Amarok Improvment/Mockup

Desktop Concepts by k3ks 5 comments

I used to use foobar in windows, and that allowed something similar. What I'd mainly like to be able to do is browse my collection in the playlist view while Amarok is playing a different playlist.

Having a contect menu option "Send to playlist..." would be nice. Or just drag and drop onto the tabs. - Feb 17 2007

There's some problem with this style not applying to 32 bit gtk apps on a my 64 bit Gentoo system using the qt gtk engine. (gtk-engines-qt-0.7)

Plastik and other themes seem to work fine, and the only error I see when starting these apps is:

KThemeStyle cache seems corrupt!

Excellent, I see what you've done; my problem lays with my colour scheme.

I've had similar problems with ebuilds not liking minor changes in version- there's probably a more graceful way round it that I don't know.

Another suggestion I have is to remove the border when a window is maximised, so the content comes up to the edge.

I've also notied a strange but that's hard to explain. In Konqueror, sometimes when I move the cursor over the toolbars, the icons toggle to the pressed position. It only seems to happen in Konqueror, and usually when I've just moved the cursor over a scrollbar or a displayed icon. I can make some screenshots and possibly a video if this doesn't make sense. - Mar 20 2006

The decoration ebuild just needs renaming to match the version number, but the style one needs a minor hack due to the .1 not being appended to the workdir, so I've hosted it again http://ianegg.homeip.net/~ian/serenity-style-0.3.1.ebuild

I think the colums headers looked slightly better before as they matched the colour scheme whereas they appear grey now and stand out more - is the colour changeable or is it determined by the style? - Mar 19 2006

Sorry about the tripple post!

After using the style for a while, I find that the headers for column titles look too much like buttons, and this doesn't work very well when you have a lot of them in a row. Maybe a flatter or more subtle effect would be better.

Also, is it possible to have the frame in konqueror not drawn at all, so the content comes right up to the edge. Or is that unaviodable? The reason I ask is because I like to have crystal as my windeco, with 0 border width, using shadows for definition instead - like osx. This works well with firefox, but even with your improvemnt in this area, konqueror still has a border. - Mar 11 2006

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by dralgebra 541 comments

I've seen terminals with composite backgrounds and opaque text, so it is possible at least. I think they had to draw the text twice, or have 2 drawing stages for it to work though.

Another use for my suggestion for pseudo-transparency is that users could have custom effects through the borders - like plastic wrap or mosiac in addition to the existing brighten, intensify etc.

If you do split off a composite version, I'd be happy to beta test (as well as, I think, everyone else! :)) - Jan 14 2006

I had similar problems, so I only use composite for the shadows (instead of window borders, ala OSX), for fading in and out and to make everything a bit smoother. Stability is gradually improving.

I think a nice feature to add would be to use a different background other than the desktop.

I don't use crystal's transparency, as KDE allows me to make the windeco transparent with composite, but if I could use a frosty noise pattern as the background for crystal, the combination of composite and crystal's blending would be a very nice effect.

Obviously, I could just set the desktop to the pattern, but it wouldn't make a very nice background :) - Jan 13 2006

Karamba & Superkaramba by Jinidog 74 comments

I think it would be worth it, as users with high DPI could decide if they want to put up with small fonts, or less information. For me, just a small increase in font size makes it a lot easier to read.

Maybe it's not that important right now, but I imagine screen resolutions will increase as time goes on, so it might be useful for the future. - Jan 02 2006

Karamba & Superkaramba by Jinidog 74 comments

Would it be possible to add different font sizes to the configuration? I have a high resolution display, so I usually have to change the font size after every update so I can read it. (xorg DPI seems irrelevant.) I add 1 to 3 to the text sizes, meaning there's less variation in the fonts, but if I make certain ones too big it results in clipping. So it might require a bit of work, but something like Normal and Large would be good, maybe Larger or Extra large too for people with even higher DPIs.

I'm willing to try and implement this myself and send you a patch, but it would probably take me a long time, as I don't really get superkaramba scripting. - Jan 02 2006

A feature that would be very useful (for me at least) would be an option to automatically switch between Album and Track mode depending on wether Random Mode is on or off.

I mostly listen to random tracks, but I often like to listen to a whole album, and changing it every time can be a bit of a pain. - Dec 29 2005

Yakuake

System Tools (NOT OS or ROMS) by Sho 1027 comments

I use the composite extention most of the time, and have the a default transparency set for YaKuake in "Window Specific Settings". If I have "retract when lose focus" enabled, and take focus away, then the trasparency stays the same. However, if I use the access key, it becomes non transparent the next time I activate it.

(The workaround is to use a shortcut to set the window to non transparent, then take focus away, and it goes back to normal.)

I was experimenting with forcing the window type to "Panel" to remove the shadow, so the animation won't look ugly, and noticed that when I use the access key to hide YaKuake, the shadow re-appears.

I was assuming this was a composite bug, but because the shadow reappears like that, I'm thinking that it could be something YuKuake is doing. Do you change the window type or something similar when the access key is used? - Dec 23 2005

This is an amazing script and it just keeps getting better. When I moved to Linux from Windows, Replaygain (and many other Foobar features!) was very difficult to live without, until I discovered this gem.

I'd just like to know if it's possible to dump a list of tracks that haven't had replaygain applied? Foobar could just go through the collection and do it all for me, but manually sorting through my mess of music folders to check each album is a PITA. - Dec 19 2005

Sometimes I forget I can't use shift + the cursors to select text in a console, and I was rebuilding my entire system the other day, and needed to copy a large chunk of text but ended up cancelling the script (emwrap) I had running in another tab and it wouldn't resume, so I had to figure out where it was up to and emerge the remaining 200+ packages manually! :(

I didn't notice these comments at first, and I found an ebuild reguest on Gentoo Bugzilla http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107189

Not knowing much about ebuilds, I posted Peter's there, then added a patch with the ~amd64 keyword and adjusted it to compile with -arts (probably bad/ugly.)

KDE 3.x Window Decorations by dralgebra 541 comments

Just noticed the new version as it was just added to Gentoo's Portage so am compiling as I speak.

Thankyou for removing the small maximised border. That annoyed me quite a bit, and now it's gone, will save me a lot of frustration.

I have to say, even without the excellent transparency and added shortcuts, this would be the best window decoration. I think it's great.

My only wish would be transparency using the composite extention ;) Maybe with KDE 4's support for composite, something like that will be more of a realistic idea. - Aug 06 2005
