Many thanks for your fine work on a much-needed application. It's straight-forward and intuitive, without sacrificing power and flexibility. I'm wondering if it would be possible to implement a "whitelist" feature, which would only allow certain programs to be run by a user, especially during a given time. Also, for the "Program Times" and "Program Duration" tabs, couldn't you give the option to add more programs than the imposed limit of five? - Mar 23 2012

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by thomas12777 117 comments

Yakuake, for example, is a program whose main window should be animated differently from most others. You've got Plasma pop-ups covered, so that's good, but back when I used Compiz, in certain cases a certain program using separate effects made sense visually (just don't ask for examples on that-- it's been a long time since I really used Compiz ;). - Oct 19 2011

QtCurve by Contrast 3 comments

Much appreciated; I'm glad you like it.
As for Bespin: It's a great engine that has several capabilities I wish QtCurve had, but given its lack of Gtk support, I can't see myself putting any real effort into creating a theme for it. Plus last time I checked, it still lacks custom gradients - one of the killer features of QtCurve, IMO. Sorry. :\ - Aug 26 2011

Sorry this is rather off-topic, but I was attempting the aforementioned fix for another problem (when both Glide and Sheet are enabled, modal dialogs do both animations, which looks pretty nasty). I'm not really having much luck mucking about with the ordering though. Any ideas?
Also, do you have anything in the works? Your previous animations were great; I was hoping to see more from you. :) - Jul 14 2011

First and foremost, thanks for all your work on such an awesome program. Kwooty has done a wonderful job of making things dead simple for a Usenet/NZB noob like myself.
Unfortunately, I've run into a bug that's forcing me to use Pan for the moment. Kwooty constantly loses all but one connection to the server, severely limiting the download speed. I submitted a detailed bug report here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3361080&group_id=285032&atid=1208199. (By the way, it's mighty impressive that this is the only open bug on Kwooty's bug tracker! ^_^ ) Let me know if there's any other info I can provide to help troubleshoot. Thanks! - Jul 09 2011

Plasma Themes by marcotangaro 22 comments

This looks really promising. For the moment, it's actually displaced my very long-running Aya/Tibanna custom theme. A couple questions/nitpicks though: 1) I'm guessing you plan on implementing a better-matching pager? Aya's is currently filling that gap for me. 2) Regarding Kickoff, the tab bar looks quite sexy, but the dark background of the border and bottom section contrasts a bit too strongly IMO. 3) Any plans on releasing a lighter version? 4) A one- or two-pixel gap between the edge of the panel and the edge of the icons it contains would be a nice touch.
Having said that, don't take all these nitpicks harshly-- I only take the time to make suggestions like that when I'm really impressed. - Jun 17 2011

This scheme deserves extra praise for maintaining sleekness while avoiding the pitfall most dark color schemes suffer from: its background colors are light enough for black text to still be readable in apps that don't properly follow it. Nice work. - Jun 17 2011
Yet Another Window Control

Plasma 4 Extensions by csslayer 59 comments

This is by far the best plasmoid of its kind; it's allowed me to have this [pretty much] titlebar-less layout: http://i.imgur.com/A8Cbv.png. I only wish that it could more closely emulate KWin's native titlebars; i.e:
1) its buttons don't show up for certain dialog windows (whose titlebars do show the buttons);
2) right- or middle-clicking the maximize button doesn't maximize horizontally or vertically, respectively;
3) there's no option for setting the appearance of the buttons to KWin's native buttons;
4) not all of KWin's buttons are implemented (it'd be really nice if the "Configure Buttons" dialog in the "Window Decorations" KCM could be ported to this widget).
How feasible is it to add these features? In any case, thanks for your great work on this widget. :D
(As a side note to those who have been asking about hiding the titlebar for maximized windows, QtCurve has an option for this.) - Jun 16 2011

(I'm hoping this hasn't been abandoned - no updates in ~half a year and the creator hasn't visited in months.) This is a very handy little widget, but
it would be great if it could be added to the screensaver's widget layer; maybe even a killer app for those of us living with people who may have to sometimes borrow things without asking if we're not around. It's apparently possible to add user-installed widgets to the screen saver, as I have Now Rocking added there. - May 14 2011

Various Games by hyper80 7 comments

Being just a user myself (and not a developer), this looks like it could be a fun little "toy" to play around with (not to downplay your work at all, but unless I'm missing something, that seems to be about the extent of it?). I could see it actually being useful if someone wanted to easily generate some CG scenery for whatever images they might be working with. Is it possible to export images of the generated trees, independent of their respective background, perhaps to PNGs? Another (probably obvious) usage scenario I could see this being even more helpful in is in game development. Are there any plans to implement an export-to-model feature for your program? I imagine such functionality could take your application from "fun little app" to "very useful program" in one stroke. Just my two cents. :-) - May 14 2011
I've noticed that, for Gtk2 programs, keyboard shortcuts for menubar items don't work if the menubar is hidden. Is this a limitation of Gtk2 itself, or something that could be remedied within QtCurve? - May 13 2011

