Language Flags for Faenza Dark Panel

The solution is just to make more flags with some visible differentiation for different sub-layouts. I'm swamped with work these days and haven't gotten to it (I too use two variants of US on a regular basis), so if anyone else wants to make some and send them to me I'll happily include them in the package. It might work just to use "US" for the default layout and then add * or a subscript/superscript 2 after the US for all of the other layouts (since I suspect most of us are switching between default and one sub-layout). - Apr 08 2011

I love these themes, but the link now seems to be a dead-end. Is there somewhere we can still get them? I re-installed Ubuntu and want to use them again. - Mar 10 2011

I'm glad you like them. How would I go about opening a blueprint in launchpad? I checked out the site and I see that I can "register a project." Is that the place to start? - Dec 03 2010

Yes, it took me a while to get a full list of the language codes used in the notifier, so in my first two flag sets there are some missing. I'm planning to fill those sets out asap, but life has a way of getting in the way :) - Dec 03 2010

Just move all of the images from either ~/.icons/flags/ubuntu-mono-dark-flags or from ~/.icons/flags/ubuntu-mono-flags-light up to the parent folder ~/.icons/flags

The problem here is that gnome doesn't distinguish icon themes for flags. So it won't look at any sub-folders in your ~/.icons/flags folder. It just uses the images it finds there. This means that if you change flag styles you need to manually copy the new flag images to the same folder: ~/.icons/flags

Hope that helps! - Dec 03 2010

Hmmm . . . Where are you putting the flag images? They should be in ~/.icons/flags (as in the instructions above). Don't leave them in the folder that you decompress. - Dec 02 2010

Thanks, this is a good start. In the first (glossy) version, I'd suggest changing the way the highlight hits the beveled edges. It doesn't look realistic and ends up making the icon distracting. Also, in the Faenza set in general the light doesn't come from the upper-right, but from the centre-top. In the second (flat) icon the corner radius on the inside border doesn't seem to be the same as on the outside border. I'd also add some shading to the bevel. But thanks for getting started on this! - Nov 14 2010

I've just uploaded another flag set (this time for ubuntu-mono-light) that should cover Persian. When I get a few minutes I'll update this set too, but I want to change the style a bit in the process. You can get the ubuntu-mono-light version at the new link above. - Nov 04 2010

Sorry. I've finally found the right list of layout abbreviations. I've fixed the filename for Arabic so that it should show up now. I'll look into Persian and get that fixed soon. - Oct 25 2010

Oops! Someone pointed out a typo in my installation instructions. The flag images should be in ~/.icons/flags not in ~/.fonts/flags. My mistake. If you move the flags to the proper directory they should show up no problem. - Oct 25 2010

Did you try logging out and then logging back in? Oddly I find this is necessary on my i386 laptop but not on my AMD64 desktop. - Oct 23 2010

The friendly people at askubuntu.com pointed me the right direction and I've been able to add a flag for the Latin American layout. I gave it the text LA, although this isn't a formal language code. Enjoy! - Oct 22 2010
I see what you mean about the size. If you check out the new dark-panel version you'll see that I've reduced the height on those. - Oct 22 2010

I'm happy to add a flag for the Latin American Spanish keyboard, but I'm also having trouble figuring out what the code is for it. I've put out some feelers so we'll see whether someone else knows! - Oct 21 2010
Done. Ukranian is also included in the dark-panel version I just uploaded. - Oct 21 2010

Nice job. It's great to see a look that is well designed but doesn't come off like a tweak of OSX or Windows. - Oct 17 2010
Sure. What are the two-letter short forms for Arabic and Turkish? AR and TU? - Oct 17 2010
I was thinking about doing some for dark panels, so your comment gives me another nudge. I'll see if I can get the time soon. - Oct 16 2010

To answer your question, yes I think it meets a need. The stock light theme on Ubuntu 10.04 is nice but blocky ("heavy") and needs refinement. This is a great adaptation. Thanks. - Aug 16 2010

Thanks for this fantastic program! My one disappointment right now is that it doesn't seem to support SVG images. So I can't import icons from schemes like Allgrey or Humanity. Is this something you could expand?

Thanks again for the great script! - Jan 29 2010

I've done what you indicate in the instructions, but I don't see the flags anywhere. I do have the keyboard layout widget enabled in my gnome panel. Is that where it should show up? I'm still just seeing the plain text indicator.

Thanks. - Jan 26 2010

Thanks for the quick response. Changing the gtkrc did fix the freezing menus. I'm still having trouble, though, with the panel size. I understand how to resize the panel background image. The problem is that I want to make the panel height smaller and for some reason I can't when this theme is enabled. When I open the "options" dialogue for the gnome panel I just can't reduce the height from 26px. The down arrow is greyed out and unresponsive. Is a minimum height specified somewhere in the gtkrc or something? - Jan 26 2010

This looks very elegant. Would you consider making another version with a bit more accent colour (especially in things like the progress bars and selected items)? - Jan 25 2010

Hi. Great theme. One of the few that's really elegant.

Just 2 problems. First, the theme keeps freezing up my whole UI when I open a menu in the main Ubuntu menu.

Second, the background for the top gnome panel looks messed up. The main background image is several pixels too short for the bar, but the theme prevents me from reducing the hight. The height behind some panel widgets (the Ubuntu menu and the user switcher/logout widget) is better, but I still get a white line across the bottom.

These problems don't seem to be just my machine because I've had them on three different machines now. My setup is:

Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 (although also happens on 386)
Quad-core with 8G memory (so shouldn't be a resources problem)
GeForce 7900 512M
newest Murrine and Aurora engines from PPA

Thanks for any help. I want to use this great theme! - Jan 25 2010

Nice, simple clean theme. I like the bright colours and the green/beige scheme rather than the grey-based scheme that forms the basis of so many bright themes. - Dec 20 2008
AluChrystal theme

I can install this theme just fine on my Intrepid install, but when I run emerald from the command line I get this set of errors:

/home/ian/.themes/AluChrystalGTKTheme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:465: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "Buttons/button-default.png"
/home/ian/.themes/AluChrystalGTKTheme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:470: Background image options specified without filename

/home/ian/.themes/AluChrystalGTKTheme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:1908: Background image options specified without filename

The theme is enabled, but as soon as I close the terminal with the error message all of the emerald supplied pieces of the window decoration disappear (they don't revert to something else--they're just gone!). Is something missing here? Or am I misunderstanding something? I've never used emerald before.

Thanks - Nov 18 2008
