Visual Volume Display (vvd)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by jeshuabratman 16 comments

Maybe delay isn't the right term. What i mean is that when i keep the volume up pressed for a while, and then release it, it doesn't directly stop, but keeps going a little bit.

About the background color: i personally don't like to have it the same background as the other programs do. VVD doesn't look like an application, more like a plasmoid or so. That's why i made the background dark gray, while the background of programs is light gray.
I just searched for background in the trolltech documentation, i don't know qt very well (i don't know c++ very well either)
The changes about the config files sound nice

(i'm by the way not using gentoo anymore, as i spend too much time compiling :P) - Jan 12 2008
Visual Volume Display (vvd)

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by jeshuabratman 16 comments

For me it's not necessary, because i used to compile my complete installation (gentoo :P), so i'm used to it. It could be easier for some people who are having troubles with compiling, but on the other hand, i don't think they'll be able to configure vvd if they can't even compile it :P (i learned how to compile a program before i learned how to set up shortcuts)
I would deliver just the source, it saves even some bandwidth ;) - Jan 12 2008

I like the new version :)
It would by the way be useful if you used versions, so we can see whether we have to update or not.
For myself, i added this line: qApp->setStyleSheet("QWidget { background-color: #535353 }");
I don't know if it's the right method, but i found it in the qt docs and it works. On my laptop, i have installed kubuntu, and it contains an application that does the same as vvd (if it had worked) and has about the same color i added. I think it looks better now :)

I configured the shortcuts as following: i started kmenuedit, added 3 new programs (volume_up, volume_down and volume_toggle). I configured the commands ('/usr/bin/vvd' Front toggle for example) and deactivated the startup notification. (that's an important one, else, you will fill your complete taskbar after changing the volume a few steps :P)
One disadvantage of vvd that kmix doesn't have, is the delay. In kmix, i could easily hold my volume up button until i reached the right volume, and then release the volume button. With vvd, i have to release it much earlier because of the delay. I don't know whether this is solvable? - Jan 12 2008

Ahum, i forgot to check the dependencies. Installing boost-devel solved the problem :$ - Jan 10 2008

I'm liking it a bit more now i actually managed to add a shortcut to the program. I first had to edit the menu and add vvd. I didn't compile vvd myself, i used the binary instead. When i tried to compile it, i got an error. It says that boost/regex.hpp is missing. Will there be made a menu shortcut when you compile the program? Because that would make it a bit more user friendly.
About plasma: when you're using KDE4, i think you will be using plasma, as it's an important part of kde (panel is plasma and amarok uses it, for example)
You say you don't want to redesign the shortcut system, but can't you make a small dialog which uses the same components that kcontrol uses to setup shortcuts? Isn't there a standard library or so for it?
2 features i would like to see are a mute function and to be able to decide where the bar will show. It's shows in the upper left corner right know, and i would like to have it up in the center. - Jan 10 2008

I agree that kde's volume bar doesn't work very well, but I don't think you just solved it. I tried your program, and it works from the command line. But setting these shortcuts to execute your program just isn't the right solution i think. It isn't very user friendly.
I was thinking about a plasma widget with some eyecandy which would pop up when you pressed the volume keys.
Amarok already has this sort of osd when you lower or raise the volume in amarok. - Jan 10 2008
CopyCover (amaroK Script)

Amarok 1.x Scripts by gauret 143 comments

I really like your script, though i probably use it for something else then the rest of you guys do. I guess you use this script to set the album cover as the folder icon?
I use it for my mp3 player (Cowon iAudio A2), which can display album covers. This mp3 player detects whether you have a cover.jpg in the folder of the song you are playing. If it is, it displays this image, else, it displays the default empty cd icon. The problem of using this script for that purpose is that my mp3 player only supports jpg's as album cover, no png's. Just renaming cover.png to cover.jpg doesn't fool my mp3 player.
So i had to think of another solution: change the script. I editted, and replaced all png's with jpg's and all jpg's by png's. It didn't work though, because the python script doesn't use (I needed some time to find that out :P)
Now i got it working, but i have to run the script each time an cover has been added. Is there a possibility to implent this feature in the python script?

