While some find this funny, I don't think it is a good thing to have distributed on an offical KDE website! It is a clear case of copyright violation. We don't want the great Bill Waterson to be angry at us! Open Source (GPL, etc) are built on the strength of copyright. We take GPL violations very seriously, but guess what, they are really Copyright violations! So let us not support copyright violations of any kind!!!!!!! - Oct 16 2001

To get the buttons and scrollbar to work correctly, you must also install the aqua style. The tarball contains two subdirectories. You must go into each of them and install them (see the readme in each). The one ending in style contains scrollbar information. - Oct 16 2001

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by detsaot 23 comments

I think that this should definitely replace the ksplash included with KDE. This is (IMHO) much nicer and gives the user a much better first experience. Of course, it needs to be easy on network connections (remote X11/vnc sessions), but that can be worked out, I think.

I will see about creating RedHat packages for this. Another idea: How about a replacement for kdm that gives it a more unique look. Have a look at the login screens for Windows XP (I know, I know; but it IS a good example)... I would LOVE to see someone make a kdm replacement that has that type of look to it! - Oct 16 2001

nice screensaver!
this will realy fool many people ;)

p.s.: it will be cool to have a "kde style" screensaver like the win2k "logon" saver, you know that jumping logo, it will be cool to have a "k desktop environment" logo as jumping screensaver ...

generally i think that kde has not enough screensavers, so every screen saver, makes the number greater.

Your prefix will be "/usr", as Mandrake treats KDE as essential system binaries (vs. "optional" and sticking them in/opt/kde2).

I figured it out - the proper prefix for Mandrake 8.x, that is. Mandrake doesn't keep KDE in /opt/kde2, but rather treasts it as essential system binaries, this spread out through /usr. So for Mandrake 8.x users (don't know about 7.x, probably the same, though) set your prefix to /usr. To wit:
./configure --prefix=/usr -
make -
su -
make install - - Oct 15 2001

You don't have to uncompress the tarball. Select Look&Feel/Icons and point to the iKons tarball.
If you really want to uncompress

Forgive me for possibly missing something obvious. After uncompressing the tarball, and choosing Look & Feel/Icons and pointing to the iKons directory, I do not see the theme in my list of icon themes.

Do I have to uncompress these files in a certain location? Which file within the tarball should I "point" to when choosing "Install New Theme"? index.desktop?

Windows 2000 Icon Theme

The old argument that KDE looks too much like Windows really has some footing now :)

Personally I always considered the windows look to be ugly. Sure, it's serious, but it's also totally uninspring. I think the current look of KDE 2.x is mostly right. If you're going to change it, change it into something that looks cool (like the MacOS X look and feel) instead of into something that looks worse.

Having said that, I suddenly have this urge to install linux on my mom's PC and run KDE with this iconpack on it, accompanied by wine to run Office 97. I wonder how long it would take her to figure out it's not windows.

I compiled and did a make install. The only errors I got was a warning that some directive was a GCC extension, but it appeared to compile fine. Running a make install reports something about 'nothing to be done for install-exec-am' and 'nothing to be done for install-data-am'. It doesn't appear in KControl's style list.

Windows 2000 Theme

KDE 2 Themes by asifalirizwaan 28 comments

I say good job. Guys, loose the childish "winbloze suxs" attitude. You only hurt *NIX with such an immature attitude. If we want Linux - and other Unices - to succeed on the Desktop (and they can), we need Linux/UNIX desktops to act/look what those users already know - Windows. Not everbody out there using computers - or using Linux, for that matter - makes computers their lives. Some people simply want to use the darn thing. And once you get used to using one OS, making the transition to another that acts different, looks different, and has different applications can be quite unsettling. I, too, used the Windows 2000 KDE1 theme, and liked it. It was something familiar.

Now, personally, I think Windows 200 is a fine-looking OS. Flame me if you want, but that doesn't change the fact that it looks PROFESSIONAL. I like it's color scheme. In fact, at this very moment I'm using a Windows 2000-espe color scheme right now on KDE (soft blue backgroun, tan widgets, fading menus) by golly, I like a lot. It's clean, functional, and professionl looking.

If you wanna know what's ugly, just try to look at XP's Luna. :o) - kudos to the Luna theme developer, too, for a nice job.

This is a good theme, and gives the Linux newbie a familiar look and feel to ease the pain of transition (bigger than you might think). GREAT JOB! - Oct 14 2001
