1. As far as I can see, the icons in the bottom buttons still have the same size. In the implementation of IconLoader (which I copied from KDE Plasma 4.8.1) the icon size is set to theme.smallIconSize which I expect to follow the settings in systemsettings. The buttons were never set to be stretching to the menu width. It was just a coincidence that the buttons were wide enough to give that impression. The reason why the implementation of the buttons changed is because someone wanted a single-column setup and in this setup the old buttons were much to wide. I have no motivation to change the implementation of those buttons again. Patches that don't break things and that are maintainable are welcome.
2. Fixed.
3. Thanks. - Apr 01 2012
This is indeed a feature (it helps, of course, that I had to do nothing to have this feature ;-) ). Now there is an option to reset the menu to its original state (and for this I have to do some effort). - Apr 01 2012
Added support for this in version 0.7.5. - Apr 01 2012
No. If you know how to do this in QML, then I would be very happy to learn it. - Mar 27 2012
That is a limitation caused by the fact that arrays of lists cannot be used in bindings in QML (well, it didn't work when I tried), so I have to define a variable for each submenu. In version 0.7.4 the number of nested submenus has increased to 4 (so 5 levels in total). I hope that this is now enough. If not, do yourself a favor and simplify your menu structure. - Mar 27 2012
In version 0.7.x the launcher icon adapts its size to the panel it is in. I haven't tested anymore with 0.6. - Mar 27 2012
The bug concerning adding or removing favorites while in search mode is fixed in version 0.7.3.

For translations, follow the instructions in README_TRANSLATIONS.txt in the plasmoid. No need to follow all instructions, I just need a .po file with your translations and separately the translation of the two strings that are in metadata.desktop. Note however that I didn't manage to get translations actually working. If you know a solution for this problem and tell me, that would make me very happy! - Mar 18 2012
Currently, all "leave" options are available with maximum 2 clicks (the second click only needed to confirm the "destructive" actions, namely logout, turn off computer, ...), so I see no reason to make the buttons configurable. You may be able to convince me (no guarantee) with some convincing use-case. - Mar 18 2012
The lockout plasmoid is written in C++ while my plasmoid is written in QML. I have not found a way to attach tooltips to buttons in QML (any ideas are of course welcome). In version 0.7.3 the buttons automatically lose their text (and thus become narrow) when the plasmoid becomes too narrow (that was not easy to implement and requires to maintain my own hacked version of PlasmaComponents.Button). - Mar 18 2012
1) Patches welcome. I don't have empty menus in my menu. Please make sure that the startup speed of the plasmoid is not badly affected, otherwise the patch will not be applied. The reason of this plasmoid is to have KDE start up faster than when using Lancelot (Kickoff is not usable for me), so a fast startup is more important for me than not seeing empty menus (which I'm not seeing anyway).
2) See answer to FraMari above (follow the instructions in README_TRANSLATIONS.txt in the plasmoid file). Unfortunately the translations don't work on my machine, so if you know how to make them work and tell me, I will be very glad!
3) The plasmoid is designed to not show the same entry twice in the same menu. If the entries are "BlueDevil" and "BlueDevil2", then they will of course both show up as the plasmoid is not smart enough to know that they are the same (the title should be exactly the same otherwise the plasmoid doesn't realize that it should only show one of them). If they are in different submenus the plasmoid will happily show both as it doesn't know which one it would otherwise have to hide.
4) This is outside the scope of this plasmoid. I don't see the use of having this menu fill up the whole screen as it will never show more than what is currently available in the plasmoid (some lightweight additions may still occur, but this is very unlikely).
5) Implemented in version 0.7.3. - Mar 18 2012
In the plasmoid file there is a file README_TRANSLATIONS.txt detailing the instructions for translation. I need a .po file and the translation of the two mentioned strings (these are the strings in metadata.desktop). - Mar 18 2012
The icon changing problem is a bug which is solved in version 0.7.2.

