Boy it's a good thing it's on gnome-look then. Nice attitude of "I don't care" when a user points out a quibble with your work. - May 08 2008
Entis Cursors

Cursors by zhorak 30 comments

I like this theme, but there is NO WAY to run that damn make.sh thing. I can't double click on it, and there is no command to make it happen. make.sh, ./make.sh, sudo ./make.sh, NOTHING.

Sure, I can just copy the folder, but then I'm missing half the goddamn cursors (such as EVERY one for resizing a window). Great. Nice. Way to make things more complicated than a simple "put the folder in there" that every other cursor set managed to figure out.

Voted "bad" just for dumb-as-shit installation method. - May 08 2008

What's so different between this and Slickness. It looks like Slickness with a slightly transparent metacity and the theme overall being less dark grey. - May 04 2008

I disagree. Look around on GNOME-look and there are oodles of colorful themes. There aren't nearly enough for us fans of the monochrome outside of taking Aurora or Clearlooks and just changing the colors. Few are MADE to be black and white.

This one I'm not so big on, at least not yet, but it seems to blend with the Titanium icons better than the others. - May 02 2008

I say a star system would be better. I think a lot of GREAT themes get buried because they get a "bad" vote or two and end up with a rating around 60% and then before it can hang around long enough to gather some more votes it's on the last page. - May 02 2008

Titanium. It's a good theme so far, but it's far from complete. Plus, frankly, it's a little hard to look at after a while. It's all stylistically similar, but at the same time really out there.

Cannot wait to see the final product, however. It's almost Titanium and TechniX were made for each other. - May 02 2008

I'm on a notebook and it is pretty darn bright at the moment with the brightness up at normal setting. Under that, though, and text gets tricky to read.

Look at TechniX just for an idea of how "gray" something can be and still perfectly readable. Azel is an excellent theme, but it's kinda bright white and makes for difficult eyestrain when staring for too long. - Apr 30 2008

By the by, I say that as a "beef" but at the same time would prefer it not go "fixed" because, unlike my prior comment about Slickness and its file-menu-bar/window-decorator interaction issues, this one really, really works seamlessly with the packaged Metacity and it has that cool "sunken" look.

I mention that beef only out of a general "hey, I can't really customize this much" feeling, not out of actually disliking it. - Apr 29 2008

GTK2 Themes by TheRob 74 comments

He's got a point, though.

Voting something up without a comment is fine. It says "hey, I like it as it is, keep it up!" But when you vote something down without a comment, it's basically saying "I see a problem with this, but I'm not going to help you fix it so I will like it in the future."

For example, I voted it up, but I have this beef: the way the menu bar is, if you use a "blended" type Metacity, it looks very bizarre. But I'm using the default so that doesn't bother me TOO much.

By the way, Rob, I think this is your best. Remember how I kept bitching about the Metacity on Slickness, how it looked weird if something lacked a File/Edit/Etc bar? Well that's all fixed here! AWESOME. This one pulled me back to a monochrome desktop. - Apr 29 2008

Like I'm wrong? You have FOUR THEMES on the front page for "highest rated".

If the GNOME people were smart, they'd hire you PRONTO for these designs and future ones. TechniX, in my eyes, looks like it should be default on quite a few distros. - Apr 24 2008

Dude, you have to be the #1 theme maker on this site. The two Slickness variants and Overglossed are ALL on the first page for GTK themes under "highest rated" and this one's going to be coming up close behind.

I like this one a lot, too. Might even switch over... - Apr 22 2008

Please don't do that. There's enough Mac clones out here (Aurora Steel just shot itself in the foot by doing that), make this your OWN theme. It's already off to a good start, don't muck it up by replicating someone else. - Apr 09 2008

That's what I mean. The thing that makes it only 99.5% right instead of 100% is also what gives the theme its unique charm. A bother to a small degree, but not enough so that I'd want you to change that.

After all, it just looks so damn cool when put together! - Mar 18 2008

Well, I'm back on this one instead of the black version (on battery a lot, can't see when it's all black). Probably the ONLY white-based monochrome theme that doesn't look like total ass. LOVE the buttons and scrollbars.

Of course, I still have to deal with the slight issue of the emerald theme not really mixing with any windows that have no menu bar (Sonata, firefox with the proper extension), but it's a minor thing and frankly I can't see how that could be "fixed" since most of the time it looks so dynamite. - Mar 17 2008

I feel like I'm collaborating on this one, despite not actually doing any work, lol.

