Plasma Themes by ireko 27 comments

The best plasma panel theme without any doubt. It has personality, it's visually pleasent, it has borders and you can really notice at a glance which is the active window, although it's not flashy at all! Really, great great work!
The only minus sides I see:
- missing parts (for example the device plasmoid isn't skinned
- the clock it's too glassy and it doesn't fit the theme really well. - Nov 21 2008

Obviously you don't have a clue about what you're talking about since AIGLX != XGL and AIGLX is integrated into xorg 7.1. Moreover with the latest (still beta) nvidia binary driver, you can bypass completely xorg/aiglx and have compiz running on top of the drivers without any other layer. - Sep 29 2006

yaBi - beagle search client

Various KDE Stuff by dbera 31 comments

To be honest, while I do appreciate your efforts and I think that a beagle KDE front-end is a *great* idea (kudos to you), I think that yabi currently has some huge usability flaws, apart from aestethics. For example, why would you show the different type of result in differents tabs? It's meant to be a searching tool, the results must be right in your face. Now you search and thinks: well, where is my result? Moreover there are too many tech details exposed. Who cares about email charset encoding??
I think you should submit your app to openusability.org for a full usability review, and commit the suggestions you will surely receive.

Please take it as positive criticism. :) - Jan 25 2006
Yakuake

System Tools (NOT OS or ROMS) by Sho 1027 comments

Yakuake (with another name, perhaps :P) should be shipped by default and enabled at login time on any KDE4 installation. It would provide a default, easy and cool looking way to acces a terminal, cool for power users and useful for debugging purpose while taliking (phone, irc) to newbies. You only have to say "press F12 and type dmesg", for example. - Jan 07 2006

Ok, but you have forgotten the second part of my question: if it's a splitten path, why there's a blue folder icon named "Invoices" upon everything, that let me think taht we currently are in the "Invoice" folder while the "Desktop" one is being selected in the path? - Dec 14 2005

There are a few things I don't understand:

- what is that "Desktop/Document/Work" thing? A splitten path? tabs? "Desktop" entry seems to be selected but the current folder seems to be "Invoice".
- what is that orange round button?
- why 3 X close buttons?
- where are infos about the document selected? (date, author, dimension etc.) - Dec 14 2005

New Interface for KCall

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by arendjr2 19 comments

*This* is the way to create and develop an easy-to-use interface, and your mock-ups are simply great...moreover you're not just throwing some screenshots saying "IMO it would be better this way" but your are providing a complete document with all the rationals behind and working actively with the developers of the program. This is simply awesome and the way to go for everyone that cares about usability in KDE.
If you are going to do a new work after KCall, may I suggest you the KDE printing system? It has got all the power but definitely needs a hard work on UI as you are able to provide.

Again, great work! - Oct 26 2005

Well, IMO some voodoo-options should go only in the configuration file, it's clear text, if you want to change for example the codecs path, edit it manually. Chances are that with you distro packager doing a good job there won't ever be a need to change the default provided. And this could be applied to lots of other option. Anyway, it's your app, if you're ok with this it's not a problem at all :) - Aug 29 2005

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by zammi 29 comments

I'm not against "get inspiration" tout-court, and there are concepts I like in Windows (the revamped start menu, the context bar and others). What I do not like at all are the integral rip-offs, such as in the two latter screenshots...even the color are the same! So my motto is: get all the good ideas out there, add new ones and cook them all with our personal taste. - Aug 29 2005

Mxcl, since you're also a core amaroK dev, please take inspiration from the revamped amarok 1.3 xine config page.
Yeah, I know that a video app needs much more option than an audio one, but showing every xine setting is far too distant from the KISS philosophy you have in mind with Codeine.
I mean, you don't even have a stop button on the standard toolbar and you got 6 pages full of widgets in the config window? - Aug 29 2005

Various KDE 1.-4. Improvements by zammi 29 comments

I like the first screenshot! well, the 2000 tabs are not so good (specially the vertical ones), but the idea of little icon action around the selected icon is really really good! (I just post a similiar idea in another comment here on kde-look).
The second and the third are the usual Vista's ripoffs and I don't think they have place in KDE4, which goal is to be innovative.