Good work (and extra kudos for providing packages for so many distros). Any plans to add an option for requiring a keyword? As it is now (and this applies to the default Bookmarks runner as well), the bookmarks runners get in my way more than they're worth-- I have probably >1000 bookmarks, so whenever I start typing something into KRunner to do something non-bookmark-related, a bookmark is almost always the first match anyway. :\ - Apr 22 2011
Timoid

Plasma 4 Extensions by nehlsen 17 comments

I finally got over my inclination to stick Timoid on a panel, and it's definitely looking a lot better. Of course, now there's another little quirk that's bugging me: Is there a particular reason Timoid uses the ugly and outdated system for its popups, rather than Plasma's notifications? Just in case you didn't know, a quick call to kdialog makes this trivially easy:
Quote:kdialog --passivepopup <message>
I had a look at the source, but given a little bit of Bash is the extent of my coding knowledge, I didn't know where to go from there.
Also, Timoid might be the first Plasma widget I've seen whose setting dialog doesn't include a "Keyboard Shortcut" section. Considering Timoid definitely works best when placed on the desktop, it really needs a keyboard shortcut for pulling up its context menu (otherwise the user has to switch desktops or minimize windows to start a timer, thus cutting into Timoid's greatest strength: its efficiency).
I did get the impression that you're not too heavily invested in this project, but I really hope you give my suggestions some consideration. I only take the time to write long-winded comments like these for software that I'm really impressed by. :D I've been using this widget very heavily over the past couple weeks (setting reminders for everything that doesn't warrant an entry in KOrganizer), and I think it's one of the few widgets that, minus a couple blemishes, really allows Plasma to shine. - Apr 11 2011

Pretty friggin' gorgeous, mate. That toolbar gradient is especially lovely; I just might have to use that in the next theme I push out :D (giving proper credit, of course)... My only complaint, from a usability perspective, is that there's practically no distinction between the titlebars of active and inactive windows (at least on the crappy low-contrast laptop screen I'm using). - Apr 11 2011

Great work on this; it really should be the default on Pulse-enabled systems. Do you think you could add an option for disabling the popup tooltip on volume changes (so that fullscreen Flash windows don't close whenever you change the volume)? - Apr 04 2011
Do you think it would be possible to add an option for adding a thin border around tooltips?
Also, Firefox 4 appears to be using a slightly different color for its toolbars. Is there a way that QtCurve could force it to use the "correct" color? - Apr 04 2011

I found a bug in KPackageKit that occurs when using any style that does not draw a background gradient. When clicking a package, the info pane is not redrawn properly. Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/TwR61.png. Resizing or moving the window causes it to update correctly, but this is a bit tedious. :\

Cool idea; I can't count the times I was having mic issues where this would have come in handy. Do you know how well it interacts with PulseAudio?

Plasma 4 Extensions by nehlsen 17 comments

Not sure how I'm just now discovering this little widget, but it's really, really nice. The ability to efficiently start a countdown with a custom time is the killer feature I've been looking for. The only thing keeping it from perfection is the inability to set a minimum font size (or to simply keep the text on one line)-- I'm using the widget in a somewhat slim panel and its text is barely readable when a timer is running. This is a really small nitpick though. :) - Mar 26 2011
(Forgive me if this has already been addressed; I searched the last few pages of comments for "kpackagekit" and came up with nil.)
When using the QtCurve style, the info pane in KPackageKit is not redrawn properly when clicking a package. I took a couple of screenshots to illustrate what I mean:
1) what it looks like: http://i.imgur.com/TwR61.png
2) what it should look like: http://i.imgur.com/HvDFw.png
Resizing or moving the window causes it to update correctly, but this is a bit tedious. :\

I tested several different themes (Default, Flat, and a custom one) and they all exhibit this behavior. I'm using the latest version of QtCurve (1.8.7) on Kubuntu 11.04 (but I experienced the same issue on 10.10).

Many thanks for all your hard work on the best style engine in existence! :D - Mar 25 2011
Did this happen after switching the "Window Decorations" theme to use QtCurve? I experience a similar bug every time I first switch the titlebars to QtCurve, but simply running "kwin --replace &" fixes it right away. (I only have to do this after first switching-- in subsequent sessions, QtCurve loads properly.) - Mar 25 2011

Smooth Tasks

Plasma 4 Extensions by panzi 840 comments

Strange. It's working perfectly fine here. Here are the exact steps I followed; hopefully this helps (I didn't have to clear my KDE configuration upon upgrading from KDE SC 4.5.4 to 4.5.85, by the way).

1) sudo apt-get install cmake kdelibs5-dev kdebase-workspace-dev checkinstall
(You may or may not need libqt4-dev as well - I already had it installed.)

2) In the directory of the extracted archive, run the following commands:
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$(kde4-config --prefix) ../
make
sudo checkinstall
...follow the prompts...
kbuildsycoca4

That's it. If it's still crashing Plasma for you, kill Plasma manually (Alt+F2 -> killall plasma-desktop), then run "plasma-desktop &" from the terminal and post the output from when it crashes. - Dec 09 2010
