It works well on SUSE 9.1, SUSE 10 and SLED 10.

The utilities dvdauthorwidget, konvenientSuse, kmpg2 do not use the changeWidgetText function as they do not need it. You cannot display file contents without these function, and you cannot edit your package descrition file.

The changeWidgetText function appeared in an early state of Kommander, it must be present in all of the Linux disros.

Do not vote me, but NOVELL! It is due to a patch from NOVELL on KDE, it is a KDE bug specific to SUSE 10.1.

Do you have Suse 10.1 x64 ?

The problem with SUSE is general.
I have SUSE SLED 10. I had to replace a function for the sake of SUSE 10 and SLED 10.

Before, I recompiled the Kommander utility without any success. I think the kdelibs are broken or patched by the SUSE team.

The changeWidgetText function cannot be replaced, it is a basic function. I intend to change the Extract page in the future, but the problem is more general on SUSE. The font handling of SUSE is heavily pathched. I use an Nvidia card, and I have to set the default font size to 28 - 32. SUSE do not folows the general rules for font rendering applied on other Linux based systems.

The problen is more complicated for 64 bit machines.

What are the font sizes displayed in the KDE Control Center?

'I tried to install SUSE 10.1 on my pc. The third installation was only successful. The first and the second installation resulted broken systems. There were other errors on SUSE 10.1, so I changed it for SLED 10.' It was written to linux3114a.

I ask you to open the kommander, the development tool. (Type simply 'kommander'!) Then create a new 'wizard'! Do not add to it anything. Save it and click ont the obtained name.kmdr file! Can you see a window, or happens nothing. Try to run kmdr-executor name.kmdr in comman line. If error message appears, your kommander is corrupt.
Download the following file:

http://www.kde.me.uk/kommander-tutorial/konstruct.kmdr

It must work. It is a classic teaching example for kommander.

Try this before:

kmdr-executor /usr/lib/rmt-installer/rmt-installer.kmdr

Maybe an other application tries to open it, not the kmdr-executor. - Sep 11 2006

The test on SUSE 10 has been finished.
There were not problems with it.
It also works on SUSE 9.1 and SLED 10.
The problem is specific to SUSE 10.1.

The line 1 is correct.
Try to download again the package.

If it does not help, try to remove the package kdewebdev3 and install the Kommander from source.

I tried to install SUSE 10.1 on my pc. The third installation was only successful. The first and the second installation resulted broken systems. There were other errors on SUSE 10.1, so I changed it for SLED 10.

Is there any error message?

Type in a Konsole:

kmdr-executor /usr/lib/rmt-installer/rmt-installer.kmdr

If it works:

Modify the file /usr/bin/rmt-installer!

Change the line

kmdr-executor $KDEDIR/lib/rmt-installer/rmt-installer.kmdr

to

kmdr-executor /usr/lib/rmt-installer/rmt-installer.kmdr

Or use it from the context menu, right click on a tar.gz or tar.bz2 file, Actions... see the first picture!

If does not work:

Try to run an other commander script downloaded from the Kommander Scripts section of kde-apps.org!
Is the result the same? - Sep 11 2006

Thanks for the information.
It was not tested on Slackware at all.

Open a konsole and type:
checkinstall.

I think, the checkinstall utility is not in the path, so it cannot be used. Make a link from the checkinstall AND installwatch scripts (can be found e.g. in the /usr/local/sbin) to the /usr/bin. - Sep 11 2006

It works on SUSE 9.1 and SLED 10.

You must tell more about the problem.
Open a Konsole and type rmt-installer.

If the wizard does not appear at all, you have to install the package kdewebdev3 or the Kommander from source.

You must also install the checkinstall package. (See the links above!)

The 42 % is not depend on any usage of the menu.
I compiled and installed it. At this time there was not any problem with it.
Next day I rebooted the computer, and it was too slow. The consumtion of the "kicker" showed 42 %.
It must be a bug. You have not to find ways to make it lighter. It worked well after the installation.