The white text on white search field problem is discussed before on page 3 of this comments section. Basically, the solution is to find a plasma theme which defines a dark background for lineedits or to ask the developer of your theme to add such a background. - Mar 14 2012
1) This cannot be done because ListView insists on catching any drag events itself. If you have any solution for this problem, patches are welcome.
2) What easier management do you have in mind? The *default* width and height cannot be changed (well, actually, they can: by editing contents/ui/main.qml and changing the values for minimumWidth and minimumHeight). Once the plasmoid is added to the panel, its popup size can be modified by dragging the corners. - Mar 14 2012
Implemented in 0.7.2. Not sure you will like the result though as the buttons at the bottom are now squeezed. Any ideas to do this nicer are welcome (not sure they will be implementable though because PlasmaComponents.Button is not the most flexible item in the world). - Mar 14 2012
Thank you for this very helpful comment in which you kindly give information on which system you use the plasmoid, which version of KDE you have, which Plasma theme you use, ... ;-) On my Arch Linux with KDE 4.8.1 and any Plasma theme, my plasmoid works perfectly and does never cause a crash (otherwise I wouldn't publish it here). Note that the plasmoid will not work with KDE versions less than 4.8.0.

It can be closed in several ways: by choosing an application, by pressing the "Escape" key, by clicking the menu button again (the one you clicked to open the menu). If you have a shortcut for this plasmoid, pressing the shortcut again also closes the menu. The plasmoid also closes when losing focus. - Mar 11 2012
Yes, there are several methods (none of them involving me however ;-) ):
1. Use a theme that uses a good color combination for textfields and their texts.
2. Ask the developer of the theme you are using to add a dark background for lineedits (the theme should have a file called "lineedit.svgz" in its widgets directory). Why do dark themes have white lineedits (they hurt my eyes in an otherwise perfectly dark environment)?
3. Copy such a dark "lineedit.svgz" file from another theme (e.g. Produkt http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=124213).
4. In the file called "colors" located in the main directory of your theme, change the value of "ForegroundNormal" in the section "[Colors:Window]" (this will however break the text color for all other widgets).
5. Better than 4: ask the Plasma devs to add a separate variable for defining the text color of lineedits.
6. Hack the file /usr/lib/kde4/imports/org/kde/plasma/components/TextField.qml (do this each time you upgrade KDE) and change the "color" attribute of the TextInput with id "textInput" to "black" (with the quotes) instead of "theme.textColor".
In my humble opinion, choices 1 and 2 are the only good ones. Note that not only my plasmoid, but also for example the "Dictionary" plasmoid, the "Add Widgets" panel and any plasmoid which has a lineedit shows this problem. - Mar 11 2012
Implemented in version 0.7.1. The default is still 2 columns however. Note that in 1-column mode, you can switch between columns (including switching between "Favorites" and the real menu) using the breadcrumb (the line immediately below the search field). - Mar 11 2012
Send me your email address in a private message and I will send you version 0.6 of this plasmoid.

In version 0.7 the implementation has changed dramatically and the plasmoid is now a Plasma/PopupApplet, so the vanishing behavior is the one defined in Plasma for Plasma/PopupApplet. Version 0.6 was implemented by having an icon which showed a PlasmaCore.Dialog when clicked (in that version the popup also disappears, but you can easily change that behavior by removing the line "setAttribute(Qt.WA_X11NetWmWindowTypeMenu, true)" in contents/ui/main.qml). Since this is quite a different implementation than in the current version, switching between the two cannot be done using a simple configuration option.

It would be nice to know in which use-case you need a menu that stays continually open. In version 0.7 the menu remembers where the user was in the menu when it was last open and it even remembers the search if the user was using search. So if the menu vanishes, you only have to reopen it in order to restore it in the exact same state as when it was previously open. - Mar 11 2012
Forgot to say that the icon theme is Buuf Deuce (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Buuf+Deuce+KDE?content=76340) and the font is Aurulent Sans (http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Aurulent-Sans). - Dec 15 2011
I added a margin in 0.5.4. I hope it is large enough. - Oct 23 2011
For clarity, the last but one paragraph is an answer to "How can I sort the favorites?" - Oct 23 2011
Changing the icon size will be implemented in a future version.

As mentioned before, I do not know a way to resize a PlasmaCore.Dialog, so any hints or patches are welcome. I don't know either if a Plasma/PopupApplet (which will be used in KDE 4.8.x instead) is resizable (any hints or patches for that are welcome as well).

On my computer the three buttons are not covered by the panel. I added a little margin, I hope it is enough to solve your problem.

