I just think that totalitarian political systems like fascism or communism can bring out the worst in any people.
Also, I don't think that this wallpaper has much to do with history. The 'viva la revolucion' tagline & the hammer & sickle coupled with a linux logo seem to be looking toward the future rather than the past.
But hey, this site is supposed to be about artwork, not politics.
By the way, I like backround image you uploaded.

But I note with a certain amount of pride that the nazi wallpaper is being voted downward into oblivion just like this one is. I'm glad to see these symbols of oppressive totalitarian regimes treated with the contempt that they deserve.
As an aside, I think that censorship is the wrong approach. I think that the solution to speech that we don't like is more free speech. We can shout them down. - Aug 10 2009

I think the copyright notice on this work is wrong; I think it is in the public domain. - Jun 19 2009

I think that there is a good opportunity to be had with classical art and open source software. The copyright on this stuff (if it was ever claimed) has long since expired, and its open to reuse and reinterpretation in software form.

Note: I think the author struck a good balance with with regard to the preview.
Breasts are censored in the online preview version which is fair enough because a lot of people with a wide variety of tastes use this site.
Breasts are revealed in the full version because it is a safe assumption that if you bother to download this, you don't mind looking at naked women.
Suggestion: Change it so that the preview within the login window manager shows breasts after download. Currently, this uses the same censored preview that is shown online. People have to download it to see this preview, so I think this maintains the same sense of balance. - Jan 15 2009

On a side note, I've noted that grub boot splash images routinely get voted low. Why?
I'm guessing that people who do not use grub splash images are looking at the screenshot and noticing that they are all pixelated and grainy, and vote low based on that.
To those who don't know, there are severe restrictions for a grub boot splash image. They are limited to a very low resolution (640 x 480) and very low color depth (only 14 colors!).
Grub boot splash images are very nice for any machine that dual boots. Furthermore, there are fewer of them on this forum than almost any other content type. Do they look worse on their own merits than a nicely done background image? No question. But consider the constraints under which these grub splash images are made and give them the credit they deserve.

Unfortunately, layered images tend to have a large memory footprint and I think there is a pretty strict file size limit on what you can upload to gnome-look. The only way I can think of to do what you suggest is to host the layered image on an external website and link to it from here.

The only things I though were missing were a grub bootsplash image & a sound to play on gdm boot up (before log in).

Also, did you guys attempt an XP makeover for Ubuntu to appeal to ordinary users that were happy with XP but were forced into a migration when the bought a new computer that had Vista preinstalled? - Feb 15 2008

I'm just commenting. I haven't voted your work down. Maybe there are a lot of people out there that disagree with me and prefer the vista look. - Feb 14 2008

We'll, you're free not to put it on your computer. You're free to try to come up with a search querey to return only things that you like so that you don't offend yourself when you're browsing. You're free to go to some other site. You're free to start your own stite. Personally, I find your desire for censorship a lot more disturbing that a little gutter humor.
I, for one, liked it. It made me laugh. I voted for it. I downloaded it. And I put it on my computer.
