I was absolutely sure that I made a mistake of this kind, since I have not much of an idea how all this works.

1. Question:
Sorry, I forgot to mention that you need to install acpi as well. For Ubuntu it's just

sudo apt-get install acpi

If you don't want to have acpi running, edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst and add

ACPI=off

to the end of the line of the kernel you want to boot.

2. Question:
Not easy to answer without screenshot. Is it a square? Check if you have a "space" or "Tab" at the end of the line. (" ") If you can't solve it, you are very welcome to the Ubuntu Forum :) Click the link above and post screenshot, .conkyrc and scripts. You will get help there from Bruce, Crinos512 or t-mo_ (me).
