We've recently added support for Gtk3.10, so Greybird is certainly "future-proof".
Another thing worth mentioning is the tool gtk-theme-config, which will be included by default in Xubuntu from 13.10 onwards (you can install it in earlier versions too by adding the Shimmer PPA).
With this tool you can easily change the highlight-color of e.g. Greybird (but also all other themes) with a simple UI. - Sep 30 2013

any clue why that is? (i redownloaded it a couple of times to be sure it wasn't a corrupt download) - Jan 19 2012

the theme in the screenshots is "Greybird" (default theme of Xubuntu). you can fetch the latest version from my github repo: https://github.com/shimmerproject/Greybird - Jan 08 2012

so all users of other - non-ubuntu based - distros will be left out in the cold at the moment.
i apologize for that, feel free to use version 0.2.1 (still available via github) which uses the more widespread adwaita engine and should also work e.g. in fedora.
i'm only hoping unico will soon be as widespread as murrine... - Aug 27 2011

about the faenza-folders: i do take your request seriously (even more so now that there are already two) - meaning: it's on my list - but i don't know when i'll get around to that. supporting gtk3 with greybird has kept (and will keep) me busy for a while. - Jul 19 2011

there was a discussion about shipping greybird or albatross in xfce by default, but there were understandable doubts about the murrine-engine dependency. i'll probably try to do either a port of greybird to the xfce-gtk-engine or just a new theme (at least if the xfce-devs are in for it).
the situation with the icon-theme is similar, i think they are already quite challenged with the codebase they have to maintain (and develop) and every extra package feels like a ton of bricks.
so all in all i assume it'll be up to distros/packagers how xfce looks by default. - Jul 18 2011

thanks for all the praise - it's nice to know that some people appreciate what we do :)
with respect to the faenza plans: yes, there was/is such a plan, i'm not 100% sure about when i'd have time and get around to doing that as there are 100 other things on my todo-list that are more important at the moment (mostly Greybird-stuff).
if you feel like helping out with any of our stuff feel free to check in at #shimmer on irc.freenode.org anytime ;) - Jul 18 2011

after following the same procedure with faenza-xfce you can select the icon theme in xfce4-settings-manager > appearance > icons.
that's it. - Jul 12 2011

thanks for the comment, i'll add a link to faenza and faenza-cupertino. - Jun 22 2011
as the author of the theme i'd like to say that this is still a work in progress, especially the gtk3 theme is experimental.
in case you won't sync this upload in the future, people who want the latest version of greybird can always grab it in our git repository: https://github.com/shimmerproject/Greybird
other than that enjoy the theme :)
thanks,

as one of the authors of bluebird i guess i should feel flattered that you decided to re-use it.
just to set one thing straight: the panel in the original bluebird is *dark blue*, not black.
one more thing that would be nice if you could add a link to the original source, i.e. http://shimmerproject.org/projects/bluebird or https://github.com/shimmerproject/Bluebird - Mar 31 2011

i'm having trouble with synaptic's toolbar, so in case you have a fix for that in your theme it would be great if you could point me there. (i looked through gtkrc and Apps/ but couldn't find anything synaptic-specific.)
thanks in advance! - Jan 15 2011

btw, if i might give you a hint for one place that is seldomly polished in xfce-themes: the app-switcher (alt+tab).
you can try it with the following code:
style "tabwin" = "default"
{
bg[NORMAL] = "#222222"
bg_pixmap[NORMAL] = "app_switcher.png"
fg[NORMAL] = "#FFFFFF"
bg[SELECTED] = "#6C8085"
fg[SELECTED] = "#ffffff"
# bg[INSENSITIVE] = "#ff0000"
# fg[INSENSITIVE] = "#0000ff"
}
widget "xfwm4-tabwin*" style "tabwin"
btw, for my eyes some of the contrasts are too harsh (like the blue on black when marking a file in thunar) and the menu is also not as color-balanced as in nooto. - May 01 2009

i just wanted to complement you on your excellent port of nooto. this is such an elegant theme.
also very kind of you to include the panel.rc! (even though i would prefer the panel to use the aurora theme as well, i'm not really a fan of mixing engines)
so thanks for all the great ports you've delivered over time here.
and one more note: now that xfce 4.6 is out and xfwm4 has the additional prelight-feature so it would be great if you would include those in your theme/s. (basically it works like the rest of the button states, so e.g. "close-prelight.png" would be one...)
that's it for now,
ochosi

your theme has great looks, the smoothness suggest this is very usable on a daily basis.
anyways, since i don't use the global menu and read that i have tweak a few things to make this theme acceptable, i wanted to ask whether you would release a second version without the global-menu stuff inside? i really don't have so much experience and wouldn't like to sniff around in your gtkrc for "tweaks".
in return i could offer to port your emerald theme to xfwm4. - Mar 16 2009

just wanted to say i always liked this theme and just recently intended to switch to it, but then realized again that it's buggy with the xfce-panel (the panel background color isn't applied to quite a few items like cpu-graph and orage). otherwise everything seems to be fine.
maybe if you could have a look into themes that use murrine-svn too and don't show this behavior(like Murrine Glow)?
btw, same problem with MurrinaTriompheSVN which i also like quite a lot... - Nov 21 2008

good work! will you provide an emerald or an xfwm4 theme (or best: both) with this? - Oct 27 2008

there are basically just two things i'd like to comment on (don't know, maybe this has been mentioned before):
a) i've seen you've already started doing some symbolic-links so that your icon-theme mostly works with xfce. if you plan on continuing that, that's great news (obviously i'm a xfce-user and i'm loving it) and you should also consider publishing your theme on xfce-look.
b) an alternative to gnome's standard-icons for the networkmanager would be great. since it is standard both in ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 many people will see it in their panel all the time, so i guess it's a place to add some polish (btw i very much like your icons for gnome-power-manager).
that's it with my comments - keep up the good work: this is really one of the best icon themes around. - Oct 07 2008

thanks for commenting. at the moment i'm doing some tweaking on the theme and i'll post it sometime soon.
anyways, concerning your question: i somehow like the thin window-borders. in xfce (if you didn't change the standard setting) the shortcut for resizing the window should be alt+shift+cursorbutton.
hope that helps. i'm also thinking of reworking this version so that it even looks good without the compositor, then i might also make a thicker window-border. - Jul 29 2008