I installed the qt 4.0.0 downloaded from trhe Trolltech's site on the folowing systems:
Suse (SLED 10)
Debian testing (2006. January)

Both of them give the following error message:

/usr/bin/uic-qt4 src/maincontrol.ui -o ui_maincontrol.h
/usr/bin/uic-qt4 src/light.ui -o ui_light.h
/usr/bin/uic-qt4 src/material.ui -o ui_material.h

./ui_animat.h:85: error: 'class QProgressBar' has no member named 'setOrientation'
make: *** [main.o] Error 1

Then, I istalled the qt 4.1.4 version downloaded from trhe Trolltech's site.

Zhu3d can be compiled only with this version. If I were you, I reinstalled the qt 4.0.0 version, otherwise Zhu3d could be compiled only on unstable linux versions.

There is another problem present:
The characters in the menus are too small to read it (4-5 pixels), so I can navigate only seeing your screenshots.
Why does not Zhu3d use the system settings?
I use Nvidia's driver. I suppose you have another card. After installing the Nvidia's driver, the character sizes must be heavily enlarged for the system.

It is a useful tool both for linux and windows.
Is there any licencing problem concerning the conversion of Webshots files to jpg?

The most popular image viewer on windows, Irfanview supported the Webshots format in the past. Then, Webshots asked to be removed from this utility.

I think, the use of Webshots images on linux does not offend the licence, but the conversion? It depends on the Webshots' whim.

You can find a library for displaying Webshots images as background images for KDE:

The uic-qt4 is a binary file and is in the libqt4-dev Debian package (testing and unstable). It is in the

/usr/bin/ and linked to the qt4 /bin directory.

Trolltech does not deliver just a Debian-special version, but it is patched my the Debian community.

All of the qt4 packages are installed on my system, and I can successfully install another qt4 applications.

What about the symbol conflict?

Do you use qt4.0 or qt4.1, gcc3 or ggc4?

Can you include your Makefile generated by qmake in the source package? I could edit it manually for Debian systems.

I have not /uic-qt4, but I have uic-qt4.
I think, this error is not due to the symbol conflict.
So, I modified the Makefile:
/uic-qt4 -> uic-qt4

I tried to edit makefile, but every time new problems appeared. The first two were two strange paths for files...

I will give you all of them.

I can succesfully install other qt4 applications.

The version 0.4.1 seems to work without any crash on Debian, but we should wait some days before claiming it to be stable...
I will test it comprehensively.

Cannot be installed on Debian.
Tonns of errors in the makefile.
It cannot find the uic-qt4, but it is installed, it is in the path and the environmental variables have been set correctly. It cannot be edited manually, a total revision is need.

Do not expect to much from k3b on debian.
Not only the verification fails, but the copied CDs cannot be played with CD players. (The tracks will not be recognized.)
You can install ffmpegcvs downloaded from the mplayer's home page. The distro's ffmpeg is very old. The problem is the similar for Lame. You can download it eg. from the ubuntu site:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/source/lame
and compile from source. So, k3b can be compiled with lame mp3 and ffmpeg support. Another question is that these codecs work with k3b or does not. Do not be optimist!

I accept Aladrink's answer, but I do not Lunimare's one.

Aladrink is a user determined by the trends, but Lunimare presented a design.

What would happen if nobody followed the "tendency of market"?
It could be the MS's fate, maybe Novell's. Linux is not a participant of the market, although the market is determined by Linux. SuSE was a good distribution till the 9.x series. SuSE 10.0 is slow and fails to install correctly on several computers. The DVD version of 10.1 cannot be installed on any computer. This could be the only affect of the market on SuSE. Linux becomes weak on the market. Linux can be strong only without the market. Linux is a right to use an OS on your computer.

"If MS published an ugly theme, nobody would want to copy it."
I am not sure of that. Every Windows user not using Linux believe to MS's advertising: "Windows is the best and the only useful OS on PC's".

"New things and old things will continue to be invented and reinventeds and the consumption mass will decide the way to follow."

The designers' task is to determine the consumption and not to be determined by the consumption. The designer is who invent and reinvent things and not the consumption. The desing is before the consumption.

Who will create new things? I mean things do not follow the "tendency of market".
Every new think is "out". Then they will determine the new trends.

Do MS determine the Linux trends?
Or we, Linux users?

I have not problem with your work.

I have only problem with the left corner, down. The kbfx delays the KDE startup about 5-10 sec. It is a Vista imitation and strange on Linux systems, so cannot be integrated.

