> A setting to control width. I made my own (boring, white text, all transparent) button, but I don't need it as wide as the applet makes it.

It would be more intuitive to have your button width reduced to the size you want!

like if you want your button size to be of 100 pixels wide, create a transparent new image in Gimp with "100 pixel" wide!

The applet is only arranging according to the size of the applet! so, please reduce the width of your button. - Jun 14 2005

I'm not seeking your approval! If you don't like windows, it's your choice. I like KLaunch button. I'm sharing with love to all KDE users by sharing it with GPL license!

Dare not tell others what they should or should not do! You are crossing the limit of individual freedom!

I did not create this Button FOR YOU! and I'm not begging you to use it! If you don't like it don't use it! If you like it use it!

>What's the goals of this app? Made KDE windoze-like?

Yes, and no! The GOAL is evidently FREEDOM to Choose any look and feel for KButton!

If a user like Start button, we appreciate it!

You know what Love means? respecting and appreciating others' freedom is love! Let them have what they want!

>I think changing background color of kmenu button is intuitive and users will think it's a special thing - no need to be retangular or have any labels like 'start'.

Again, we respect your choice of not having a rectangular button! But you also have to respect other's freedom to choose and have a button as they deem likeable!

And YOU are not the ONLY KDE user in this Big world! There are many who would love 'Start' button on kicker!

We should respect their wishes and feeling too! - Jun 13 2005

well almost everything is Windows like. KDE is mostly Windows like + Mac OSX, on steroids!

So what!? Does that mean KDE developers are making KDE windows like? NO! They are helping to realize an IDEAL desktop for all and free!

KDE is here to help REALIZE the dream of a "FREE (opensource), functional, attractive, and useful Desktop for ALL!"

The problem with you "windows hating kde users" is that, you don't respect other people's freedom of choice and ideas!

You (windows hating users) are so "Arrogant" that you don't want others to let them have their own IDEAS and CHOICE available! You are trying to enslave others! and you have no right to tell people what to like or dislike. It's an individual's freedom to choose anything! respect it! that's what freedom is all about!

Siraj! you are doing the RIGHT thing just like our cool KDE developers are doing by improving KDE tremendously with nice features!

If I had known good programming, I would made XPDE work! :D

The whole issue is not just about LOOKS and Feel but The MOST BASIC NEED of MAN! and that is Freedom! FREEDOM to use, modify and share with your friends, and family! - Jun 13 2005

> you seem to really want to be heard and have your issues addressed.

I want KDE to be fully functional and eyecandy and certified as 'Just Work!' Desktop Environemt (by the KDE users ;). You know I dream of KDE+Unix on every Desktop since KDE 1.1 (redhat 6.1). It's been 7 years now! Still the default install of KDE+Unix won't satisfy the average desktop user.

The Default KDE applications are not making the Desktop dream come true :(

1. krec - can't record (alternates khdrecord)

2. noatun/kaboodle - can't play vcd/dvd and streaming media (alternates kaffeine)

3. kmenu (deliberately designed by the kicker developers to NOT allow any user to fully customize it :( You won't allow any KDE user to have his/her own Menu items say like Windows Start->Programs->etc. (unfortunately no alternate kmenu applet yet! I hope someone will come up with a better Idea!)

4. a Rectangular themeable button: to woo the windows users (leading to the corporates and the hardware device manufacturer to release device drivers and softwares for Linux, forced by the large Unix user base.) (alternate: kbfx)

5. Default KDM look: yuck, the new kdm theme improves it but by default theme is disabled :(

To sum my "ISSUES"

1. KDE on every desktop
2. KDE fully functional
3. KDE Attractive (with animations+styles+themes etc.)
4. The Default KDE applications must do all which they are supposed to do:
5. Less burden on the desktop user! (asking too much info, dialogs are bothersome)

Like a Video player (noatun) should also play embedded media, streaming media, DVDs, VCDs, etc.

A desktop user would find it very difficult to find an application which will do a specific task, like kaffeine, kmplayer, etc. plays DVDs and real streams.

So, Aaron S., I've been very patience for past 7 yeas waiting to see KDE just work! but still with KDE 3.4.1, it is not :(

But I have high hopes with KDE 4.x! - Jun 12 2005

You know I like you! And I am not using any tricks to make you work on it! If by any chance you feel insulted, then I am really, really sorry!

There are 2 things which make people make Exuses:

1. Laziness
2. Dis-Interest

You are not the Lazy kind but the 'Disinterested' one!

I Love and appreciate all KDE developers' endeavors! But you people discard many ideas cause it takes a different approach than a standard one (according to KDE standards).

for example, Text in the Image can be hardcoded and placed into individual folders like:

themes/en
themes/gb
themes/ar
themes/hi
themes/hu
themes/xx

each folder will have 'Language specific button image'

I'm suggesting using pixmaps for each locale, and you're thinking of using 'i18n' text beside the icon!

Pixmap is more superior from the eyecandy point-of-view, and 'i18n' text is easier for developers to code!

This approach looks awkward to you, but it will work if implemented! - Jun 12 2005

some things to keep in mind:

- right to left desktops

What's different about Right-To-Left Desktops? one can create nice button for that too. Artists are pretty fast in that!.

For each position like Top, Bottom, Let, Right, Above, Below, Right-To-Left text, Top-to-bottom text, Bottom-to-top text, animated text all can be created. kbfx is flexible!

- translations

Ok, we can Have LINUX or MENU or KDE beside the icon. KDE and Linux require no translation and 'Menu' can be translated easily. Creating 'Translated Launch' button is also possible. A Few people with Translation can make it work!

- there is nothing that says the K menu is on the left.

And there nothing that says K is required! And I did not get you.

> i have no real beef with rectangular buttons, but the above 3 points are why it's not realistic to go with something like what you have here.

Thanks regarding rectangular button, but the 3 points are more of EXCUSES than practical implementation! Lazy people make miraculous Excuses! Remember, where there is a will, there's a way!

Talking of Realistic thing, did you ever tried creating a nice rectangular k button. And Artists are real cool in Translating and making things happen.

> that said, we do have text-aside-button support in kicker in SVN now.

Good to know that it support text-aside-button, but you KNOW, KDE inherently is UGLY, You don't make anything with a slightest IDEA of making it Themeable. Out of users' outcry you add themeing!

Why is that Default KDE apps are crippled things?

example:

1. krec
2. kmenu (configurability)
3. noatun (see kaffeine/kplayer/kmplayer)
4. kuickshow (see showFoto and gwenview)

With classic submenu type menu, we have to move our mouse more than we need to move the mouse in a 2 panel menu.

it seems that you hate xp menu, but the reason you are saying to avoid it is not valid.

The recent apps can be around 10-15, and we can have our custom apps on the side of the recent apps, which will reduce the mouse movement a lot.

even we can have shortcuts for applications. - Jun 08 2005

Have you ever used Windows XP, SuperStoned? I guess not! I have used it and I know how 2 pane menu is better than 1 pane. Applications, Shortcuts, Recent Documents, Devices, etc. are just 1 click away.

in Classic menu (single pane style) finding application shortcuts are very annoying.

Oh Please, Please Siraj! make it by Default 1 panel, but allow 2 pane menu, so that we can convert XP users to Linux/Unix!

If windows ideas were that bad, then why KDE people have created the 'System' icon like 'My Computer', because they need to attract the Windows users who are in Millions, unlike Unix lusers who are in just thousands! ;) - Jun 08 2005
