Not must. But believe me, I am using djvu a lot and can tell you that it has usually half the size of a PDF with embedded TIFF in medium/low quality black and white which is exactly what fax images are. Plus it is completely free/gpl. You can ignore other djvu-formats like those with higher color depth. Actually djvu is one format with 3 different compression algorithms, each for another situation. - Jul 16 2006

Graphic Apps by aserghei 10 comments

you could consider also to support djvu files, since djvu is very good for fax images, even better than tif in most cases. You could probably take some code from the existing qt viewer program. I forgot its name... - Mar 08 2006

Yes, I did not like this dialog either. Good to hear somebody started some changes...

Another suggestion: klicking a category will result in loading of the picture files. On older computers this takes some time sometimes (depending on the amount of icons). It would be nice to cache the pictures so they don't need to be reloaded when I switch categories. The cache can be deletet when the dialog is closed. - Feb 21 2006

Shouldn't it rather be displayed under "compress" than "actions". This would provide a clean and ark compatible way and doesn't look odd. - Jan 31 2006

I have not experienced any crash till now and I have also used previous versions. The only annoying thing is that uPnP does not work and I have to forward port manually.

I would also doubt that any crash you experienced is triggered by qt. It is rather probable that it is caused by your inability to manage and install software than the fact that qt is "a piece of shit".
Concerning azureus, it is good software indeed but eats my memory i want to use for something else. This is due to the design of java runtime und bindings under linux. So _this_ is a piece of shit.

I encourage the developer to continue the developement of ktorrent because it seems very promising to me!

Go on. - Jan 22 2006

Unfortunatly, the upnp plugin doesn't find any device in my network, azureaus does...

Thanks, I appreciate your work. I just couldn't understand why somebody took so much time to write this plugin but didn't have the 10 minutes to write a short descriptional text. :)

No really, screenshots are candy but at least _some_ text is obligatory.

However, good work... - Nov 21 2005

Beside the qualtiy of the plugin everything running into this "description" will probably not follow any link and open some text file. I usually do not because most good software has a some information here. That's the attempt of kde-apps, to provide rating and description of the applications. Sorry, better delete this entry. - Nov 20 2005
IDEA: desktop areas

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by pajaro 14 comments

I really like the concept. My attempt, though, was to patch kdesktop to show areas, which are representing folders in ~/Desktop still using normal files. This would make it compatible with other environments and bring more order to my desktop. Backgrounds are good too. I would even like desktop areas, that could be minimized... - Nov 18 2005

Future of SimpleKDE -Raleigh-

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by nunogomez 11 comments

Diving the desktop is a nice feature, I like it. But I think, when developing new concepts we should always make it as compatible to conventional technologies as possible.

Because under UNIX, everything is file-based, I would suggest this generic approach:

Each directory created under ~/Desktop gets an own section on the Desktop, this would also make them avaible within other window-managers. If you don't like that, you can specify a different Desktop directory in KDE.

Think father... - Oct 26 2005
Command Executor

Amarok 1.x Scripts by AndrasGBekes 4 comments

Wouldn't it be neat to not tag files but have a (expandable) list of commands in a list that could just be dragged into the playlist and be executed like a song would be played?

could be:
shutdown(over kdm)
jump(no. of tracks)
shell command(command line)
changevolume(new volume or steps to increase)
restartplaylist (would replace toggle button)

This would be a really powerful approach to make amarok the most extensible and usable player in the world. - Oct 25 2005
Bind F4(open terminal) to Yakuake

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by peppelorum 26 comments

Why not enter it as terminal application, under kcontrol->kde components->terminal

I have done so and it works just fine in konqueror.

I don't know where else it is used in kde, but just adding an -e switch to the script would make it compatible to most virtual terminal calls. So this should work quite genericly. - Oct 23 2005

Wireless Assistant

Network by pnawrocki 287 comments

I like your way to continuously bring up new and better versions.

Some things that did work before, but don't in this version are:

1. my iwlist/iwconfig shows this error message above each output, but this can be changed by redirecting the sterr output to /dev/null:

Warning: Driver for device eth2 has been compiled with version 17
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 16.
Some things may be broken...

Unfortunately a /sbin/iwlist 2> /dev/null doesn't work in the settings, so I had to write a wrapper script that does it for me.

2. Besides the essid column, no one can be resized.

3. Programm still reports mode: Master instead of mode: Managed with orinoco_cs module. iwconfig output is ok, so how do you obtain the mode?

I hope you can fix these things. Everything else is just what I needed :) - Apr 18 2005

Wireless Assistant

I like your application, even though it is only graphical and user specific.
A working aquivalent for the console would be good.

For the next future I only propose:
- kicker applet (optional)
- option: don't ask for key if its name matches the network essid (in most cases that is obvious); maybe a checkbox for each key
- automatic mode which connects without user interaction by a certain set of rules

rules could be: a priority number assigned to each network, but this would require a remember function or the simplest: prefere open networks. - Apr 03 2005
Wireless Assistant

Network by pnawrocki 287 comments

I have seen several approaches to implement a programm able to manage different wifi profiles. To provide best usability it should support these features:

- Having a rank list and being able to connect automaticly to preferrend networks
- Save each profile in one configuration file to easily exchange profiles from one user/computer to another
- Being independent from X and or console frontends (which doesn't mean they are not useful)
- Support encrypted und unencrypted network connections
- Being able to execute programs after establishment of connection (e.g. VPN client)

If more projects would support the same profile files, it would be best!

This is my user opinion after many many problems with such programs. - Mar 15 2005

It does not work under Mandrake 10.1, at least it's settings won't apply. Everything seemes correct despite you can't preview mandrake-installed splash screens.
Changing to installed splashscreen seems ok but does not work, it still boots with previously from mandrake control center selected boot splash.

However, nice program. I wished distributors could unify the way those splash screens work. - Feb 22 2005
kdesu patch(mockup)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by jrch2k 18 comments

This patch will make kdesu easier to use for beginners, but consider that in almost all cases the user wants to run the desired program as super user. Maybe preselection of the root user will help that.
Another tip is, to keep the ability of manually editing/inserting the users name. This will avoid to switch to the mouse when one is used to work with the keyboard.
Since you have designed a nice side graphic there is no need to remove it, but please don't let it get too huge, it looks oversized then.
Another suggestion of mine for those who like eye candy ist the integration of the kdm login user graphics for user selection. This might bloat the code though.

Please keep on doing what you planned. - Feb 12 2005
