I'm redesigning the folder icons (The current ones are outdated and don't blend in well with darker themes)

Since it's a rather large change, and folders are the most visible icons, I thought I'd get some user opinions first.

This is my first rough draft of a new type of folder:

What does it lack? more detail? gloss? is it fine as it is? - Aug 02 2008

I'm glad you like it. While I understand the microsoft hate, I made the icon from the ground up and I didn't even think it looked anything like windows. I guess when you stand far away the shape does resemble windows' flag, but then again, so would any set of colored cubes stacked together. - Aug 02 2008

Those are very nice icons, but there's no 16x16/22x22 versions. They're great icons, however, so I might be tempted rebuild them for those small sizes and package them, but it would take quite some time. - Aug 02 2008

You or anyone can send or recommend any icons and I will include them, as long as they:

1. Use tango or gnome style.
2. Are available as 48x48 .SVG's, and optimized 16/22/32 .PNG's.
3. If the icons need recoloring to fit with other color-schemes, then .SVG's of smaller sizes must be available.

Creating new icons not that difficult either, you just have to keep in mind that borders must always be exactly 1px thick in every supported resolution, and inkscape's grid is your friend.

As for a gradient gommoso dark, I didn't add it because I think gradients don't suit dark themes. If you still wish to have it, then just change the emerald engine to "legacy" in any of my dark themes, and you will have something quite similar. - Jul 31 2008

I actually did just that before making the new logo, however, the GNOME foot just doesn't fit in with dark themes however I colored it. Maybe in the future I'll just create a dark version of the icons and I won't have to worry too much about how Icons look across visual styles. - Jul 31 2008

screenlets, ubuntutweak and virtualbox are already provided. (you might need to open the menu editor and re-select ubuntu-tweak's icon for it to refresh. Weird GNOME bug, it also needs to be done for scim icon and for selinux)

Brasero and many others don't need to be provided, since they already install the appropriate icons in all sizes to your hicolor folder.

I could add some for a few of those others you mentioned, maybe PCMan, and some generic audio/video clients. In fact, I'm already doing so.

As for the rest, such as google earth/video games/skype, envy, and other not-so-popular apps you mentioned there is no tango icon set for them. I have already searched hours upon hours for those same apps, only to come out empty-handed.

Since I can't possibly create or search icons for every possible GNOME app that doesn't conform to tango, I encourage you guys to send me your own works or link to someone else's open source icons so I can add them to the themes. - Jul 31 2008

The windows logo uses different colors in different arrangements.

The pros for including these new icons, far outweigh the cons, since they:
- Give GNOME-Colors a unique identity.
- Not everyone uses Ubuntu, so this is an improvement over the default GNOME foot (which appears in other distros).
- It looks blends in much, much better than the GNOME foot in dark themes.

That aside, If you'd rather use Ubuntu's default, simply do a search in your .icons/gnome-*color* folder for the following terms, and delete them:
start-here
novell-button
gnome-main-menu

There is no need to go back to a previous version. As I've stated before, If you dislike any icon you can always remove it using the search tool. - Jul 31 2008

As far as I know, 26x26 is not a size used by GNOME or any GNOME application.

It would be best to use panels at either 24, or 32px. Even so, icons shouldn't resize unless the panel is large enough to fit them, so this must be a bug in the trash applet. This also happens with other icon themes as well, so the solution should be to file a bug with GNOME.

However, If you still would like to create 26x26 icons, you can do the following:
1. create a folder called 26x26
2. inside it, create the folders 'places' and status'
3. copy the corresponding trash icons from 24x24 into the new 26x26
4. open the two original trash icons in gimp (not their links), resize their canvas to 26x26, and center them.
5. edit the index.theme and make the entries for places and status in 26x26. - Jul 30 2008

Usually it works just fine by drag n' dropping in appearance preferences with '2.X.X' updates, but every once in a while (particularly on '2.X') it might be best to delete the previous version and upgrading, or using my ColorizeMe scripts to ensure everything works properly. - Jul 29 2008

I can't seem to reproduce this. For me, the appropriate mute icon shows up (even if It's not included, since the theme inherits it from the original GNOME).

