"This just didn't work for me. I browsed to /usr/share and selected 'open as root', entered password and ...... NOTHING happened"

Maybe, kdesu is installed on your system, but it doesn't work. To make it work, you need to create a simlink:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/kf5/kdesu /usr/bin/kdesu
After which it start working normally. Try it. In my KDE Neon it helped. - Sep 18 2020
