I had to change the Makefile by hand to 'KDELIBS= ${KDEDIR}/lib64' for it to work. Please take 64bit systems into account for the next release. - May 17 2005

I haven't thought of this, as I do not know the KDE API (yet). Could be possible. I would try asking on a kdelibs mailing list if this is possible.
> One possibility would be use numbers padded with zeros
I would only use that as a last option. What would IMO be better:
- Place the result numbers after the folder name; you already added them somehow, so I assume you can influence the position.
- Taking the icon idea a step further would be to use icon colors to reflect the number of results; e.g. a red folder icon for more than 50 results, a yellow one for more than 10 and a green one for less than 10. In this case, I think people could live without the sorting, as there are better visual cues.
> color the part of a filename
I don't know this either (see above).
Something else I just realized: Why are the results from /bin/ not inside a folder in the screenshot? What is the criterion that decides whether a file goes into a folder or is displayed directly? - Apr 07 2005

- use a different folder icon than the standard one for collapsed folders to avoid confusion between real folders and collapsed folders; with 'real folders' I mean those whose name was matched in the expression, thus making the folder itself a search result
- sort collapsed folders according to their number of hits; I know this conflicts with the name sorting which is active in the screenshot, but on the other hand the name of a collapsed folder is not of importance in this situation, so there is no need to use it for sorting => the results are more important
General suggestion:
- color the part of a filename that matched the expression in a different color; make sure to use a standard KDE color and not a custom one, as it needs to fit with whatever color scheme the user has active - Apr 05 2005

I don't think the horizontal bar is too well placed in the second image, but overall it's still a good design. - Mar 07 2005

Also rounded icon-text background is nice.
And not to forget the shading of the selection area.
All in all, great! - Oct 27 2004

The arrow colors (hue) don't match that of the rest of the icons. You should try to find better matches.
And the blue of the folders is a bit too intensive (saturation). - Aug 29 2004

Maybe you should try changing the brightness of the arrows to be more like that of the paper clip, then it will make a more "polished" and light impression. - Aug 29 2004

One thing though: The arrows pointing outwards; I've only been able to identify them after thinking about the shapes for several seconds. You should maybe try to find a better ratio of the baseside of the triangle compared to the maximum length of the arc that the triangle could occupy. IMO the best one is the arrow belonging to the top blue bar on the left side on the outermost circle. - Jul 27 2004
The WinDec files seem to be in place:
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kwin_plastik.la
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kwin_plastik.so
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kwin_plastik_config.la
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kwin_plastik_config.so
I really have no idea what is going on. Have tried pretty much everything, recompiling, reinstalling, relogin, ...
This is on KDE 3.1.3 with QT 3.1.2. - Sep 20 2003

Is there a way to determine what part of a window is hidden through the KDE API? Then you would 'just' not render in that area. - Feb 22 2003

But as far as I can tell from the screenshots, you are using a horizontal and vertical blur on the shadow effect. That's why the diagonals on the shadow do not appear on the edges. Maybe try using a gaussian blur or so on the effect (well, depending on how much it affects speed).
Thanks anyway! - Feb 20 2003

It looks like a bit of white added on top of some blue, and not like light reflecting on a glass surface. It would be really white and not just lighter in those parts. Also the reflection on glass usally doesn't fade that much. It has pretty sharp edges. - Jul 26 2002

The first screenshot is imo better. In the second, the "split" sliders don't appeal to me too much.
If you could go for a style similiar to this it would be great:
