I know, it's hard to keep a good balance between style and use. That's why there are two versions (one more conservative than the other), and I always recommend clearlooks-colors instead of Shiki when it comes to no-nonsense/serious business type of needs. - Sep 07 2008

The problem shouldn't exist in the conservative "Clearlooks" version. There is also a way to fix it in the murrine SVN version, if you follow the instructions indicated in lines 36-38. It's set up this way due to aesthetic reasons, but I guess if it was possible to configure the murrine engine to use the through border as part of the slider while keeping the same stylish look, that would be best. - Sep 07 2008

I've never tested the icons in KDE, since they're specifically designed for GNOME/XFCE, but every icon should be available up to 256x256 via scalable SVG's. - Sep 07 2008

Mmm seems to happen because of the setting (through-border = 3) that new scrollbars use. Seems more of a firefox bug, since such a setting shouldn't have that effect. It's pretty isolated and doesn't seem like a noticeable/harmful bug, so I don't think it warrants removing the new scrollbars.

If you do want to remove it, try using the clearlooks version, or change lines 36-38 as indicated. - Sep 07 2008

I wouldn't mind an alternate metacity, but I think without the stripe, it would be very difficult to tell active windows apart. Also, the stripe sort of gives you an idea of where to click for resizing/moving, so I doubt I'll add another metacity unless I can come up with a better design. - Sep 06 2008

Does this happen with the latest version, that says "Welcome" instead? I did some spacing fixes for that one. If that still looks odd, to you, I'll take a look and see if I can further improve it.

Ok, this is not a Shiki issue. The same behavior occurs with every other theme I've tried (even without the tango theme). D4X uses a flat background for its tray icon, but it is obviously more noticeable with hybrid themes. The best way to fix it would be to report a bug to the developers of D4X. - Sep 05 2008

ok, I found a workaround if you use metacity. You can't remove the top line easily, but you can choose its color!

Open the gtkrc file, and go to the section that says "metacity-frame". Where it says "bg[SELECTED] = " put the color you'd like (a dark gray or something) and the top stripe will have that color. - Sep 05 2008

great update! you might want to try working with 22x22 icons instead of 24x24. That way, you can then just run a command similar to "find . -name "*.png" -execdir convert -bordercolor Transparent -border 1x1 "{}" "{}" \;" to add a 1px border and create 24x24 icons. That way you can include both resolutions easily, and your icons will look crystal clear no matter what. - Sep 05 2008

Shiki sacrifices a bit of usability for more elegance, so small things like that might happen. I'm adding more comments to the theme, however, so changing lines 36,37,38 to the values indicated would give you full-sized scrollbars. I'm also adding a "colorize_scrollbar = FALSE" line to the scrollbar section, so uncommenting that would give you gray scrollbars as well. Also, the "Clearlooks" version would give you a more conservative approach, but I'm trying to make the Murrine SVN version eye-candy friendly. - Sep 03 2008

Also, gray scrollbars instead of colored are in consideration, so I'll play around and see if it looks better. However, I don't think there's much inconsistency, since the metacity stripe + sliders + progressbars are colored, so scrollbars would be an extension of that widget set. - Sep 03 2008

I don't think I can separate the buttons from the text any further than I have already. You can try opening Arc-GDM.xml and replacing "<stock type="suspend"/>" for "<text>Shortened word for suspend in your language goes here</text>"

Perhaps another way would be making the font smaller? I don't really know how else to fix it right now. - Sep 02 2008

OK, I made some improvements. The "Options" button is now localized, and it's also clickable. Since it's clickable, you can access any missing function as well!

I also tried to adjust positioning as much as I could for the things you mentioned, so please try again and let me know if this fixes your issues. - Sep 02 2008

Thanks for the input!
I think I can improve the positioning and the "Options" translations.

As for the "GNOME-Colors OS", since it's a "brand" I think it should look the same across languages. Besides, I encourage people to change the GNOME-Colors text to match their distro's name (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc).

Um, what do you mean by 'Exit' button? Other than shutdown, etc I've never seen an exit button in a GDM. Would you care to elaborate? - Sep 02 2008

I'm very uncreative when it comes to wallpapers, so for now, I just went with something pleasant and easily customizable. copying values from compact-colors should make any theme compact, so that might work for you.

as for the firefox thing, it shouldn't be an issue since by default, firefox places the awesomebar/searchbar in the toolbars. if you have placed them in the menubar, you can easily drag it back into a toolbar if only for use with this theme. - Aug 30 2008

The palette is only there in case you're a developer and would like to know which colors are used by the icons. It's pretty much the same palette used by Tango, but with minor modifications. It just means that the colors mentioned are used in some way or another to draw the icons.

As for recoloring icons, that's not something that can be done easily. Each one of the four colorsets included are the result of weeks of development and manually recoloring of almost a thousand icons by hand. In the future I'll try to add more colorsets, but it will take a long time (specially since college started once again). - Aug 30 2008

Glad you like it!
As for the Ubuntu thing, I don't really think this theme should ever be under consideration for default. This is my side-project that gives up a bit of usability for more elegance. Until GNOME gives better support for dark/hybrid themes, easier-to-resize borders, and ability to move windows by clicking on menubar, this theme would be frustrating to inexperienced users.

tl;dr: Use Shiki-Colors for elegance, and use Clearlooks/Murrine/Nodoka-Colors for full usability and noob-friendliness. - Aug 28 2008

Murrine-Colors

GTK2 Themes by perfectska04 97 comments

The theme uses the murrine engine to render all the widgets. There is no scrollbar folder, or any other pixmap folder for that matter, since all the code is in the gtkrc file. If you want to change any scrollbar settings, there should be instructions for various settings inside the gtkrc file itself. - Aug 27 2008
