Thanks. Um, do you mean 8x8 emblems instead of mimetypes? as far as I know, GNOME doesn't use icons smaller than 16x16. Emblems are different, though, since you could have a 16x16 icon with an 8x8 emblem. There are a few 8x8 emblems included, but there are no plans for more. Most emblems are rather detailed, so dumbing them down to 8x8 would make them unrecognizable and defeat the purpose. - Aug 26 2008

That's actually a feature of the murrine engine. However, you shouldn't see them, since this theme doesn't use murrine other than for progressbars and treeviews and even then, transparecy of that kind is disabled. - Aug 25 2008

Yes, there are a few bugs with firefox and there is no current fix for them. As for virtualbox, etc, these are KDE apps, not GTK so they won't be themed by a GTK theme. - Aug 25 2008

I've been told about this before, but it's not a GNOME-Colors bug. This happens with every icon theme, therefore it's a trash-applet bug.

I recommend using a panel height of 24 or 32 if possible. - Aug 23 2008

Ubuntu intrepid uses an unstable SVN version of the Murrine engine. This theme is not compatible with Murrine SVN. In the future, when the Murrine SVN is stable and widespread enough, I will update this theme to support it.

For now, I can't add support for SVN in this theme because some of the new options and settings are not backwards compatible, and the majority of people are using the stable Murrine engine.

Perhaps if the developer releases a more stable snapshot of Murrine SVN, I'll provide an alternate version designed for it. For now, you may want to try downgrading your murrine package, or using clearlooks-colors/nodoka-colors as a temporary replacement. - Aug 20 2008

Yes, It's been mentioned before. The wise/human version have switched colors in firefox's addressbar. This is a Firefox issue, since it has that behavior with certain colors for unknown reasons. I haven't found a workaround, but the brave/wine version should work fine. - Aug 18 2008

The idea for white/black and maybe even purple color sets is something I have planned for the future. However, I will be starting college once again next week, so I will have a lot less free time.

I'm also planning to redesign all my other artwork (GDM/GTK's/Wallpapers, etc), and help out with the Elementary icons project, so with those other obligations it's likely that I won't make any major updates for the next 2-3 months.

Also, to answer your question, I don't use any scripts or anything of the sort. Every recolored icon in the theme is done manually in inkscape, because I believe that yields the best quality. This is another reason why it will take some time until I can introduce a new palette of colors (due to the large quantity of icons). - Aug 18 2008

This is not a theme problem, it's a user/root permissions problem. It will happen to any theme/icons you download from the internet and install through the appearance preferences.

To fix this, there are two solutions:
-When installing a theme/icon set, install to usr/share/themes or usr/share/icons as root user, respectively.

- Or for an easier solution, run the following commands in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root - Aug 17 2008

I think they can't use GTK directly since it's nowhere near as cross-platform as xulrunner is. Consistency issues with themes will always exist with non GTK apps, but at least firefox is making a great effort (unlike openoffice, which looks horrible in GNOME). - Aug 16 2008

It works for me either way. My mail/google account is the same, perfectska04 at gmail.

Right now I'm working on refreshing some forgotten, ugly stock icons from GNOME that aren't yet in gnome-colors, these to be exact:
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7231/screenshotdx2.png

Once I'm done with that, I'll probably compile all the gnome-colors icons and syslinks (links mainly for distro-specific icon names) that are missing or can blend in with elementary without any change. Perhaps that could be my first contribution. - Aug 16 2008

Yes, I know what you mean. One of my computers has a 6600GT and it doesn't support widescreen framebuffers either. I don't know if there is a solution. The Nvidia drivers allow for aspect ratio GPU scaling (adding black bars to the sides), perhaps something similar exists for framebuffers. - Aug 15 2008

I think I could probably fix them If I used the same selected item bg/text scheme as clearlooks-colors. This would mean lighter base/selected/menuitem backgrounds and black text instead of white, but I guess there'd be people that would want the white selected text back. Since it's more of a personal taste thing and I don't mind either way, I'll just leave this suggestion here and if I hear enough complaints for either, I'll decide wether to make the change or not. The change would only affect the light portions of the theme, since the dark portions will always have light text. - Aug 15 2008

Thanks for the compliment! When I was working on improving the set, I made it a priority to have every icon render each resolution natively, so I spent a bit of time optimizing some of your elementary icons. I liked them enough that it would be a shame not to use them, so by fixing them I amassed some inkscape knowledge that made it easier to improve the rest of the theme.

Also, it would be great helping with elementary, if you don't mind. While I probably suck at drawing original icons, It comes easy to me to modify/enhance/resize existing ones. Besides, if you're planning to port elementary to GNOME's style, our themes could have a ton of icons in common (actions and apps, mostly) making development a lot faster for elementary. I think we use a different palette for green/red, but that's something easily fixed.

As for the licensing, thanks for letting me know. I knew GNOME icons used LGPL, but I just assumed Tango was the same (LOL, Psych major, not Law). Then again, there are probably only 4-5 tango icons left (and the search icon's small sizes are original icons), so that should not be too difficult to fix. - Aug 15 2008

Hi, I never noticed any slowdown, but you're right. The icon is unnecessarily large. I just reuploaded the file with a fixed icon (it's now 20kb as opposed to 20mb).

