hm this rather strange... i never access the index file directly only through "/usr/ports/make search" and pkgtools; i thought that these already follow the rules and settings you specified...
and again on my system, qt33 shows xorg as dependancy not xfree86 ;) ...
i will however find out for sure and try fixing it before the next release. - May 28 2005

no you got in wrong, sorry! code published under the bsdl might be relicensed and distributed in binary-only-form but than its not bsd-licensed code! the bsd license is not copyleft like th gnu gpl but it is an opensource license, approved by the osi. and the osi definition of opensource reads as follows in section 2:
2. Source Code

The program must include source code, and must allow distribution in source code as well as compiled form. Where some form of a product is not distributed with source code, there must be a well-publicized means of obtaining the source code for no more than a reasonable reproduction cost-preferably, downloading via the Internet without charge. The source code must be the preferred form in which a programmer would modify the program. Deliberately obfuscated source code is not allowed. Intermediate forms such as the output of a preprocessor or translator are not allowed. - Apr 29 2005
tweakBSD

System Tools (NOT OS or ROMS) by tweakBSD 25 comments

well first of all: NO WRONG! :D
if he releases code under the bsdl he has to make the source available. the big difference to the gpl is that anyone is permitted to relicense bsd code as proprietry software (providing he has in some way altered it), but if it is released under the bsdl that it is opensource!
anyway, the cvs is not password protected anymore, source is available and i had email contact with the coder so everything is settled. - Apr 29 2005
Katiuska

Video Apps by patcito 15 comments

i like katiuska very much, but it is almost impossible to make it work in freebsd :(
the first problem is, that you offer two binaries with katiuska (which kind of conflicts the concept of kommander, being not binary...); i couldnt find source for encoder_example and i was not able to build ffmpeg2theora on freebsd (trying to point it at the patched and built ffmpeg freebsd-port gave me loads of unresolved symbols during make). after installing the linux campatability layer in freebsd and copying/linking the full /lib und /usr/lib from my old ubuntu system to /compat/linux in freebsd ffmepg2theora and encoder_example finally work :) and converting files in katiuska works!!!
but dvd reading doesnt work yet...
what devices does katiuska look for? i created a symlink from /dev/cd0 to /dev/dvd and have aproriate entries in my fstab...
thanks for your help and for making katiuska! - Mar 27 2005

Convert WMA to MP3-OGG

Dolphin Service Menus by zast 34 comments

your service menus are cool but it is kinda unhandy converting all thos files manually...
something really cool would be an app that automates large-scale conversions. for example a program that scans a directory and converts all mp3,wma and mpc to ogg vorbis, transferring tags and autodetecting bitrates, so quality is not lost during conversion, but space isnt wasted either....
maybe something like this could even be done with kommander...
anyway good work ! gotta get rid of those wmas :D - Feb 10 2005

Karamba & Superkaramba by victor73 100 comments

first of all, excuse me, i think the tone, got a little harsh in the last posts.
about resonsibility of nations, i do not think in terms of nations. to me the concept of drawing a line on a map, and defining people on one side to be like this and to differ from others in one or another way, is absolutely non-sense. please explain to me, in what manner i am responsible for nazi germany, do you see yourself as responsible (nationally responsible!?) for slave-trade, do you feel like you should say sorry to someone?
concerning the terror alert signs, you are right they themselves are not pro war, but they are one of many instruments used by the current us administration to instigate fear(and your dstribution of this tool, supports it - if you chose to do this conscious of this fact, it does make your partly responsible), which then is used as a major instrument in gaining support for wars.
and seriously does it make ANY differnece whatsoever to bill hick in preston county, west virginia whether your tool says yellow or red?
does it make a difference to you? - Jan 24 2005
kTerrorAlert

Karamba & Superkaramba by victor73 100 comments

another very nationalistic mind-set you have there. i suppose you can explain, how I am responsible for germany's wars or why i should not voice my opinion on american foreign policies.
let me word your statement differently, i have difficulty understaning it (and please correct me if you intended it differently): a person, born in a certain area, may not speak up against crimes, commited by someone from a different area, if people from his area commited similar crimes in history? SENSE!?

oh and btw. thank you for allowing me an opinion of my own. - Jan 23 2005

hey i really like the concept, but i just thought of MUCH BETTER PICS TO SHOW:
US Government is...
green: ...making up 'facts' to fool its own people
orange: ...preparing a new war
red: ...at war with a country

the good thing: you could even start a new one for every country, and get loads of flashy karamba themes on your desktop, all moving from green to red...
of course after a while you'd have to get more and more virtual desktops to store all those themes, but luckily kde gives you about twenty, which should provide you with enough space, at least for the next century(providing your screen resolution is somewhat decent)!