The only way for it not to show up, is if you have modified the 'index.theme' file to inherit from human instead of gnome. Either that, or you don't have gnome-icon theme installed, and in both cases my icons will not work correctly, since they are designed to inherit the original unmodified icons from gnome-icon-theme. - Jul 29 2008

You can just click on the theme "Clearlooks-*color*" in appearance preferences, in order to use the theme's default window borders as well, instead of Ubuntu's. If you want something like in the previews, you have to either use the included emerald themes if you use emerald (recommended) or click on 'Customize' and select X-Colors/X-Colors Lite under the 'Window Border' tab. - Jul 29 2008

Hi, I don't understand what you mean. The panels are not meant to turn red or silver, they just use a gradient white background instead of a flat white background as regular clearlooks does. You can however, as I mentioned in the theme description above, disable panel theming. I've put thorough instructions inside the gtkrc and panelrc files, and it should be as easy as adding a "#" in the right place and saving. - Jul 26 2008

It shows a wired cable if it's a wired connection, and waves if it's wireless. I find this way a bit more intuitive. Also, if there is no connection, it will show a red square with an 'X' inside, so you will know if there is something wrong. - Jul 25 2008

You can delete any icon you dislike. For example, if you don't like rhythmbox icons, click on Places > Search for files, select as folder .icons/gnome-brave (or other color) and search for the term rhythmbox. Delete all the files that come out, and it should no longer have the icons you dislike. - Jul 22 2008

I might try a gray variant later on, although it wouldn't be a complete theme, think gray folders/devices and all the other icons blue. I don't think I could make something more than that, since developing 4 icon sets is already very time-consuming, and I'm only halfway through working on 1.5.

As for the GTK themes, you can easily change it to gray in GNOME's appearance preferences. You can use one of the 'aluminium' colors in the included color palette, and choose one as 'selected background' - Jul 09 2008

-Logout, wireless, trash, money emblem, palm devices, handshake, system monitor, claws-mail, add ipod icons, screenlets and disk analizer.

Thanks for the input, do you mean military as in the green's hue, or the variety of color in the wise theme?

If you meant variety, I'll try recoloring a few icons in next release so it feels more natural. As for the color hue, that shade of green is the best i could find that would not cause eyestrain when used in my GTK themes, and I designed these icons to match them, so the shade of green would have to be the same. - Jun 28 2008

Hi, yes I'm aware of this issue. The problem is, that as of now, I'm not done resizing icons to smaller resolutions. For now, I'm using scalable files mostly. These type of images are not pre-rendered, and will be a bit slower than normal. The slowness will go away after a few minutes of usage, though, since the icons will create a cache on disk.

I've been working hard on resizing icons these past few days, so hopefully this will be solved in the next release, or the one after that. - Jun 13 2008

I'll look into the config icon.. this weekend I'll be downloading a bunch of livecds and taking notes on all the menu items/tray icons in the three major distros so I can include icons for most of them. This way, at least default setups should be fully covered.

As for the resizing, I am coming to the cruel realization that it can't be done with the time and skill that I have. It requires manually optimizing the entire icon set (about a thousand icons per set). It would be easier and much, much faster if I had the .svg's (not png's) of GNOME/tango icons rendered at 16x16 and 24x24, but I don't and I've no idea where I could get them.

For now, the current goal is to at least try to resize the icons that scale down badly like tray icons, menu items, the help icon, volume icons, etc. - Jun 05 2008

Thanks for the encouragement!.. by the way, the thing about icon sizes, is that as of now I'm only including scalable files. This means that icons 24x24 and smaller will look blurry or lack definition, because they are being scaled from a larger image. So far, resizing icons to smaller resolutions will be the biggest and most time-consuming challenge, since I'm just getting started with inkscape and I don't have the documentation for optimal batch-resizing. Don't worry, though, once I get the hang of it I'll finish this in no time. - Jun 04 2008
