Plasma 4 Extensions by Lechio 573 comments

Hi,

It can be edited with Inkscape (I'm using it to make the backgrounds). All it takes is to replace the objects with others of your preference (don't forget to embed the images if you are importing them). The backgrounds are cached, it may be necessary to remove Daisy from the desktop and restart the plasma desktop for changes to appear.
Some new backgrounds are going to be added for circular role.

This is a very requested feature for Daisy, the option to cover windows. It's not available yet as it requires major changes to the applet. It's being worked on.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting it. It's the same error as reported above and it seem to be related with libtaskmanager by looking at the debug output:
../../../libs/taskmanager/task.cpp:407

This is a KDE library, not included in Daisy. Daisy uses this library to access tasks. If this isn't a bug from Daisy, there's nothing I can do about it.
I'm not experiencing this bug on my system, it becomes harder to know for sure what's going on.

Hi there.

I'm trying to reproduce this, without any luck so far. Doesn't behave like that on my system when opening dialogs in synaptic. Does it behave like that only for synaptic?

Looking at the log, this issue seems to be related with libtaskamanger. - Nov 03 2009

This updated build script wasn't written by me, I've just borrowed it. We have do thank Emdek for it. :)
That would probably be a good idea to have a build script included in a tutorials section, along with some other tips and tricks for Plasma.
There's a forum here on kde-look, I guess it could be a place to start asking or posting about this. - Oct 26 2009

If a previous version of Daisy was installed, the Plasma desktop needs to be restarted. This can be done by typing in a terminal "kquitapp plasma-desktop" and after that "plasma-desktop". Or by simply logging out and logging back in. Otherwise Daisy will not update. You might also want to run "kbuildsycoca4". Check if you have done this.

OK, if you really want to, you can add Daisy to the panel. But it's not recommended.

That option for tooltips is going to be added in KDE 4.4, re-implementing it in Daisy and using custom widgets for tooltips, like it is done in STasks, would not be very correct.

It is being actively developed and will continue to be, with the help of everyone who wishes to contribute. :)

I'm running Kubuntu, and Daisy runs without a problem.
What method have you used to install Daisy? Was it compiled from source or did you used a binary package?
Looking at the crash report it looks as it could be related with the taskmanager library. - Oct 26 2009

Hi

The minimum size for Daisy when added to panel is now of 8 pixels. I believe this should be enough.
Daisy isn't really meant to be added to the panel and it looses a lot of features when doing this. In fact, that option is there only for compatibility. Daisy is designed to be added to the desktop and it will behave like a panel when in linear dock role.

Hi there.

Adding a keyboard shortcut for that task should be possible. Will look into it.

Middle mouse button click will now do this. Open the Daisy configuration window>Launchers>Advanced tab and configure this behavior there.

A new background (mach-2) for linear dock role was now added. Daisy can use its own backgrounds or use the Plasma theming system (it's compatible with Plasma panel backgrounds). I shall include more themes for Daisy and maybe replace others. But it would be nice to see Daisy being themed by Plasma themes as it would look more integrated in a Plasma desktop. This task is up to the Plasma themers.

Thank you for your work, if you can contact me with details of the package you've made or if you can update it to version 0.0.4.21 I would gladly include your work in the download page.

That's true. Daisy should had been a real container from the start. But I've had some issue with that approach, when adding plugins to the dock.
It's true that it would be nice to be able to add an applet like STasks, but I believe that a task manager is an important part of a dock, for that reason this has to be included in Daisy.
I'll keep developing it the way it is now, but it might undergo a redefinition and a complete re-write. I'll have to peek in your Containment, if that's OK with you. ;)

OpenOffice.org components have different alias (WindowClass), this is related to how the application was developed.
The alias for draw and calc are "VCLSalFrame.DocumentWindow" and for impress it's "VCLSalFrame". There's no way of controlling all of OpenOffice.org windows with a single launcher, due to the approach used to identify OpenOffice.org windows. KDE applications follow standards and will work with Daisy without any issue.

Currently I don't think it's possible to bypass that option in Plasma. The dock can only auto-center when the widgets are unlocked.

This is a feature that could be included in Plasma, the ability to bypass locked widgets.

Hi,

It would be simpler to read and edit plain .desktop files, but Daisy uses special launchers as we need to know one important entry for the application (the alias). Also, it needs to have an entry for the action launcher.
What do you miss having in the Daisy launchers? The workpath entry?

Daisy isn't meant do go on a panel, but on the desktop. When adding it to the panel it will only show a single launcher. The option to add it as panel is only there for compatibility reasons.
Seems to be resizing accordingly: http://i33.tinypic.com/nv7ho0.png
But again, it's not meant to go on the panel.

Just add Daisy to your desktop, right-click on it and change to "Linear dock" role, it will behave like a panel.

Right now it behaves like a normal applet. Yes, currently to popup over other windows it needed to be a panel-like applet. There are some issues doing that, the custom backgrounds for instance are a big issue as most of them use transparency, so composite would be needed. Experimenting on that right now.

Sorry, this update took a little longer than usual. But we are here to stay. :) - Sep 25 2009

Sure, can make the minimum size of launchers smaller. The image file gives a 404.
One question, you've added Daisy to the desktop not the panel, correct? - Sep 25 2009

Plasma 4 Extensions by Lechio 573 comments

To add other applets, like kickoff, Daisy would have to be turned into a real container. There are issues doing that. The use of custom backgrounds for instance... Viable options would be to re-implement kickoff as a Daisy plugin or use the classic KDE menu.

Hi,

This update took a little longer than usual, but that doesn't mean it's not maintained.

Comparing Daisy with the Mac OS X dock is not really a fair comparison as of yet, Daisy has only a few months of development. Animations are still on a second plan, right now the main focus is features. A lot is still missing, plugins and a lot more features are planned to be included before working on the candy part.

Covering windows is a planned feature, but it's complicated to implement in Daisy, the way it is now, as it behaves like a normal applet not a panel. So, working on that but no promises as when it will be implemented. :)

Plasma 4 Extensions by Lechio 573 comments

Hi there.

Making Daisy reappear after the mouse touches a screen corner is very easy to implement, in fact it can already track the mouse position when it's hidden. The hard part is to make an applet cover application windows. It can be done with a panel-like applet in Plasma, but not for a normal applet like Daisy, that uses transparent backgrounds. This can only be done on composite capable systems, working on this to find a nice solution for it.

Added option to display tooltips for inactive launchers. :)

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Regards.

Hi there. Thanks for the comment and feedback.

Not covering windows is not really a bug but a feature that is not yet implemented. This has been requested on a few other occasions, working on that to find the best solution for it.

Yes, updates and bugfixes are planned and being worked on. Just today the developer preview release was updated. :)
Will update and increase version as soon as the taskbar plugin is completely functional.

This is alpha code, meaning that not all features are implemented yet and the ones that are now may suffer heavy modifications in future. Definitely not something stable yet. - Sep 06 2009

Currently the drawers and the applet cannot cover any application windows, therefore, instead of drawers, a plain menu is used to represent multiple application instances in that situation. This is something temporary until a better solution is found.

Will correct that behavior of drawers not being on top of other plasmoids.

The key combination is something implemented in Plasma, I believe. If it doesn't work, complain to the Plasma team. :)

There are three ways of installing Daisy:

- By downloading the source and compiling it. It has an install script to make this task easier, consult the INSTALL file, as advised by rickz, for details. This option will require some development packages to be installed on the system.

- By downloading a binary package.

- By using a package manager.
