Nice work - but not original enough. Tone down the color a bit. Perhaps slightly make the icons grayscale. The overall color assault is a bit blinding.

I agree. Could you try to make a progress bar (pseudo, at least) there instead of the icons? It seems to go hand-in-hand a bit with the users of Linux. At least as far as the Buddhist idea of "enlightenment" and the Linux users, being Linux users, hence "enlightened". - Nov 12 2004

I've read the GPL. I can recite it for you if you like. :)

My point is people confuse the fact that when you GPL something, that doesn't give you the right to restrict derivative works. - Oct 01 2004

>Did people train her to use Windows XP,
>or Windows? You see, what people like you
>do not understand, is that it doesn't
>give a damn what it looks like.

Avoid using phrases like "what people like you". You'll put people on the defensive.

> What's important is how it works. You
> can make KDE look like XP, but it will
> not work like XP.

Working like XP would be counter-productive. ;)

> The dumb girl you just talked
>about will not be able to work with KDE
>just because it looks like XP. That >will probably just add more to the >confusion.

Changing the appearance of something unfamiliar to the familiar would probably lead to more confusion? Anyone here can think of numerous examples supporting the opposite. If I had a car with a fuel cell engine that accomplishes what my previous cars had done (i.e. transport me places), would I want it to look different or resemble what I was used to? Would I already want to be familiar with what it looked like?

An experiment could always be done. Sit down a novice user in front of a stock enlightenment desktop and ask them to get their normal computing needs done. Now try the same with something that looks familiar to them... - Sep 29 2004

Unfair yes - just tread lightly. I've seen numerous comments from people complaining about use of GPLd and LGPLd work. As far as everyone's favorite licenses are concerned, asking permission is just courteous and not required. - Sep 23 2004

I noticed that too as I also use kontact. The worst part of it is? For some reason when I tried overwriting kontact with new icons, it didn't take. I just checked something else though, and it seems I might be able to fix it... I'll be updating the sets soon, hopefully this change will merge back into the default template for each set. I like your designs there, but I like the ability to easily create kwin themes better. Keep it up.
On FC2 x86, all four themes crashed like the above mentioned. Interesting though on an x86_64 running SuSE 9.1, everything works fine. FC2 was KDE 3.2.3 and SuSE 9.1 is KDE 3.3.

There are numerous reasons for them, just as long as theres ways to disable them via kernel parameters or /etc/sysconfig like SuSE's. One reason from the top of my head, do we really want new users to Linux staring at a bunch of services being loaded (sometimes failing) or a graphical progress bar?
Hide the details of implementation and just get the user where he wants to go. Just give the regulars the option to disable it. Oh, and:
