Hi there,

Thanks for your reply not being angry or offended. :) I guess it depends on whether you're aiming for the LCD or an experienced computer user. I'd be curious to see how those same users would fare with the KAddressBook interface.

Personally, I don't want my KDE UI to look like a Wii or a PSP; I want it to be clean and functional, making good use of screen space, while still looking nice. I think the current KDE 3.5.x does this very well, and OSX is pretty good also. But, to each his own. :) Maybe you should consider working on Plasma for KDE 4. - Jul 16 2007
No offense intended; I respect the time and effort you put into this, but I feel like giving my feedback to hopefully help you make a better app.

The UI is really bad. It is completely inconsistent with any existing UI design standards. It wastes enormous amounts of screen space. It gives emphasis to unimportant items, and relegates important functions to strange-looking, non-standard widgets.

I can't recall exactly what the OSX address book looks like, but you could probably take some cues from it. And to be quite honest, the KAddressBook UI is far, far, superior to this. It's far more usable and functional.

Really, the look and design of your app belongs more in a game UI than a useful app. - Jul 15 2007

It's hard for me to understand the purpose of this app. KTorrent is excellent, mature, and already has these features that are "coming" in qBittorrent: UPnP/NAT-PMP, RSS, styles, files prioritizing in a torrent; Windows portability will likely come in the future with KDE4. Ok, so this works without the KDE libs...but the KDE libs are great!

But, hey, more free software (and Qt, at that) is always good. - May 02 2007

True transparency for Konsole

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by TheNacho 41 comments

To be honest, I actually like the "not real" transparency. The reason is, the Konsole uses my wallpaper as the background for the terminal, which looks nice and clean as a background for all that text. If it used "true" transparency, it would overlay the terminal text on top of windows, icons, etc, which would make it uglier and harder to read. So... :/ - Nov 06 2006

No offense, but I have a hard time believing that someone who writes like this uses any Linux distro.

My advice (if you read this):

1. Dump whatever distro you're using and install Kubuntu.
2. Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Explain your problems clearly and with detail. Don't write as if you're typing with a cellphone. - Mar 13 2006

Amarok 1.x Scripts by kbulgrien 34 comments

I just got a 1 GB SD card so I can put music on it to play on my PPC in the car with an FM transmitter. I want to reencode my MP3s to 96kbps Oggs to save space on the card. For the last several hours I've been trying to make a plugin for this script to do that. I'm 99% there, except for one thing: the scripts can't handle a non-zero exit code without popping up an error box and stopping cold.

Not all of my music files are MP3s: some are Oggs already, so I need the transcoding script to handle that. But no matter what I try, the script always stops with "Error 1" when the test to see if the filename's extension is ".mp3" fails. Of course it's going to fail on an Ogg file...but that doesn't mean the script has to quit there! I want it to continue!

I've tried using grep, I've tried using case statements, and no matter what, it always kills the script before it can continue.

*sigh* I've got it working great on one filetype. - Mar 11 2006

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by dbera 42 comments

You're right; I never noticed that before. Well, I've noticed that Beagle can take a long time to return results, and as long as kBB is waiting for Beagle's results, it is frozen; and as long as kBB is frozen, you can't give any input to any other programs or interfaces in X. IMHO this is a serious problem. Here are some ideas to help:

1. A simple timeout for searches; if nothing's returned in so many seconds, cancel it and close the menu, so the user can continue using the X session without having to resort to something like restarting kicker.

2. Instead of using the pop-up menu, do a little trick where you create a special window at the same position that the pop-up menu appears, without window decorations or borders, but one that is a normal window. Make it act like the pop-up menu, in that if you click on something else it disappears. This way it wouldn't block input to the rest of the GUI.

3. Get KDE to fix the problem at a higher (lower?) level, for all pop-up menus. - Mar 10 2006

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by dbera 42 comments

I've noticed that while the kBeagleBar box is open, X does not receive any events from the mouse or keyboard at all. Just moving the cursor over something, like buttons on a title bar, does nothing while kBeagleBar is open. This is especially bad if kBeagleBar freezes up for a while, as it makes your GUI unusable. That happened to me earlier; I had to switch to tty2 and `killall -9 kicker` to get my GUI to respond again.

Please continue your work on this. So far it's the only Spotlight-like thing for KDE, and it's really handy. - Mar 09 2006

Minimal mouse movement is a great idea, but the problem with your solution is that you can't see all the apps in a menu section at one time. So if you aren't sure which section an app is in, you have to scroll your wheel through the entire section before looking in the next one. It's hard enough when they're all on-screen at once, but I think having to scroll through a few at a time before you can see them all is worse. I guess it depends on how many apps are in a section.

Something I did to reduce mouse movement is to move my kicker panels to the top of the screen. Now most mouse movement happens at one edge of the screen: menus, launchers, pagers, task lists, notification areas, app title bars, app menus, app tabs, etc. They're all near one edge of the screen, instead of some being at the bottom and others at the top. I actually did this with Windows 2000 before I switched to Linux. Anyway, try it for a few days, you might like it. :) - Dec 28 2005
