Have you tied any of the Nautilus 2.2 series? The latest is 2.2.1 (though currently my version is 2.2, and I've not seen any speed problems since the early 1.x and 2.x releases). - Mar 16 2003

You've more than hit the nail on the head with the second update to the first screenshot, you've knocked it perfectly flush into the wood!
Code that baby! :o) - Jul 07 2002

1) No gradient - as others have pointed out, it destroys the elegance. I personally prefer KDE Default over HiColor Default for that reason. But still, keep it as an option in KControl for those who insist.
2) More shadows for widget elements. Keep the widgets themselves flat (eg, pushbuttons, readiobuttons, checkboxes, etc), but make them appear a little more raised from the window background - this improves usability by making the widgets more discernable from the background, especially so since everything (including the widgets themselves) is flat. It appears now that every widget does have shadow; I would just suggest make it a little bit (not a lot!) more pronounced. BTW, I love it! :o)
3) Colors - make them configurable (ie, go with the current color scheme). For example, I assume the orange border in the button in the screenshot is meant to show that it's the default button (has keyboard focus). Some folks may not care for orange. I would suggest keeping the border, but make it a darker hue than the color of the window background.
4) Definitely use regular shapes. The offset rectangles in the second screenshot make look cool at first, but that's gonna confuse the hell outta people and look just gaudy later on. It serves no functional purpose (things like shadows, however, do)
5) Progress bar - increase the contrast between the progress bar background and the progress bar text.
All things considered, this a GREAT style (referring to the first screenshot), and I'm truly excited that this style is coming into existence.
Eagerly looking forward to what may come,
Ty - Jul 07 2002

KDE 3 Color Schemes by norman 9 comments

Things I would suggest:
1) Wallpaper - while the existing one has a 'gee-whiz' componenet to it, a matted grey backgorund would provide more contrast and be easier on the eyes (black window bordes/title and black background would get confused).
2) Finish out the iconset (probably something to be done by the icontheme's maintainer) to provide more consistency
You're onto a good thing here. Somee more work and we're on our way to having a usbale high-contrast theme. - May 03 2002

What I'm talking about is FAKING IT by drawing something that simulates a shadow onto the cursor itself, ie, it's part of the cursor image.
Take, for example, the standard white arrow cursor. It has a black border all the way around it. Now make the right and botton borders a little bit thicker and color them grey. A simulated shadow if you wull.
No blending or anything else like that, nothing whatsoever to do with XRender. If you can draw cursors in all shapes and sizes as we do already, you can do this. It won't look like the blending found with the hardware accelerated stuff. It will look like a regular cursor with a drawn-in dropshadow (ie, like handind drawing "3D" letters on a piece of paper - a part of the image itself). - May 01 2002

I don't know how many times I've cursed when I written a paper for class in SO, taken it to the computer lab to print it out, only to discover that my careful formatting is screwed up. Often times it's worse than that. I can't live like that, I need to be able to take it from one computer to another without having to repair the formatting and whatnot every single time.
Too many people send Word documents around, and simply telling them to use rtf isn't gonna make them change. (You also loose formatting when you use rtf).
As for the browsers, I agree. - Apr 20 2002
For Mandrake, grab the RH "webfonts-noarch" rpm from rpmfind.net, which gives you things like Verdana, Arial, etc. - Apr 20 2002

I was gonna d it for some of mine, but never got around to it.
I wonder how hard it would be to add drop shadows to icon text and windows in KDE? I submitted a wishlist sometime back in the 2.x days, but I'd say that's rather low priority next to other things. :o) - Apr 10 2002

Might wanna stick all of them in a tarball; the bad ratings are probably coming from the multiple postings. - Apr 07 2002
I think the main problem is the wallpaper. The vertical stripe clashes with the icons, and the copyright statement just sticks out there. I'd take away the stripe or move it to the right side, or just fade it a lot, and move the copyright on bottom so it is hid by kicker (but still be there). I'd also maybe ghost the lithiun text a bit, so it's stylish but not in the way.

Ditto regarding the icons.
It would probably be a good idea to maybe fade/ghost the combobox a bit (in stylish manner, maybe very subtle, slight motion blur in both directions or however you get that effect), so people (newbies) don't mistake it for an actual combobox and thinking this is where they can changwe the style. Sounds dumb, I know, but I bet ya ten dollars to a doughnut somebody will.
Did I say that I love that KDE3 text? - Mar 26 2002

1) The black hole looks as if it's sitting in the accretion disk, kinda like a bowling ball on a matress. Shouldn't the accretion disk be more around the "equator", so to speak, of the black hole?
2) Make the jets inot a tigher cone as they leave the event horizon (going more to a point as they go in), and maybe add some _faint_ hints to make them appear to be swirling, as I'd say they'd be rotating themselves.

Ooohhh, I'm about to pee in my pants (well, not really. But I am excited. Hold me over 'til I get my PowerBook. Then I'll use Konq in XDarwin with HP Liquid as my browser :o) ).
I did this style a while back with an icon theme that came with an olde version of Arronax's Aqua theme which was essentially the icons from OSX converted to KDE icons. Lastest version of Aqua has a different set of icons. - Mar 24 2002

You took care of everything. The wallpaper functions excellently. Icons stand out really well. And you picked the pefect shade of blue.
Thanks again! And, BTW, cool homepage.

My suggestions:
1) Make a blue version. I love blue. Yeah, this is personal preference. Yeah, you can do the hue effect thing in the Wallpaper dialog, but it puts a choppy gradient coloring to it.
2) Make the left side square fade, as right now the lines make it difficult to make out icons and icon text.
3) Also make the left side a little more the color of the right side. Especially with the dark squares, it's too busy and you can't make out icons.
Keep up the great work!
Ty

1) Rename to slick-1.2.1.tar.bz2
2) bunzip2 slick-1.2.1.tar.bz2
3) gzip slick-1.2.1.tar
Now you can install slick-1.2.1.tar.gz via KControl!

Nothing wrong with using it, a photo is a photo. I particularly like the "Cliff in Clouds" that comes with ME. I used to use it with KDE a lot.
I use M$ ttf fonts on my system, simply because they look better than the ones that ship w/ most distributions. Like someone once said earlier, we've paid for those fonts and backgorunds before, so we might as well use 'em.
The Kicker background has nothing to do with Windows, as far as I know. It was included in a kicker backround pack. Kudos to the author - they are quite nic and do jazz up kicker a bit. - Mar 18 2002