By the way: i had to change musicdirs="awk command" to musicdirs="/path/to/music", because "awk -F "=" '/^Collection Folders/ {print $2}' ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc" doesn't give any results. (amarokrc does exist)

Then something else: is it, or will it be, possible for amarok to copy the cover.jpg automatically to my mp3 player, that would be great. (you can just drag and drop files to the iaudio a2, it doesn't use any database)
Maybe this would be a nice feature for amarok 2.0? Please let me know if you would like that feature too. (maybe i will submit a mockup for amarok) - Jul 27 2007
Aero AIO

Karamba & Superkaramba by AdrienV 342 comments

I really like this theme, though there are some things that could be improved. Most things are already mentioned by MartyMcFly. I especially agree with his suggestions on the amarok theme, gmail improvement and making the calendar more useful.

There are some other things i would like to report. First of all, in the configuration applet, i can't see any characters on the buttons. (for example the plugin load button) The button is just empty.
Secondly, the mail plugin tells me i have 43 new emails, but that's the number of emails that are in my main inbox (i have sub inboxes too, where the theme doesn't search in)
I didn't have any new emails. I'm using imap, xs4all is my provider and i'm using thunderbird as mail client (don't know if that matters)

I really hope you keep improving aero aio theme, it's the best theme i've ever seen. - Jul 27 2007

I just checked the settings and I saw that not all the characters are visible.
For example: at the window tab, it should say: Start Minimized, but I only see Start Minimiz.

Same for Colors tab, last line, Interface tab end of the first line etc.

It looks like the text fields are too short (don't know how these dialogs are made) - Apr 11 2007

I got it working now, though I had one problem.
On gentoo, I'm not able (and have never been) to execute a kde program just by calling the name in the terminal. I have to type /usr/kde/3.5/bin/PROGRAMNAME to extecute it. So got this error when doing make install as root:
/bin/sh: kde-config: command not found
KDEDIR not set!

I changed the 10th line in the makefile so it executed /usr/kde/3.5/bin/kde-config. I don't know if all the kde directories on different distro's are the same (I guess not), so I don't know how you would need to fix it.

Thanks for fixing it by the way - Apr 11 2007

Great program! Unfortunately, it doesn't compile here anymore (since 0.3.5 i think)
I'm getting this error with 0.3.6-1 when I do make:
TrafficWindow.h:49:24: error: remoteRead.h: No such file or directory
then it stops compiling.

I'm using gentoo on amd64 architecture.
Could you please solve this? (or is it my fault? :P)

Thanks in advance

Rainbyte Video Converter

Video Converters by rainbyte 11 comments

Divx is the most important codec that's missing, i think. I would like to have support for matroska files (mkv) too, because i always download prison break in that file format, and i can't play it on my cowon iaudio a2.

Something else that needs improvement are the resolutions. The maximum resolution is 640x480. Support for HDTV would be nice. (720p and 1080p) Maybe you can make it possible to choose a custom resolution so we can type it by ourselves? You could do that for the bitrate settings too.

What i think the cd/dvd tab is doing, is that you can convert for example a xvid movie to a dvd. Am i correct or not?

There are some little things that are needed to be fixed on the about tab. The text field is not big enough, so there are some letters missing (it says converte in stead of converter)

I'm from Holland by the way

Your program looks really nice, though it needs a lot more file types to support. It would be nice if you didn't use a terminal but a progress bar (if that's possible at all)

But why do you start another project while there are 2 other projects who try to make the same app? Why don't you guys work together and make 1 great program to convert all formats and change all settings. I don't really know which one to choose right now. ;)

The projects i found were:
KVideoencoder, Kubuntu Multimedia Converter (an improved Multimedia Converter which doesn't have that much buttons)

Please go on and improve your program,
Good luck

P.s. sorry if i don't type correct english - Feb 27 2007
