It seems that we have never actually decided on our main goals, so now is a great time to decide ;) We need to come to an agreement before we go much farther, so please comment!

What is our overall goal? To become a popular DE, or be an example of an ideal interface? Or both?

I doubt that unless the project becomes as main-stream as Gnome or KDE, no application developer will change a program to be compatible with us. However, if we have ideal goals in place, but delay them so existing programs will still work, then later on perhaps we would have enough influence to cause application developers to use our methods. Or, possibly an existing DE would like our project and use some of it's ideas.

I (I'm speaking for myself here) think we should limit ourselves to only creating a "shell" but not our own development libraries, similar in some ways to Unity. While we could try to make an entirely different system from the start, people would not accept the changes, so we introduce them in stages. We can use some "hacks" such as a global menu that uses our design, but still use the standard GTK and QT. Then, if we get a good amount of acceptance, we can try introducing better ways of writing programs. - Oct 28 2011

I'm really sorry! Whenever I post a message to my group it keeps going to the latest artwork!!!

I wish someone would fix this problem - Oct 05 2011

I guess this would be a very important thing to establish early on in designing.

I'm leaning more towards a power user or an office worker who needs to get things done fast without being frustrated by the interface. - Oct 05 2011

I came up with this idea on how panels could work:

GTK Theme Maker

Utilities by user333 8 comments

Yes, I am planning to support multiple files. What do you think of having each widget type in a separate file? I've seen some GTK3 themes done like that, and it makes things really easy to edit. I would add a drop-down menu where you could select the widget type, and a text editor would show only that widget's section. This would solve a lot of technical problems if I did it this way. Even though there wouldn't be a GUI for editing themes, CSS isn't that hard to learn. I am planning to implement one in the future but for now I don't want to mess with a CSS parser(something that would be critical in order to open up files, but with a text box I don't need it).

By the way, I found a solution to the bug I mentioned. With a little work the theming engine settings will work properly, and I'll update it as soon as I can get the code done. (I've posted two other messages saying this, but for some odd reason they didn't show up) - Aug 15 2011

There seems to be a BIG bug in the program... theme engine settings do not affect anything, only the colors change. I guess I'll have to find a way to set the theme another way. Do any of you know how to do this? I used to know how (in GTK2) but I'm not sure about GTK3. - Aug 13 2011

It seems you discovered the other problem I didn't mention ;) I borrowed the widget set from TWL's glade file and didn't "declare" the widgets in the Python code, so the widgets don't actually work yet. - Aug 09 2011
Can you handle the code?

So you are doing css and html too ^^
I wouldn't want it as a desktop background, but it looks kind of like a really cool magazine cover :) The name would be cool for a website too. - Jan 17 2011

Your themes are getting better by the day :)

I would only add that the frame looks a little flat in comparison to the buttons. It might need a more 3d look like the buttons, but it looks great the way it is too - Sep 12 2010

great theme! a new favorite ;) just one thing bugs me, though. The tool boxes in gimp don't have any borders, and it is a pain to use the window menu or the alt key to move them. I also noticed that diolouges don't have buttons either. Could you make a version that all the window types have borders and buttons? I don't really know about metacity or gtk enough to edit that myself. - Feb 21 2010
