Run it from konsole, and send the output to me by email. If you're not using an image as a desktop background, then you'll get a black square for a background in liquid weather - it's a superkaramba issue.

To make the webcam pic full size, middle click on the webcam button. Sorry, need to update the FAQ.

The Webcam pics update at the same interval as the weather information. The webcam thingy was not really designed to be downloading a new pic every 30 seconds. If you want to do that, I'd suggest using gkrellm.

The local radar map only worked for US cities, and was obtained by scraping the weather.com site. They didn't like that, hence the move to their xml subscription thingy. This means that those radar maps have gone. Sorry. If you can find another source, I'd be happy to look at it.

Click the top download link, not the three below it - they contain just part of the theme (ie some of the .py files in the theme).

Once you've downloaded the theme to a directory, open a console. Then change to the directory you downloaded the theme to using the cd command; eg:

cd /home/user/path/to/theme

replace the '/home/user/path/to/theme' bit with the actual path to the directory where you put the theme file.

Then untar the file using:

tar -jxpf lwp-1.14.tar.bz2

Then cd into the new directory that has been created using:

cd liquid_weather_plus

Then type:

superkaramba liquid_weather.theme

It should run.

This is pretty impressive for a 0.1 release. A couple of points:

- The whole bar flashes from time to time.

- When zooming to 128 sized icons, they become blocky, even though I've got 128 sized icons in my icon theme.

Just some thoughts, but look forward to seeing this once it's got a few point releases under its belt.

Why do you need this? There's no compiling needed. You just delete your existing directory, and untar the tar-ball, and it just works. Why do you need anything more than the tarball?

Superkaramba only writes the .rc file when it is closed, or you do a reload. If you just close the kde session without closing the theme, it won't write to the .rc file. If you crash out, it won't write to the .rc file. To make sure, open up the theme, change the settings you want (using the configure menu), and then close the theme. See if that works.

In terms of the city name, there is an option in the configure menu "use alternative city name". I think that is what you are looking for. - Apr 06 2004

Sounded like you wanted me to fix it in the "next release". The joy of internet miscommunication. Sorry for jumping down your throat. It's just when you've posted how to fix that bug 30 times, and someone sounds like they're asking you to fix something that you have no control over, you get a bit defensive.

And a bit less of the kiddie thanks, although, at my age I should probably take it as a compliment.

My first suggestion is that you read the FAQ/readme.

Then you should right click on the theme, go to the configure menu, and click on "disable threading".

Then close out, and restart.

I suspect you have two themes running one on top of the other. Probably one is running from a previous session, and one is running from Autostart. Check by closing the theme, and see if there's another one underneath.

Then either disable kde's session thingy, or take it out of autostart.

Thanks for your compliments. To be honest, I've never coded in my life before doing liquid weather (well, I did write some programmes on a zx spectrum when I was 10). It's amazing what you can come up with, with a bit of inspiration, some help from some real coders, and a determination to meet a challenge that you set for yourself - basically what open source is all about. You don't need to be that talented to contribute to the open source phenomenon.

In terms of fixing your problems, you are exactly right. Fixing the file, is just a matter of opening it in a text editor (my favourite is kate - but you can use one of the many that come with mdk 10), commenting the relevant line (or deleting it), and recompiling the package.

Good luck.

The interval is regulated by a little jiggery pokery within the liquid_weather.py script. It should update every hour and a half - or so. Sometimes it varies. There is interplay between the theme timing and the .py script timing. Superkaramba updates the theme at the interval specified in the .theme file, which is 150 minutes. However, if the .py script hasn't run for 180 minutes since the last update, it will refuse to update until the next time that the theme updates - which, now that I've written it down and thought about it is just madness. So I'll fix it - sorry, never really thought about this. It just updated every two or so hours for me, which was just fine. Might add an option to update every 1, 2 or 3 hours...

Run it from a console, and post the output. My guess is that you're running Suse9.0, and that your python installation is screwy, so that the theme can't import the os module; but that is just a wild guess....

CAXX0504.

However, you will get the exact same weather forecast. Often, if the weather is in fact recorded from nearby, this city will show up. Although why this would happen for Toronto, I have no idea. I would have thought it was big enough to have its own forecast. There is an option in the configuration menu (somewhere near the bottom) to use an alternative city display. Try turning on that option.

Configuration is saved if you close a theme, quit superkaramba, or reload a theme. If you crash out, exit abnormally, or close a kde session without closing it, the configuration won't be saved.

To start it on boot, you could turn on the session awareness thingy in superkaramba, and make sure it's turned on in kde. Otherwise, put something in ~/.kde/Autostart.

The theme gets weather data from an xml service on weather.com. Don't know if there is an equivalent on de.weather.com. The only way I could think of translating would be to have every single phrase translated, and then put into a dictionary structure. It would be a bit of work, but if you want to do it, send me the pairs, and I'll look at implementing it.

After it opens, and before it moves, right click, go to the configure menu, and click "Disable threading". This means that when it updates, it will freeze momentarily (while it downloads data), but won't freeze permanently (please also note that when it is first clicked on or moved after startup, it will automatically update, so it will freeze momentarily when you first move it - just wait for it to finish downloading data). There appears to be a problem with threading with superkaramba (or at least my implementation of it - it works for some and not others).

To start them on login, put a link to it in ~/.kde/Autostart.

This guy is making something that no-one (to my knowledge) has successfully implemented in linux, and you guys are bitching about changelogs? this is a fantastic piece of work, is a dream to use, and looks good too. As someone who has posted a number of things to kde-look, I can sympathise with Stefano. Maintaining information in a number of places is time consuming. He's provided a changelog, and a link to it. In my view, that is plenty. If you don't use the app because of this, the only loser is you.

Interesting problem.

Normally, the threading problem manifests itself by freezing all themes if they're running off one SK instance.

However, to fix the threading problem, use the configure menu, and click on the "Disable threading" option.

This will cause all themes to freeze (temporarily) while LW is downloading data. However, I've had my box up for days, and LW just keeps running.
