Old Time Splash Screen

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by joelsonoda 9 comments

This was mostly just an experiment for me to get used to doing some standard stuff on GIMP, but if people like this I might try to improve on it a bit more. I have begun work on an "old time" IceWM theme, and I cannot imagine that it would be too much effort to make some sort of wallpaper and color scheme to accompany. I have no idea how to make themes, thought. - Apr 08 2002

^^ Smiley is up there

I agree with Mr. Worlf in that all good art is non-original. All of the greatest art in this world is an attempt at portraying a part of reality, not venturing into uncharted visual space (which is, I am sure, not what the honorable Zwobits intended). There is also a certain ammount of tallent required to applying the correct filters to do a digi-manipulation, so you needn't be defensive about that. - Apr 03 2002

I don't claim to be an artist, nor do I claim that your wallpaper is out of date or anything like that. Saying that something would be popular in the 70s does not make it unstylish or out of date (that's why I put little smiley). It doesn't look at all like art from the 70s because they didn't do any computer rendered stuff back then, but the colors are very retro (you like this word better?). - Apr 03 2002

If only KDE were around in the 70's, I'm certain that this wallpaper would have made it onto many, many desktops. - Apr 02 2002

Ice-WM Themes by joelsonoda 2 comments

Does anyone know how to change the title text color on the IceWM themes. For some reason it's white, and that doesn't show up as well on the yellow bar. Thanks! - Apr 01 2002

Satisfies my yellow/black moods. Unlike most of my yellow black uploads, this is actually more classy than loud. - Apr 01 2002

I've been doing yellow and black stuff lately. This would go perfectly with the yellow and black replacements I'm trying to make for KDE. I already made a wallpaper and splash that was done in much the same colors, and I'm working on an IceWM and color scheme. Yellow and black rules! - Apr 01 2002

I think that they should add another option up above, currently [good] [bad], so that it reads [good][bad][ugly] (get it?). Anyhow, I'd like to make a color scheme and an IceWM to go with the background and splash screen. No, I don't usually like colors like that, but we all have our different moods. This was more of an experiment/practice. - Mar 31 2002

In my untrained opinion, perhaps yellow is not the most practical of colors, but that in no way means that we shouldn't use it. Also, black goes with yellow! Those are two of the most commonly combined colors. Just look at all of the US school busses (c.f. police "caution" tape). I'd say, "Stick with yellow. Be loud. Be different." - Mar 31 2002

Thank you also for the helpful advice on the iceWM themes. I would like to make a color scheme, wallpaper and IceWM with the same bold flavor as the nuclear splash. - Mar 30 2002

Well, might I be the first to comment on your wallpaper. I think it looks rather classy. I've been in a yellow and black mood lately (see my splash), so this fits rather nicely. Have you considered some sort of augmentation on the edges of this wallpaper (border). - Mar 30 2002

Well, it's also easier to get more people to download your screenshot if you don't have screenshots displayed, but for convenience, it would be nice if you would also have a thumbnail. - Mar 30 2002

I know there has to be something better I can do with this splash. I know, the colors are very loud, but sometimes we can all be in very "loud" sorts of moods can we not? Since everything on here is done on different vector layers, it's really easy for me to change anything. I also have the pre-filtered images too, so I could use different filters (I was thinking about killing the bevel on the fallout symbol or using some other 3D effect for the KDE text). Just let me know~ - Mar 30 2002

So, we're the creators of loud content in this little community, the ones who stray from convention and throw the standard, cautious bounds of style to the wind and with abandon venture into somewhat uncharted territory. Fun stuff! - Mar 30 2002

The cogs in this image have been drawn from an image made by a photographer who says that his photos are free for personal and commercial use. I could do another loud splash with just the corner of the fallout symbol, but I'll leave this one too because I like the cogs.

Thanks for your input! - Mar 30 2002

Well, I can guarantee that you won't find these icons anywhere since they are my creations. I did use two photos, but you wouldn't recognize anything. You certainly might not like the splash screen, but if anyone is interested in using these little images for their splashes or anything else, just let me know. - Mar 30 2002

Well, MSIE might not work becuase sometimes it just refuses to load high-resolution images (althought I've downloaded them from Hebus before). I would get the images to load but be unable to download them with Konq since they use some funky cgi program to loag the images. I've found the greatest success with the latest build of Mozilla (9.9). - Mar 27 2002

Oh, by the way, if anyone actually likes this it might interest them to know that I originally made the images in subtle shades of blue and dark purple. Those just didn't look "old time" enough, but if you don't think that the image is stupid and cluttered, I can post the colored version too. - Mar 27 2002

I get the nice desktop wallpapers from the french version of hebus.com (the English version is currently offline and the French version has more pictures I like). Don't worry if you don't know French because you should be able to figure out what the English equivalent is without much difficulty. I don't know French and I get most of my wallpapers from there. - Mar 27 2002

If I'm the only one who ever comments on this, I'll still be happy. My tastes in GUI constantly shift, so by the time you've seen this I've probably changed my desktop already, but hey. If any of you have trouble installing this stuff for FreeBSD then know you're not alone!

Anyhow, I probably have a desktop using a DigitalBlasphemy wallpaper by now, a shift from natural to the fantastical/technical. - Mar 26 2002