Where is it specified that those items should be hidden? Does the "apps" dataengine know about this setting. If not, then we have again another limitation of Plasma which reduces the usability of this plasmoid (see TODO list above to see the other limitations).

You remove the wrongly ordered items (from the bottom up) and then add them again in the correct order. Sorry. I will add up and down buttons in a future version (I am not sure that ListView supports reordering by dragging, and currently dragging the menus scrolls those menus and I don't want a different behavior only in the Favorites list).

Thank you for liking this plasmoid despite its limitations caused mostly by limitations in Plasma. - Oct 23 2011
Implemented, but the dash cannot be the first character because minus (dash) is used to remove an item from the favorites list. - Oct 23 2011
bug 1) solved in 0.5.4 (you have to set the option in the configuration dialog)
bug 2) this is a known bug caused by the fact that setting the ServiceType of the plasmoid to Plasma/PopupApplet doesn't work in KDE 4.7.x and therefore I have to use a buggy workaround. According to user tittiatcoke Plasma/PopupApplet works in the git version of KDE, so the bug will be solved in KDE 4.8.x (if it doesn't break again meanwhile).
bug 3) I don't know the solution to this one. I am unable to set the focus to the plasmoid (this bug seems to remain in the git version of KDE using Plasma/PopupApplet) and within the plasmoid I am unable to set the focus to the search field because setting the focus of a PlasmaWidgets.LineEdit is not implemented by KDE.
notice 1) implemented (but it is slow because of another limitation of Plasma QML)
notice 2) will be solved in KDE 4.8.x with the advent of a working Plasma/PopupApplet
notice 3) thanks! - Oct 23 2011
Thanks! - Oct 23 2011
Thanks for the suggestion! Implemented in 0.5.3. - Oct 20 2011
The problem is that I don't know how to abort an already running search when a new character is typed and then launch the new search (this is what e.g. Lancelot does). In http://doc.qt.nokia.com/4.7/qml-workerscript.html a threading system in QML is described, but it is so limited that it is useless: calling engine("apps") doesn't work in the WorkerScript.onMessage function and because of the restrictions mentioned in the link it is impossible to pass the dataengine as argument to sendMessage. - Oct 20 2011
Not sure what you mean, but if you mean that you can change the columns just by dragging to the left or the right, then yes, this is on purpose.

The fact that changing the service type to Plasma/PopupApplet doesn't work is a bug, because this feature is described in: http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Plasma/QML/API#Popup_Applet. So you're telling me that the bug still isn't solved in KDE git :-( - Oct 20 2011
I miss that too! If you know how to make PlasmaCore.Dialog resizable in QML, then I would be very very grateful to you. - Oct 20 2011
Fixed in 0.5.2. - Oct 19 2011
1. Yeah, I noticed that problem. Unfortunately I don't know how to solve it. I guess that if setting the service type to Plasma/PopupApplet would work, then this problem would be automatically solved.
2. The menu can be edited by selecting the "Menu Editor" item in the context menu of the launcher button. The plasmoid is designed such that it does not show empty categories. Are you sure that these categories are really empty and do not contain hidden elements? - Oct 18 2011
Hey guys. The plasmoid requires KDE 4.7.0 or higher, because KDE 4.6.x doesn't support PlasmaCore.ToolTip, PlasmaCore.Dialog, plasmoid.setAction and maybe some other stuff neither. - Oct 18 2011
Thanks for the suggestion. It is implemented in v0.5. - Oct 18 2011

In KDE on Linux the system tray icon is not slowing things down. If I comment out the line rsslisting.traySystem->show(), then I see no noticeable difference in startup speed. The system tray icon appears a little bit later than the main window though. Anyway, an option to disable the system tray icon would be nice too. - Mar 28 2012
Thanks for the new version. It is much better now. I discovered another small bug now: if I remove an article by pressing "Delete", the previous article is selected. I expect the next article to be selected.

