hi fabio,
nice theme! i really like the aurora engine (despite the bugs mentioned by UbuntuLee).
one thing i'd like to know is what font you're using. really fits the rest.

oh, and where could i change the general icon size? it seems your theme makes many of my icons a bit too small (i'm talking about gtk-stock icons used in media players e.g. or even icons in other progs like ooffice). smaller is fine in general, but this seems a bit too small for my taste. - Jul 27 2008

i haven't tested your theme yet but i just wanted to say that i strongly approve the idea of porting elegant brit to different theme-engines. pixmap-themes sometimes look great, but they have certain issues...

anyways, as soon as your first release candidate is out, i'll give it a shot. - Jul 14 2008

if you like you can link to my xfwm4-theme (just to have it all in one place).

anyways, one more thing i noticed in ff2: when i hover or click a link in the bookmarks-toolbar, there is a bright area around the button, that appears on the hover. you can see it in the screenshot you can get here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/2q82ty - Jun 08 2008

hi, just wanted to say that i created a port of your metacity theme to xfwm4.

great theme, i like it. (one of the better mac-ish themes i have seen.)

anyways, on thing you might have noticed yourself already: in your metacity theme the close-button is 1px higher than the other two... - Jun 08 2008

yes, i would say so. you simply have to edit the themerc in the xfwm4 folder of the theme.

modify the line "button_layout=O|HMC" to your liking. i don't know the keys by heart (although i think "S" is for the shade-button) but i'm sure you can find that somewhere (e.g. by having a look into a theme that has a shade-button). - Jun 03 2008

yeah, of course you're right - my criticism wasn't exactly constructive or helpful.

in general i like that the theme is very gentle, but i guess progress-bars in a single color (maybe instead just a very gentle pink) could suite the theme better - i can't remember seeing gradients anywhere else in your theme... - May 13 2008

hmmm, lets say i'm not a huge fan of very small buttons (i mean: from a pragmatic point of view, i want to be able to hit them even after a few beers ;) ).

i just found this (http://www.xfce.org/xfwm4-theme-howto/) and they say that you can produce gradients with pngs overlaying the xpms(it seems that you can't have gradients with xpm-only -> blockiness). unfortunately my first experiments with this failed. i will maybe take another shot tomorrow, as i have to leave now. - May 08 2008

hmm, "intended". i wouldn't say that. problem is that smoothness (especially with circles) is not that easy to achieve at such a low resolution (23x23px).

i added a gaussian blur at a very low level to smoothen' it up, but i can try to do apply that effect even more.

does anyone have any other suggestions to make circles of low resolution (in xpm format) smoother? - May 08 2008

ok, i figured that xfdesktop out. if you could include those lines (i tried to use the colors of the theme, but of course adjust them if you like) in your gtkrc file of hemoglobinus that would be great (at least for xfce-users):

style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 75
base[NORMAL] = "#f3f3f3"
base[SELECTED] = "#e0d4d9"
base[ACTIVE] = "#f3f3f3"
fg[NORMAL] = "#000000"
fg[SELECTED] = "#d71b72"
fg[ACTIVE] = "#000000"
}

hi, i just wanted to tell you that i ported your metacity theme to xfwm4 (although "port" is not entirely true, since i had to redo almost all parts), so that all xfce-users out there can enjoy your theme too! - May 07 2008

hi, i really like your theme, one issue though is the really low contrast when e.g. selecting a file on the desktop (using xfce) while it's a bit better in the filemanager (thunar).

furthermore on the xfce-panel when there's a window that demands focus the text first blinks and then turns black which renders it unreadable until you give that window the focus again.

last but not least this theme has the same issue i have criticised about (quite) all the other good pixmap themes out there: when using alt-tab to cycle applications in xfce, the selected window cannot be seen.
and the standard selected button in a gtk-dialog (which is usually marked by a dotted rectangle) is not visible at all.

anyhow, with a few of these issues tackled i think this could be an awesome theme for everyday use! - May 06 2008

GTK2 Themes by fmrbpensador 283 comments

hmhm, at the moment i'm using parts of elegant brit and some murrine-theme, which enables me to have the default-button-selection-rectangle and the window-switcher working. but in the end this is only a workaround.

have you considered asking xfce-devs about the window-switcher (this seems to be a very general problem with pixmap-themes)?

anyhoo, good to know you're still around, cause i think elegant brit has been one of the most innovative and influencing themes here lately. - Apr 14 2008

hi, just wanted to let you know that there are no problems with elegant brit and sunbird when using the newest version (0.8)

haven't been able to test 0.7 though (which is what's gonna be in hardy). maybe if someone else can verify that 0.7 works as well you can simply forget about the bug because it seems to be more on the mozilla- than on the gtk-side.