The transparency is not from the Vista, it is from xfree/xorg. It can be integrated into Linux, but not into Windows. So, Vista is slow.

Linux never will become to Vista. There is not two identical things is the world.

Keep your own work, but do not continue MS's work on Linux.

I would use Beesoft Commander instead of krusader, because it is simplier, but there is a problem with it. Changing the directory, it resizes the column with. It makes Beesoft Commander slow and boring for my eyes.
Switching off the resize function must be an option for the user.

You are right.
I used the mouse-double-clicks.
Their is no other control-center-module using the double-click-event. I think, the Control Center can not handle this at all, or the second click is not taken into consideration by KDE Control Center. Is it possible to clear the second click after opening an application? There must be a solution for the problem.

I like your pictures, but I am thinking about the low scores. You named it "red whirl". What would happen if you changed the name to e.g. "Debian whirl"? What kind of things determine scores? My opinion:

2. artistic effects
3. practicality (e.g. the icons can be seen on it and therefore can be used as a wallpapper)

K3b

Utilities by trueg 224 comments

In the case of K3b 0.12.14 still have the "Could not find flle..." problem on Debian systems.

When I choosed the 103 characters Joliet file names but nothing else from the advanced options, the verification failed.
After that continuing the project, I burned a second session. The "Allow lowercase characters in ISO9660 filenames" option was enabled, and the verification worked fine also for the imported previous session. (In this case the previous session also was verified. I think, because the time of the scanning process was too long.)

Verification worked fine without enabling the "Allow lowercase characters in ISO9660 filenames" when I burned files with only ISO 9660 file names.
I think, the verification problem is not an essential bug, but only a "miscommunication" of the burning dialog.

The 0.12.14 version of K3b can only be compiled without FLAC. (The error messages will be presented next time.) So, the version 0.12.12 was better.

I have the following problem with the automatic settings:

I burned a 450 MB session, then I burned a second, 10 MB session using the automatic option. K3b closed the 650 MB disk with more than 100 MB free space. What will happen, if I continue a disk with 300 MB free space, or a DVD with 1 GB free space? I cannot predict the behavior of K3b.

K3b cannot display the free space on the disk, only the summarized file sizes. This means that e.g. 610 Mb can bee seen, but the 650 Mb CD is full.

Does K3b use the same buffer size for burning DVDs and CDs?

In some cases not just data project verification fails. There are broken sessions/files if:

1. you burn DVD with several thousands of small files using the max speed in DAO mode, and the buffer size is the default;
2. you continue a multisession CD (in some cases, there are broken files);
3. you use a CD writer demand a special cdrwtools/cdrecord switch (not supported by k3b).

So the data verification could be very important. Burning optimisation is not possible without this function.

I have problems with the default settings, and the meaning of the "auto" options. (What does the "auto" means, eg. continue a multisession disk, or continue and close? How can I find out its meaning?)

The version 0.12.13 does not compiles with gcc4 on Debian. Only gcc3.4 can be used.

KBFX Silk (KBFX 0.4.9.3.1)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by sirajr 612 comments

I cannot compile the 0.4.8 version.
I have successfully compiled the 0.4.8.2 CVS.
I have repacked the binaries from SUSE (Guru) and Mandriva (Tex) for Debian (testing).

There are lot of (common) bugs in all of the above versions.

The kcfg module has several warnings, e.g:

kdecore (KConfigDialogManager): WARNING: A widget named 'kcfg_ThemeList' was found but there is no setting named 'ThemeList'
kdecore (KConfigDialogManager): WARNING: A widget named 'kcfg_CategoryWidth_2' was found but there is no setting named 'CategoryWidth_2'

The theme cannot be changed, the .kbfx directory cannot be opened.

The menu (Vista) can be read only with a magnifier. Using background picture is not a good solution: the window cannot be sized.
There are many bugs also in the menu. The characters disappeare when moving towards the left side of the window.

It is not convinient to scroll the menu using the mouse wheel. Moving the mouse pointer up- and downside also must force to scroll the menu.
In this state of the kbfx, I do not see any advantage of kbfx menu against the K-menu.

Buggy and inconvinient. I do not understand the kbfx funs.
