The new ones look well better (appart from the refresh button which looks far to crunched up. As for suggestions, the KDE menu button looks a bit darker than it should and the cog application one looks a little bit undifined. As for extra icons, I think a few for the different image types (the ones which distribute with KDE are a bit messy) and maybe something for the dreaded dll files. A virtualy perfect scheme otherwise. Nice job!!! (Reminds me of Preemo sceme by Scrow) - Oct 20 2001

I've made some new toolbar icons. You can find them on the 'iKons' website in the screenshot section.

I've never used .NET or XP myself, but when I spotted this, I gave it a look because I wanted to see how it would look.. It's very clean and functional - almost professional looking with no extra distractions to get in the way - very easy to understand what is chosen and has great feedback The only thing I did was turn off the top menubar thing.. that annoys me to no end. But to the author: Thanks for a great clean style! - Oct 20 2001

Ok, this being said.. I really like this style :P I've tried qnx, liquid and others and this one has very revolutionary menu's which is cool.. The only thing is that the other widgets aren't as revolutionary and thereby don't feel so good (to me anyway).. they feel mostly like some motif variation to me. I've never seen/used any xp/.net apps, but I think the widgets can be improved a lot! In five words: Keep up tha good work! with good widgets this is a top notch style! ;) - Oct 19 2001

Hey, I don't care myself, but I'm sure some people would be offended/annoyed by the f word in the icq window of the screen shot. I drop f-bombs all day long, but I wouldn't want my boss looking over my shoulder and seeing that. That is the kind of thing that makes people think Linux is for a bunch of teenage punks.

And sorry for bitching in this particular wallpaper comment area, it's just that this is the first one I've noticed.

Thanks for your generous ratings, I can see that people like my wallpapers. Perhaps there is an interest in higher resolution pictures or a blend of these images (one image, multiple colors)? I'd like to make more wallpapers or perhaps even a theme in the future, what kind of style do you think KDE needs (modern/classy/trendy)? Let me know what you think, perhaps I can do something with it.

I am not the author of the theme, just another user. PLEASE don't go Windows-like theme bashing. Some people like the look, and this particular theme is VERY nice, clean, and functional. If MS happened to produce something that was clean, nice, and functional, good on 'em (now they just need to work on stability and security :o) ). The look is nice, clean, and functional whether or not it was created by MS. You did a noble thing by congratulating the author, but don't put down someone's efforts to make a theme that a lot of people like. If one doesn't like it based on a bug or something, by all means report it. If one doesn't like it merely because of personal prefence, don't waste bandwith. Some people are gonna like, some people are gonna hate it. If you don't like merely because it resembles Windows, don't waste bandwidth telling the author and people who like it so. Just press the back button and forget about it, and post a comment on a theme you do like. Let's all be nice and polite. :o) - Oct 19 2001

Nothing against the programmer here, but I just hate the Windows look, that's just one of the reasons I love linux so I don't particularly care for this theme. I like Mosfet's much better. To clee:

I've noticed that your drawPopupMenuItem seems to draw men icons in programs such as Konqeror as checkable even if they are not. The problem seems to be that the function is being invoked with checkable always TRUE. The end result is that items in the menu, such as "Edit/Select All" which do not have icons get a 'check' box when the area to the left should in fact be grey and empty. I'm obsessive compulsive and this irks me no end :-) Nice KStyle though! - Oct 18 2001

KDE 3.x Splash Screens by detsaot 22 comments

I've had this same problem happen to me a few times as well. Definitely, the splash screen should take over the screen until the entire desktop is truly ready for use, but it should also go away once the desktop it ready to go! :) Still a very good ksplash replacement though. A couple of things:
I would like the executable to support parameters for the various options (don't display icons, don't display status bar, etc.).. that way, for lower resolution or remote display, (with some good shell scripting) you can turn those off for those users!
Also, would it be possible to install itself as like ksplash-ml, back up the old ksplash executable to like ksplash.original and then create a symlink from ksplash - ksplash-ml. This would make packaging alot easier as it wouldn't be writing over another packages files. (I could add those scripts to the %post-install% section of the RPMs). - Oct 18 2001

Your welcome! I struggled with it for a while, and then read the comments about checking the prefix. I poked around for KDE, and found the binaries in /usr/bin and and some directory called /usr/local/kde/lib/. Tried /usr/bin and /usr/local/kde/lib/ for a prefix, but no jow. Then I remembered seeing somwhere about using /usr for some other program, and decided to try it. Bingo! Yee-haw!!!

Also, Mandrake users can get an RPM from pclinuxonline.com, under the Download section.

.... i definetly like it, but in my opinion some things should be changed....

I personally do not like much cartoons in my icons, since I use linux in my job, not in my spare time, and it's not very nice to be found out by your boss pressing a "rocket" icon to run a command. It looks like I'm playing games!

Definetly the linux kde desktop needs a serious/proffessional look as well. Would you be able to create different icon themes for both types of people? You're definetly good doing your job.

Hope you take this into account

Thanks

Hi there, it seems that your "NT-like" mode fails using it as screensaver. It works using the "test" option in the kcontrol menu, but it fails to display the small window once the screensaver acts (it displays only the hand).

I could test it only in the mandrake distribution, but hopefully you'll be able to reproduce the error in any distribution you use.

Keep on like that. Good work. My boss prefers me working with linux though.... :-) - Oct 18 2001

Sorry about that. I found how to 'configure' it now... At least in my Mandrake 8.1 distribution it's just adding a new *.desktop file at: (whichever your configuration)

$(HOME)/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers

or

$(HOME)/.kde/share/applnk/.hidden/ScreenSavers

If you want to add it as root, do the same at:

/usr/share/applnk.......

I think the theme is great. It's simple, clean and makes the desktop easy to manage. It would be great to package it with kde3.0 release. I do have one suggestion. Can you make the radio button's smaller. They seem to get cut off on the right side on most of the web pages that I have seen, including KDE-Look.org.

you can try analysing the images in /usr/share/apps/ksplash/pics/ .. You might need to cut the image to pieces that way, but it'll work..

I don't have any experience it anyway.. or you may use the kontrol center module of ksplashml (if you installed that one, it's on this site in the "other" section) but I run mandrake8.1 too, and the module didn't work with me :(

I would go with changing the pics in the pics directory if I were you :-) - Oct 17 2001