(if people started to show this kind of mockups say...1 year ago, probably I would have said they were good, but since they started to appear as soon as Vista's screenshots were out, they don't deserve too much attention, IMO) - Aug 29 2005

There is no sense to keep this topic here and on bugs.kde.org at the same time, moreover if you're using a site meant to publish REAL APPLICATIONS. Suggestions/idea/improvements go on bugs.kde.org as wishes, as you already did. So, keep the question there. If there are KDE users thinking about this topic, they will try to open a wish on bugs.kde.org, see the one you reported and join it.

I'll repeat myself: think if every wish on bugs.kde.org has a repetead entry on kde-apps.org. It would be a mess. - Jul 05 2005

Well but this hasn't nothing to do with an HAL support via DBUS. You can be notified directly by HAL with zero manual configuration of the type of media plugged in (USB disk, audio cd, data cd, video cd, dvd, data dvd etc).
It may transform your project in something a bit more complicated but it would make it really much more useful. Maybe for infos you should ask Kevin Ottens, which is the media:/ KIOslave mantainer. - Jun 22 2005

I actually think that a sudo enabled system is the best way to work. Secure and still comfortable. You don't have to remember two passwords (comfort) and you can't do admin task directly with your own user, nor a possible malicious program can (secure). Yeah, a malicious program can still prompt you for password and if you are "dumb" like most Joe Average are, you will enter the passwd anyway, but this is another story. - Mar 31 2005

Metabar 0.4 is absolutely fantastic!! Great work!!
I have only 1 bug report and 1 feature request

1) if metabar is the default sidebar, it doesn't recognize and show the first directory opened in konqueror. For example, clicking on the "home" button it shows an empty sidebar, you have to choose a directory and the deselect it to get the "home" folder showed in metabar. It's a pity cause it makes it seem as not working at a first sight

2) please add special support and care for the new media:/ slave devices (and old - Feb 25 2005

Kaffeine Player

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

Ok, I've tryed 0.5 and it's really lot better than rc2 due to bug squeezing..BUT the defaults are still insane IMO

1) the toolbars
2) that "shortcut page" again in a tab, it's something that I really don't understand. If you remove it, remove some toolbars and redesign others and don't fix your mind on the playlist :P it becomes quite usable and handy (I really do love the central mouse button behaviour when fullscreen! and thanks that the fullscreen shortcut key bug has been fixed! Now I can use again my usual F key) - Dec 27 2004

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

Can you quote me where I call it "shit"?

So..don't you really think that the playlist (what you are going to play) and the visualization (what you ARE playing) are not related?? Are you so sure?

And about toolbars: wrong default are exactly what I mean for "usability nightmares". Possibility to personilize easily is good (that's why I love KDE and not Gnome), but the defaults have to be sane for the vast majority of people, this majority that would never touch any setup cause they simply wants to play videos, not to play with the video program. The others (like me, and you, I suppose) could easily add toolbars and change the behaviour at their taste. - Dec 25 2004
Kaffeine Player

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

Don-t get offended but you have a really personal idea of what UI elements are meant for.
Tabs are meant for separate pages (i.e. different web pages that are obviously not related) or not too deep configuration (if the config page has lots of options, tabs become a pure hell).

But ABSOLUTELY they are not meant for related pages in a program like Kaffeine! And as you can see in the comment, I'm not alone thinking this...anyway if you don't trust me, try to ask opinion on kde-usability ML.

Moreover, also toolbars are used very badly. There are tons of toolbar by default, placed in a quite strange way and with button that are everythig but explicative.

In the end...I don't know if you are a developer or simply someone who love Kaffeine 0.5. In the first case, don't take this critics as personale offenses, we (me, at least) are only trying to give our help, opinions and ideas to improve Kaffeine, that tecnically is already a very good player. But, as I said, in 0.5 version it's UI has got serious usability prolems. - Dec 24 2004
Kaffeine Player

Video Apps by juergenk 179 comments

Apart from nasty bugs that probably were corrected from rc2 (like the horrid "always place on top of playlist" for movies opened with Konqui), I think that if there weren't changes to the UI from the rc2, Kaffeine 0.5 serie is going to be a true usability nightmare :( And I'm very sad with this, cause I always found Kaffeine to be the best and most integrated player for KDE.

But, for god sake, why did you choose this tab approach? If you want to use a multi page approach, why don't choose a lateral toolbar a la Konqi config page, or a sidebar a la Konqi/amaroK?
Really, I don't want to offend your work nor you, but tabs suck for such a kind of program - Dec 23 2004