Unfortunately, you have not removed your slow splash screen. I have added the line

QTime t = QTime::currentTime();

at the start of the main() function in src/main.cpp and the line

qCritical() << t.msecsTo(QTime::currentTime());

before the line "return app.exec()" to see how much the splash screen slows down startup. With the splash screen, the time between these two commands varies between 750 and 850 msecs on my quadcore machine. If I remove anything splash-related in the main() function, then the time varies between 360 and 470 msecs. So roughly 400 msecs (or half the startup time) is wasted on the splash screen. It would therefore be nice to have an option to disable the splash screen. - Mar 26 2012
Some feature requests and bug reports:
- When the article is focused, I still want to be able to go to the next article and delete the current article using the keyboard shortcuts (like in Akregator).
- When I add the Planet Qt feed (http://www.planetqt.org/atom.xml) the title of the article is not a link. However, next to the author's name there is a link "page", but when I click on that link, the page opens in a separate browser although I have configured QuiteRSS to use the embedded browser (the embedded browser works for all other links).
- The items "Open in New Window" and "Save Link..." in the popup menu which appears when I right-click the article's text don't work.
- I want to be able to disable the custom stylesheet (I use KDE and QuiteRSS blends well in my desktop if I remove the corresponding code in main.cpp).
- In the configuration dialog: if I click an item in the left column and then go up or down with the arrow keys, the other items are selected, but the corresponding page on the right side does not appear. For example, I click on "Language", then I press the "Up" arrow key, then "Notifications" is highlighted, but on the right side I still see the "Language" configuration.
- QuiteRSS is very crashy when I enable the embedded browser AND enable plug-ins. When I disable plug-ins, the program does not crash.
- You should distribute the source code in such a way that the tar-ball contains a single directory containing the current contents of your tar-ball. I hate very much having to clean up my home directory from the mess that doing "tar xvf" on your tar-ball has created. Doing "tar xvf" should give me a single directory in which everything else is organized.
- Don't show debug messages when I compile in release mode (i.e. when I add CONFIG -= debug and CONFIG += release to your .pro file). Hint: have a look at http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-4.8/qtglobal.html#qInstallMsgHandler and change the example by adding #ifndef QT_NO_DEBUG and #endif in the correct place.
- Try to avoid using setIconSize(QSize(16,16)) in RSSListing::createFeedsDock() because I want to have the same icon size as in my other applications (for better integration in my desktop). In order to improve the integration in my desktop it would be nice if you could use QIcon::fromTheme() (http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-4.8/qicon.html#fromTheme).
- Why on earth have you added a splash screen??? With this splash screen QuiteRSS takes too much time to start. If I remove the splash screen code from main.cpp, then QuiteRSS starts up so much faster (it appears almost immediately on my screen)!!! Please remove the splash screen! When I click on a program in the menu, I want to use that program right away, I don't want to wait until some animation has finished. I don't have time to waste. I repeat: I have NO time to waste!!! The lesser I have to wait, the better. Applications that take a long time to load are candidates for the trash bin, I replace them with faster programs. The current behavior is simply unacceptable. - Mar 21 2012

I managed yesterday evening to force myself to boot Windows again ;-) The above error is my fault. I corrected the qmake files, so now it should work. - Mar 28 2012
I forgot to say that he is the maintainer of Poppler. Maybe this knowledge will make the discussion more clear to you. - Mar 28 2012
Then I am on the same planet as you because I don't understand the irony either. I gave the example with the electricity to make the absurdity of that argument more obvious. - Mar 27 2012
It seems that the Qt libs cannot be found, which is strange. I assume that Qt is installed correctly on your machine, so qmake should be able to find those libraries. The needed dlls are: QtCore4.dll, QtGui4.dll, QtXml4.dll, mingwm10.dll, libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll (the last two could have a slightly different name or be different files altogether). Normally these dlls should be found automatically by qmake in the Qt installation and this should require no interaction of the person compiling this program.