Anyway, I think it's pretty much nailed at this point. It's got everything I want in an emerald theme, kinda reminding me of Neutronium Deepblack in aesthetics but with visible buttons.

Again, fantastic theme. Anyone with an extremely dark theme needs to check this out.

I'm puttering with the transparent one because it looks dang neat, especially when moving windows around. - Mar 05 2008

Beautiful now. I'm using it and loving it. Great work.

A possible second idea (just one to mull over, take it or leave it): have the buttons hide on windows not in focus, sort of like how Darklight has the X button red on the focused window, but grey on all the rest.

Of course, I have no idea how hard that is to make happen in Emerald, maybe it's too much of a PITA to make work.

I don't like the white on two sides but not on the other two. It's a little unbalanced. That's my only real critique of this. Otherwise it's great. Readable, nice look at the titlebar, monochrome but still clear buttons. - Mar 02 2008

It's too fat. On the non-transparent one, if you'd really trim it down and make it supremely compact this could be the best theme I've seen. I love the buttons and the look of it, but it's just too dang BIG. - Mar 02 2008

That's VERY nice.

One of my reservations was that this theme package looked "flat", but the transparency goes a long way in aiding that.

Maybe work on a gradient for it to give it a three-dimensional look? Look at the Darklight emerald theme for a good example. - Feb 25 2008

Or, maybe, the lesson is not to use something until you're familiar with it.

For example, Person A is not familiar with bzr but has a bunch of commands. Attempts to run them and screws something up.

Person B is not familiar with bzr but has a bunch of commands. Reads up on bzr, how it works and how to use it, THEN runs the commands and it works.

Ya dig? It's good advice: if you're unfamiliar with what a command does, don't run it. - Feb 22 2008

My only thing, and maybe you could fix it in the next version (it's minor but I think would make a huge difference): round the corners of the buttons. Just a little bit. I don't mean the near ovals in OSX-type themes, but I think softer edges go a long way in making a theme "smooth".

By the way, you have the only Beryl theme that hides the buttons and still works. Awesome work. However, I seem to get a vertical line in mine roughly halfway across. Like it "breaks" or something. - Feb 03 2008

You know, I have the goofiest problem with AWN Curves: every time I use it, my rightmost icon is hopped up about a half inch any time the bar expands/contracts, and doesn't go down again until I mouse over it.

As small of an issue as that sounds, it's currently enough to keep me from using it. :P - Jan 22 2008
Slickness Black

GTK2 Themes by TheRob 231 comments

Definitely an interesting idea.

I hate to sound like a brown-noser, but honestly I'm not sure what I'd be wanting in the next theme. This one nails my needs so much that I can't think what would be an improvement, at least such a vast change that would happen in the form of a whole new theme.

By way of illustration, I have here a screenshot of this paired with its Emerald theme (and by the by I agree it works best with the swoop), along with Black and White 2 Gloss for the icons, with an AWN bar, Cairo Clock's SimpleClock theme, and a similarly black and white type wallpaper. I use the Obsidian cursor but that doesn't show up in a screenshot.

http://img341.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot28ie3.png

The unity of it all is just phenomenal and is exactly what I've been searching for. I'd been using an OSX ripoff because, while I much prefer dark themes, it's the unity that I need or else I start to go crazy. - Jan 22 2008

GTK2 Themes by TheRob 231 comments

It wouldn't be an issue, except the upper-right of the windows has this light/dark swoop thing going that looks like it "leads" to the title bar. Without that, it seems mismatched.

Now, me, I like being able to choose my border because some (ahem... DarkerIce...) look REALLY bad without the matching Emerald/Metacity theme, but I also don't want it because I really, really like the Emerald themes.

I guess what I'm saying is, consider doing something else so there isn't that swoop thingy. If you look it over and decide it looks best with it, keep it, but it's something to think about.

Also, I want to know who's down-voting this. No offense to some themes (Blue Junior, Darker Theme) but this thing's the best dark theme on the site and I don't get how it's getting knocked down. - Jan 21 2008

Maybe this got mentioned, but in Firefox (Swiftweasel, strictly speaking), the URL text is very very dark gray on the black background.

Other than that, DYNAMITE. By the way for anyone reading this, if you change the "input box" color to a muted gray and the "selected" color to a pastel blue, the theme becomes so easy on the eyes even with all the lights in the room off it's fantastic.

Also kudos for having the ONLY dark theme that doesn't totally botch Pidgin. - Jan 16 2008
