2)T:S:OSX Layout
to
S:I(2)T:X(7)N(7)C:OSX Layout
It should look how you want it to.
Will test later when I have time. - Sep 12 2006

Also, I find that the metadata doesn't always update at the end of tracks.
Also, is it possible to make amaroK not report tracks listened this way to last.fm?
BTW, other than these few quirks I like this script a lot. - May 28 2006

Also, an amaroK theme is something more specific: a theme just for the sidebar on the left (which is actually a KHTML page), using CSS and sometimes images.
"Mockup" or "idea" in the title would be a good idea though. - May 05 2006

I suspect it may be to do with using small images which repeat to cover the background. Maybe KHTML gets delayed over each time it has to render /images/background.png? (small image of brushed metal which matches Baghira when tiled; I think you used it unmodified as /images/back.png. IIRC I made it by cropping the background from the original Brushed Blue, which used a single large image because it didn't need to support scrolling).
Maybe making the image a bit bigger so it only gets rendered 2-3 times would make it render faster?
Do your other PNGs repeat at all?
Is it possible that in background.png I have used some stupid encoding option in Gimp which makes it take longer to render? I don't know much about the PNG format.
In any case, this is all hard for me to test because I get this problem only intermitently. Can someone who can reproduce the performance thing try my theme to see if it is affected too? Thanks a lot. - Mar 25 2006

In the screenshot, I am using an excellent KDE QT style called Baghira, which you can find on KDE-Look if your distribution doesn't package it (Gentoo does).
It is a MacOS X imitation, and has two main modes, brushed metal (like Quicktime or iTunes) and Aqua (like most of MacOS X), which you can use at the same time in different applications.
The screenshot shows amaroK using my CSS theme with the Baghira Brushed style. - Mar 25 2006