oh and maybe for the extra-fun: you can make an extra wolrd-freedom-democracy-and-peace-theme, that starts out red and gets greener the more war-themes you have (after all things are getting securer, right?). of course, if you dont get a new war-theme at least once every 6 months, it should definitely get redder again.... - Jan 21 2005

Kommander

Developers Apps by sequitur 57 comments

hm. i've got a problem:
i am using debian g/l and i would like to do some webpage developement, so i wanted to install quanta, but quanta depends on kommander to be precise on the kommander package from the debain unstable tree... well since i have a newer version of kommander installed from source, which apt does not recognize this leaves me the option of either breaking or donwgrading my kommander, which is no option.
of course i could also install quanta from source, but that might then again cause more problems with apt-dependencies and will make it even harder to upgrade later; my question, would it be possible to remove the kommander dependency from quanta or provide some newer deb packages of kommander?
thanks and also thanks for making kommander ;) - Nov 23 2004
JuK

Audio Apps by wheeler 53 comments

well juk is awesome!
i just recently found it on my system and was pleasantly surprised, bmp and xmms goodbye!
i especially like the automatic tagging feature and the renaming feature, just nice for handling loads amounts of files....
but i have a problem, whenever my juk does something (renaming retagging) the rest of kde stands still... when juk starts at the beginning and scans for new files, f.ex. kde freezes for about 15secs! and some retagging takes really long (sometimes it doesnt!?) resulting in a temporarily unusable system...
is there something you can do about this?
i am using debian sid and the juk that comes with kde 3.3.1, oh and if it matters i got about 8k songs in the database.
thanks - Nov 22 2004
Konverter

Video Converters by kraus 67 comments

your program looks really really great!
i cant wait for the new release ;-)
but there is two things i am missing in konverter:
1. support for the ogm container format (instead of avi) and
2. support for ogg-vorbis audio instead of mp3

would be really cool if you could add this.... also does konverter support encoding encrypted dvd-files (other than the planned dvd-ripping feature)? this would be handy in converting the mpegs from svcds.
anyway keep up the good work !

Kmenc15

Video Apps by ods15 36 comments

so far i've only worked with (video-)dvdrip and acidrip, both with ugly gtk frontends.... i actually preferred dvdrip because it uses transcode, while acidrip uses mencoder. acidrip lacks certain features:
- no ogm-container-format, only avi and mpg
- neither ac3 nor ogg sound codecs
- its not possible to rip multiple audio streams (languages) to one file
my question is whether this is connected to mencoder(meaning kmenc15 doesnt and will never support these features either) or is it connected to the frontend - meaning menc15 does/might sometime support these features?

Iraq Body Count Ticker

Karamba & Superkaramba by hillmanj 20 comments

if we are already talking about numbers: independant institutes estimate a total of 200.000 children (!) - yeah right not just some civilians or some office people or whoever, just inncocent children - have died between 1990 and 2002 as a result of the un resolution of 1990.
but still numbers are nothing really, who can even understand the extent of 'only' a hundred deaths - thats like all people you know or value just gone in the blink of a second... so dont compare numbers of the size. to decide whether the iraqis were better off before the us decided to 'expand there economical and political interests in the middle east' is not up to any of us; just to the iraqis. and - although i admit we didnt have to much coverage before the war - i cant help but think that they are not happier now. although saddams regime was brutal and repressive , the chance of being blown up while trying get food for your kids were not really high (this is not meant funny ). AND there were no terrorists roaming the land doing how they plaese, kidnapping, killing and robbing people.
just to point out: i DO reject religious extremism, terrorism, dictatorships and the like, but just keep in mind that although we value democracy above most things, it might not be the ultimate truth for everybody everywhere ->some people(s) maybe just aint ready for it!

i think YOU have no clue what you are talking about. i dont know how much history lessons you had in school, but let me assure you of this: when christianity was as young as islam is still now there were many many more people already killed in the name of christ! the same thing you can see with islam now (holy war et cetera), the christians had couple of years back, except it was not some militant minority(which al qaida IS), but was an organized religious war against all heathans. those were no attacks on an enemy or something like that, it was an unctrolled brutal and cruel war against everybody who did not comply with the catholic ideology. i guess you're protestant... you know what? they would have tortured you and have you confess things you never even heard about (kinda like your soldiers was doin down in iraq) and all of it IN THE NAME OF JESUS!

looks great. i think its great to see a new qt-designer! being dependant on commercially developed software always sucks (doesnt matter if its open source or not), and i'd always prefer the community based app. i hope trolltech goes bankrupt some time after qt4.0 and the community takes over ;) . well maybe not, but i seriously think we should get independant of those companies sooner or later, and substituting their software with new community based software is the first step. thank you! ;)
i havent tested kformdesigner yet, but can you tell me whether it makes the uis the kde or the qt way (i dont know whether there is a difference really but there is kde widgets and qt widgets and qt projects and kde projects)? i am working on x-platform qt apps, just wanted to ask if that matters.