I will have a look at it the next time I boot into Windows (that can take some time because I do not boot often in Windows, sorry). - Mar 27 2012
The irony is the same as in the case that an inhabitant of a remote village is complaining that he cannot introduce electricity in his home because there is no electricity in his street and the government tells him "Oh the irony of complaining the government doesn't put electricity in your street when you don't build the cables yourself from the power plant to your home". He furthermore seems to be unaware that the ktikz binary for Windows is provided by me, that's how I know it is hard. - Mar 27 2012
Support for synctex is not implemented yet. It is planned, but there is no guarantee that it will be implemented soon, so patches are welcome. - Mar 26 2012
Ah, I see. OK, thanks for informing them. - Mar 21 2012
I added in version 0.7.3 some untested qmake code to compile PdfViewer on Windows. If you install KtikZ for Windows (see link above) and grab the following dlls from the installed directory:
iconv.dll
jpeg62.dll
libfontconfig.dll
libfreetype.dll
liblcms-1.dll
libopenjpeg.dll
libpng12.dll
libpoppler.dll
libpoppler-qt4.dll
libxml2.dll
zlib1.dll
and if you grab the following header files from the poppler source code (the tar-ball can be found at http://poppler.freedesktop.org/):
poppler-annotation.h
poppler-export.h
poppler-link.h
poppler-optcontent.h
poppler-page-transition.h
poppler-qt4.h
and install all these files (both the dlls and the header files) in the win32 directory, then I think that you will be able to compile PdfViewer on Windows (using qmake, not cmake). - Mar 21 2012
Yes, text selection is one of my plans. However, the problem is that currently Poppler only supports obtaining the text in a rectangular selection (of course I want to implement this too), so obtaining a text-based selection (similar like in a text-editor or in a browser) will be hard to implement. If the text is in two-column format, it will be even harder to implement (I don't know how to detect a two-column format). Patches would make me incredibly happy ;-)

As far as I understood, the goal of the Razor-Qt project is to provide only a desktop shell (for example KDE Plasma, Gnome Shell and Unity are desktop shells, in the old days we called that a desktop environment but it seems that people now understand the latter notion as something as huge as the KDE Software Compilation or Gnome), so including this in Razor-Qt makes little sense. Of course, if there exists some Qt based desktop environment that has the same goals like KDE or Gnome, it would be very nice to include this program in it. - Mar 21 2012
This bug has been solved in version 0.3.1. - Mar 21 2012
You have to compile the Poppler library first. Note that the Poppler devs are kind enough to not provide any binaries for Windows (sarcasm), so you have to do one of the following things:
- get the poppler dlls and headers (and the dlls of its dependencies) from somewhere. For example, you can install ktikz for windows from http://www.hackenberger.at/blog/ktikz-editor-for-the-tikz-language/ and get the dlls from there, note that the latter are compiled using MinGW (the ktikz source code contains an INSTALL.Windows text file giving the complete explanation on which dlls and which .h files you need).
- compile Poppler yourself. Instructions can be found at http://laconsigna.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/compiling-poppler-on-windows/. Good luck with that.
When you have the poppler library, then some modifications must be made to the qmake .pro files. When I have time, I will do that myself, otherwise you should have a look at the code for ktikz and try to transpose that to pdfviewer (hint: search for win32 in the .pro and .pri files). Good luck with that too.

If you manage to succeed in all the above (especially if you succeed in compiling poppler yourself), you will fully understand why opensource programmers hate developing for Windows. If miraculously you find the above easy to do, then please be so kind to tell me what on earth you did exactly, I will be so thankful to you. - Mar 21 2012

Hi, I am in the process of testing your app. Here are some suggestions and bug reports:
- If I set the shortcut "PageUp" for "Previous Image" and "PageDown" for "Next Image", both keys don't work.
- Since the following shortcuts are not yet set for any action, I would also suggest setting by default the following: "Up" and "Wheel Up" for "Previous Image", "Down" and "Wheel Down" for "Next Image" (I am used to all these shortcuts from Gwenview).
- I didn't test the "Delete File" action as I am afraid that it will be a hard delete. It would be preferable to have a "Move to Trash" action instead (or both and then set the "Delete" key for the "Move to Trash" function and "Shift+Delete" for the hard delete).
- When I build in "release" mode, then I don't want to see debug messages such as "Updating counter", "Opening Menu", "Drawing image: ...", ... in the terminal in which I run the program. - Mar 26 2012

You mean the sidebar which appears at each plasmoid and which contains the buttons "Resize", "Rotate", "Config" and "Close" (those buttons only have icons, no text)? If so, then you can have those sidebars back by right-clicking on the panel and choosing "Unlock Widgets". Alternatively you can right-click on the desktop itself and select that option, or you can left-click on the activity label at the top right of your desktop (which has the name of the current activity, by default "Desktop" or something like that) and select that option. - Mar 11 2012
