As a native spanish speaker that can also speak French and Catalan, I must say that the rocket icon is NOT LINGUISTICALLY TRANSPORTABLE. In English, "run" means both "go fast" and "execute", but this is indeed not the case in other languages. So a picture of a person running wouldn't do either.

Polysemy rarely translates straight, except sometimes between very similar languages: a piggibank image might clearly mean "save file" to an English speaking person, while Spanish French and Catalan speakers (at least) would remain CLUELESS, because the verb used for saving money (e.g. in spanish, ahorrar) is totally different from the verb used to save a file ("salvar" or "guardar" or "grabar"). - Jan 31 2002

I'm the proud owner of an XT, 10 mhz TURBO, with 640 k memory. I had a matrix printer with it and a "data display (mono-chrome)", as the manual calls it.
Actually, a friend stills e-mails with it. Another manual: "The basic components of the PC/XT Personal Computer consists of the System Unit, the keyboard and the
optional MONOCHROME DISPLAY." Same manual: "the IBM PC monochrome display".
Check your history first :-) The display is dark and paints with light, one color. That might explain the name.

Hi,

I have been using iKons for quite some time now,
but i never really liked the arrow-action-ikons,
which now vome as a default. in version 0.5 rc1
there was the possibility to change the style of
these icons as described in the README. for version
0.5.8, README did not change, but the scripot doesnt
work no more :(
why did you remove the other arrow layouts?
is there a chance they will be back sometime soon?

please, i really want to have them back in an official release.

thanks in advance

Firstl you must use a terminal with transparency support. It's not real transparency, but it works like it is.

example:
aterm -fg DodgerBlue -tr -name monitor -e tail -f /var/log/messages &

details:
-fg DodgerBlue: write in blue (foreground)
-name monitor: a name for some window managers to recognize the terminal so that if set properly it doesn't draw the borders of the window
-e: execute the command
tail -f /var/log/messages: to see the messages file. Note: it can be view only by root on some distros. "man chmod" for more explanations.

Second you must tell your window manager that you don't want borders nor title around this terminal.

Hope this help. - Jan 30 2002

I'm not overly impressed with that wallpaper, but who cares wether it was made with Photoshop on Mac, Gimp on Windows, Kontour on Linux or whatever. The craftsman chooses his tool.

If you want to show me whats possible with the Gimp point out some visible results to me (which doubtlessly exist) instead of blaming people choosing one Tool over the other.

Oh btw, do you think the Gimp is more complicated to use than Photoshop, or why do you say lazieness is a reason for not using Gimp? - Jan 30 2002

yes, mac os X is based on bsd, but there is no os X native version of photoshop for the mac (one of the main reasons a lot of people havent switched over yet) so most people still run photoshop in os 9 or less, which is a completely proprietary os, and doesnt run kde (in fact, os x doesnt run kde natively either, you have to install the darwin version of x windows to run kde)

and yes, os x can run os 9 apps, but it has to practically run all of os 9 on top of os x for the apps to work properly (because of all the weird extension stuff that mac os uses) which makes it too slow to run anything except a simple text editor. - Jan 30 2002

I love the reflective 3D-ish look of the entire set. I don't find all that shininess the slightest bit distracting. Some suggestions:

The navigation arrows are a little too pale; when used against a bright window background colour, they almost look gray.

If your folder icons looked as good as your drawer icons, I'd switch to them without hesitation. As it is, though, your folders are nowhere near as stylish as your drawers (which conflicts with the folder metaphor). - Jan 30 2002

I really like this icon theme bat i need to give a suggestion.
I think that this icons theme need a default pallette (like future gnome icons), this give to the icons a coerency in the colors (this dont happen with current version, see the KDestop icon & the refresh icons, the blue is different, the green between Kcontrol & Refresh is different etc.etc.).

Well, that might be the case, but I didn't like this icon from the start. Don't get me wrong, it's a great icon in its own right and should be kept to give KDE a face. But I never got used to it as the icon for the KDE menu. I would definitely prefer something that is not quite as flashy but a bit more professional. That's all IMHO, of course. - Jan 30 2002

"The icons can be used by

In no way does it 'explicitly say' that it is intended for *LCD/MONOCHROME* monitors, dick. Even if that's the authors intention, I believe the icons could be clearer and less "busy". Look at the whole icon set. - Jan 30 2002

You don't need to release 15 million different versions of your background, all with different colours.

Take a look at the 'Advanced' section of the 'Background' configuration panel - you can have a nice greyscale picture, and use 'hue shift' to colour it whatever you like. - Jan 30 2002