I also skimmed over the file sizes, and all the other icons seem fine. I might even save a MB or two off the download if I use inkscape's vacuum defs for all files, but I'm not sure how safe that command is. - Aug 15 2008

The first issue is more of a firefox bug than a theme bug. If you try for example, blue or red versions it will look just fine. For some reason, Firefox 3 will only use the highlight color "if it feels like it". If it thinks the color is too light, then it will use either a black selection background, or a white one. In this case, I think Firefox doesn't "like" the colors for the human/wise versions. - Aug 14 2008

Thanks for letting me know. I already found a solution to the problem. Since it's a very minor change, I'll silently reupload fixed files later tonight.

However, if you need to fix the error urgently, you can edit line 494 in the gtkrc file, replacing the "#D4D4D4" with @text_color. In any case, the files will surely be already fixed by tomorrow, so you can just redownload them then. - Aug 13 2008

Yes, there's nothing wrong. In an earlier update I flattened the toolbars. I never got around to updating the previews.

The themes are fairly modular and easy to modify (they even have line-by line instructions for most things)

If you want gradient toolbars, open the gtkrc file and remove the # in front of lines 369-377 and lines 505-515. Also, add a # in front of line 60.

Then, go to line 387 and change it from:
class "GtkToolbar" style "clearlooks-default"
to:

I've seen some tango icons for iceweasel, but I haven't seen them in any other resolution than 48x48. I could probably just use the firefox icon, but then that'd be confusing.

GTK2 Themes by perfectska04 659 comments

Hi, don't worry I'm working on a new version to fix these issues. The reason I'm taking my time, is because there are some critical firefox 3 bugs that I need to work around in order to get the look I want. I'm thinking if maybe it'd be easier to just include a userChrome.css file rather than try to accomodate to firefox. I'm also testing out a modified version without a dark menubar and larger (easier to resize) borders, so it's like developing two variants at once.

About the menu item, I've noticed as well. I'll test some border colors, but that's part of the icon theme, so I'll upgrade that when there's more content as well. - Aug 09 2008

Ok, registered to ubuntu-art lists, but I quite don't have any idea how to post a message, so I'll post my opinion here instead.

If the theme is to be considered for Ubuntu, however I would think that perhaps changing the menus to a light background (to fix any possible bugs) and a warmer bg color would make it fit better with the distro's palette.

Also, I'm sure that some of the people in that site could probably help with the metacity border issue. - Aug 07 2008

What looos awkward, the borders to the sides, or the border that joins the menu bar?

The borders to the sides, so far the only solution has been to make them 1px wide. This way it doesn't look bad.. As you say, coloring one border a different way and making it 2px wide would look a lot better, but I don't think I can do it without using pixmaps. Since if the color of the "highlight" you mentioned is changed, then there would appear a separator line around the menu bar and the metacity. If I try to cover up these lines, then windows that don't have menu bars will have those cover-up lines showing up

Then again, I'm not really too skilled with metacity, if someone else took a look at it they could probably find a way to make it work! - Aug 07 2008

Ok, I reuploaded it with the fixed roundness, and I also made the metacity 1px wide. While this is not a perfect solution to the borders, this will at least give a nicer illusion while I try to figure it out. Hopefully I can draw some lines to hide the dark borders.

As for the selected menu items, I'll give it some testing. I kind of like the current settings, so maybe I'll find a way make this work better, and leave an option in the file to easily make menuitems colored. - Aug 07 2008

I was actually planning on using a radius of 2, (since I also lowered the tabs' radius) but I must have forgotten it.

The latest murrine is used to render progressbars. If you look in the previews, the progressbars are qute different and a lot nicer than the ones provided by the default clearlooks. If you don't really care about such minor stuf, the alternate version (which doesn't use murrine) should be good enough.

As for the menubar/toolbars, I am thinking of better ways to integrate them. Hopefully I can get around it without using any pixmaps.

Mm could you further explain that last point you mentioned? about the borders meeting the light sections, perhaps a quick screenshot would make it easier to see what's wrong. - Aug 07 2008
KDE4 Oxygen new port for GNOME

GTK2 Themes by kimmik 48 comments

This new version is much better than before. You really are the best at working with the pixmap engine.

I think there's a few things I can point out, sorry if it's long but it'll probably save you some time looking for them:
- Tab backgrounds don't have the right light sources, they look like the same image was just flipped around. Also, I think oxygen's active tabs glow blue.
-Checkbutton backgrounds were fixed, but radiobuttons still have slightly off bg in corners.
-Optionmenu button has different arrows than rest of theme.
-In twf, the GtkCombo doesn't have the same nice button as the ComboboxEntry button.
-When progressbars are smaller than a certain %, they have a larger width than the progressbar background.
-In the new update, the buttons cut off the top and bottom of icons in the window-list. - Aug 07 2008
KDE4 Oxygen new port for GNOME

GTK2 Themes by kimmik 48 comments

It looks great!
just a few things that could make it more like oxygen:

-the corners of checkboxes/radiobuttons' background is slightly lighter than regular background.

-If I remember correctly, slider, checkboxes, combobox buttons and radiobuttons should glow blue when hovered.

-The corners of glowing buttons also seem to be of a slightly different background, and look somewhat streched.

Other than that, the theme itself is great, and perhaps the best port of Oxygen I've seen. Good job! - Aug 05 2008

I'm glad I've received positive feedback on the new folders. A lot of work went into designing them. Personally, I think the red version benefitted the most from the new design; I am now using it the most, even though it used to be the least appealing to me.

In case anyone wants to know, the original sources for the new folders is a mixture of elements from oxygen and mist icons, with gradients similar to the tried and true ones seen in os x's leopard folders. - Aug 05 2008