(more important to me is the application-switcher [alt-tab] that i mentioned earlier ;) ) - Apr 09 2008

hi,
just wanted to say that your theme unfortunately bears the same problems as i already discovered with elegant brit.

if you use xfces window-switcher (alt-tab) there is no indication on the window-switcher itself which window is currently active.

also the button that is selected as a standard (e.g. if you delete a file using shift+del there is "cancel" and "delete" with no indication what will happen if i just press enter).

for me those are the only two annoying issues that will, in the long run, make me switch to a different theme. (which is a pain, because i really like both your approach and that of elegant brit.)

any thoughts how that could work? - Apr 08 2008

alright, found out that this happens with all pages that don't define their background-color, so i guess there's nothing that can be done (apart from defining your websites bgcolor obviously...) - Apr 07 2008

i'm concerned by the same issues. furthermore on certain pages (e.g. http://squentin.free.fr/gmusicbrowser) the background color is changed from white to darkgrey and that renders the page almost unreadable.

any way around that all? - Apr 07 2008

hi, just another comment on the theme.
maybe this has been discussed previously, but when i use alt+tab (window switcher) in xfce, i do not see (in the window switcher itself) a frame around the icon of the application, which is a bit annoying.
a similar thing is with dialogs, where i can't see the default option (which is, whatever happens when i just press enter).

a fix for that would be greatly appreciated. - Mar 19 2008

sorry, i guess my last posting was a bit unclear. to answer your question: it only has to do with the internal layout specifications of gmusicbrowser. so nothing to worry about for you, i just wanted to inform everyone who might use this app.

and to clarify one more thing, with "for each layout that you would like to have this effect you should add the line i posted in the affected section." i meant:
"you should add the line i posted SOMEWHERE in the affected section." - Mar 16 2008

you'll find the standard layouts in /usr/share/gmusicbrowser/layouts and your personal ones in ~/.gmusicbrowser/layouts. these layout files can contain more than one layout. for each layout that you would like to have this effect you should add the line i posted in the affected section.

for more (and maybe clearer) words on layouts in gmusicbrowser, see the official documentation: http://squentin.free.fr/gmusicbrowser/layout_doc.html - Mar 16 2008

hi, i just got a short but interesting piece of information for all of you, who - like me - use the extraordinary gmusicbrowser. since this application uses a standard border of 5 pixels that doesn't really fit the melting of window decoration and menu bar in elegant brit.
to override this standard-setting you have to add the line "Window = borderwidth=0" to the layout you're using. - Mar 15 2008

GTK2 Themes by fmrbpensador 283 comments

well, i was thinking for a while whether i should report this bug (mainly because it's not even very important to me but for reasons of completeness or integrity i thought i'll mention it).

in firefox 2.0.0.12 if you use the bookmarks-toolbar with folders and you click on one and go down the list, the title of the folder just stays black on black. (as long as you just hover the folder/link in the bookmarks toolbar everything is fine and readable with blue on black.)

anyways, don't invest too much time on that - i guess there really are more important things in life ;) - Mar 15 2008

i see, so i misinterpreted your comment on Freddan80.
anyway, in case you can/want to share that folder icon (e.g. if you made it yourself just like the menu-icon) i would be happy to use it. although it's close to apples icon it has something about it that i really like. - Mar 12 2008

actually this issue has been brought up before quite many times. i would suggest you read the messages that are already in the comment section regarding the icon set.

hi, just wanted to comment on your xfwm4-theme. i really like it cause it goes so well with elegant brit.

the main reason why i don't use it are the white window borders. if you have two windows overlapping (and in case you don't have compiz or anything else enabled for shadows behind the windows) it's hard to distinguish the two. i guess in combination with compiz that works out well but for normal xfce it's simply too confusing. - Mar 11 2008

alright, i figured out that the "bug" is more likely within the cpu-graph-plugin. depending on its settings it crashes (or doesn't), so you can forget about that one. - Mar 08 2008
Elegant Brit

GTK2 Themes by fmrbpensador 283 comments

ok, basically if you run sunbird everything seems to be fine at first.
if you e.g. double-click a day to add a "New Event" the dialogue-window for that kind of opens but stays white and then sunbird is frozen and the only way to continue is to kill it.

one more bug that i noticed is with the xfce-panel. it seems that the cpu-graph plugin eats 100% of the cpu if i use your panel.rc. i really don't know why that is, but this occurs not immediately when adding the plugin, but after a reboot. (the other plugins that i'm using are actually doing fine; volume, network, battery, orage). - Mar 07 2008

i like the theme, BUT it produces quite many bugs (e.g. sunbird crashes).

i still use your panel.rc, it's quite nice.

one thing i'd like to add is that i don't like the fact that window-borders are white. actually if you have two windows overlapping it's not very practical not to see the borders properly. - Mar 04 2008
