i used easy_install as is advised in the instructions after dropping pyrad.py in /usr/local/bin.

i'll investigate this more thoroughly soon and advise, but your sample script created a window perfectly without generating any outbound connections.

p.s. your comment about the 88.* ip may indicate some other activity which i'm not aware of, but in a weeks time there were exactly 3 outbound connections made by python, one i'm sure was during the easy_install and i'll research the others. - Nov 29 2010
i don't find your explanation plausible in any way.

first, this applet phones home every time you start it to:

207.223.240.181 or 88.198.69.151

therefore "setuptools" is not the culprit for initiating a outbound connection.

as i mentioned before, the file ssl.pyc was fetched during the install of pyRad and maybe it's necessary just to use easy_install, but i can't imagine why pyRad would need ssl capabilities. i don't dabble in python-world, but things have to make sense.

So, my feeling as to the merit of your applet diminished completely... IF it is necessary for this code to phone home, it should be spelled out in the information you give with the download... otherwise it's just malware.

during the setup/install there is a connection made to 207.223.240.181 (bitbucket?) and it appears a file "ssl.pyc) is fetched and installed in /usr/lib/python2.6.

Why is this necessary and to what purpose?

this is not described in any information accompanying the package. - Nov 22 2010

unique and i'd request that if you have the time to bundle that desktop into one package for easy distribution. Be nice to have an easy adjustment on the window background transparency since the bleed thru from covered objects can be distracting.

well done. - Jul 23 2010

i'm sure there was a lot of time spent tweaking this and it shows a lot of talent.

Very well done indeed. - Jun 23 2010

two items:

if the update time is changed, the up/down rate is incorrect.

and, if you remove the border and menu bar to get just a graph display, the menu bar is not recoverable with Ctl+M..?

nice little tool, keep up the good work. - Dec 12 2009

tried this out after my usual Crystal windeco seemed stale, and i have a one problem and a couple suggestions:

the problem: some artifacts on the two upper rounded corners (11.2/KDE 4.3.2).

like to see: rounded corners on the bottom also and thinner frames.

great effort, the pattern in the titlebar is a nice touch. Hope you have time to add to the project. - Nov 02 2009

when adding volumes to the disk catalog, I get an error:

[21] Out of bounds.
FMain.?.0

the application closes immediately after the error msg is acknowledged. Restarting the application shows the volume was added to the catalog successfully.

suggestions? - Jun 28 2009

i use the standard cli "find" utilities instead of kfind because it's simply too slow. i hope your widget proves to be as effective. Perhaps if you incorporated the ability to use the various "x"locate databases if they exist your improvement would use less resources? - Mar 09 2009
